Do i have to use a magnetic dimmer for dimming low voltage track lighting (e.g. to eliminate the buzzing sound)? Can you recommend some preferred wall switch dimmers to use for my low voltage halogen (MR-16) track lights (under 300 watts)?

Yes, Lutron makes dimmer controls designed for both magnetic and electronic loads.  To minimize buzzing, flickering and filament noise you need the right one.  If you have a 300 watt maximum load, most likely you have an electronic transformer.  You can tell by inspecting the transformer for size and weight.  Magnetic transformers are larger and weigh considerably more.
