I have a Firex 120-5388 electrical smoke alarms that were installed about 8 years ago by my contractor. One of the alarms is defective and I needed to replace it. I was told by ACE Hardware that I would have to replace all the smoke alarms that are tied into this system with new ones since I can''t replace an old one with a new one and have all the others work together???? Since my dectectors are 8 years old, and I don''t have the manuals, I''m not certain exactly what models to purchase. Can you help me? Perhaps I could read the back of the dectector to you and you can tell me what model number I need to purchase. Also, Do I have to replace all my dectectors that are on this circuit with new ones?

Smoke detectors like most electronic devices have improved over the years.  I would recommend that you simple replace all of them at the same time for piece of mind.  This is also a great time to include a combination CO2 and smoke detector to add a new level of protection.

When you remove the old detector from the ceiling, you should see a white (neutral) wire, a black (hot) wire and a red (interconnect) wire.  The red wire is what tells the other devices to sound in the event of a smoke or fire event.
