We are lighting the woods behind our pool and woudl like to shine lights up and into the woods. Would low voltage spots be better than flood lights or flood better than spots? Thank you

Use flood lights would be a better way to go.  Here are three fixtures that will work for you:

175 watt box flloodlight - This is what the professionals use to create a dramatic moonlight effect and color contrast.

100 watt box flood - This is what the professionals use to create a soft moonlight effect and color contrast.

500-watt halogen flood - This will work as a low cost solution if used in combination with a dimmer control.
