Height of mounting
Considering changing 2 of my exisiting floodlights to RAB STL200H or GOtcha500R. Currently these lights are above the second level about 16'. How effective can they sense at this height? Thank you!
For a 16' mounting height I would go with the STL360 series, this will ensure total coverage.

replacement light sockets
I use a malibu ml18wb2c 12volt 18 watt bayonet base bulb. You seem to have very expensive prices for the equivalent compared to home depot. I need replacement sockets. these are spring sockets. Do you have these sockets. Your website says $15.00 apiece for the Specialty S8- High Intensity: -715093 12W light bulb with average 700 hour lamp life. Retail Price: $26.00 Sale Price: $20.00 Focus Landscape Lighting - Replacement Socket Incandescent S8 (5-pack) Socket for a bayonet base S8 incandescent bulb. Sold in pack of 5. $46.00 seems awfully expensive for a little socket. is it the right socket?

Trouble Shooting RLLD2645 mini lights
I have several sets of RLLD2645 mini LED lights on an outside tree. One set in the middle of two others, which work, is dead and one set has half its lights out. How do you find the problem or bad bulb?
You can purchase a hand held mini light tester which will allow you to test both the wiring and the lamps individually. The other way is to use one of the supplied spare replacement lamps and start by replacing the first bad lamp in the series. Then continue the process with the last lamp removed until you find the bad bulb. Thank you for buying our christmas lights and for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

Replacement Bulbs
I have a childs night light that uses what appeared to be 5 standard clear bulbs simular to the blub shown in part number RLLD4301ROM but the socket looks more like the one shown in RLLD1920AME. . I tried using the bulbs from a cheap 100 bulb set but they burned out instantly. I can send photos of old bulbs if needed. . I have examined the old bulb and socket for any writing but there is none. My daughter loves this night light and I would love to get it going again. Any help is appreciated. . Thanks Jim

These small twinkle lights are designed for specific voltages. Since most light strings are wired in series, the sum of the voltage should equal 120 volts. It would be difficult for me to diagnose your problem from a photograph. Are there any electrical specifications on the label? Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. 40 x 24 star tree topper

What size tree do you recommend this topper for?

Tree Lighting
I have found your site to be quite informative; thank you. I have moved into a new home with 2 large oak trees and 2 small/med oak trees in the large front yard. I have already run line voltage to a junction box at the base of each of these 4 trees. I want to light up the canopy of the trees for aesthetic appearance. From your site, I have gathered that Mercury UP lights are the best option for my situation (2 100w for each large tree and 2 50w for each smaller tree), but I have some questions: 1.) If I use the box floods (link below), do I just run the conduit up the tree to each box, or is there a separate balast unit needed like with Mercury Vapor Uplight Kits (second link). http://www.residential-landscape-lighting-design.com/store/landscape_flood_lights_RLLD1355TEC.htm http://www.residential-landscape-lighting-design.com/store/RLLD293TEC.htm 2.) Other than Stainless Steel screws, what other precautions/parts are needed to mount the units to the tree? 3.) Can I use a dimmer switch with these Mercury Vapor units? 4.) How many units can I place on the same 20amp circuit? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Thank you for your kind words and we would be delighted to assist you with a landscape lighting suggestion. With power at the base of the tree you are halfway done. Our mercury vapor have a built-in ballast inside the housing. For aethestics, I would locate another junction box up in the tree which will allow you conceal the two wires going to the lights. You can use EMT (metallic) conduit or PVC (plastic) conduit up the side of the tree truck to protect the wire. Why don't you send us a few digital images and alighting consultant will contact you with ideas and a quote. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Feel free to contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

Metal Halide
I am currently using Metal Halide lights to light a wharehouse. Recently there has been a lot of discussion whether or not to turn the lights off when that section isn't being used. Is it really saving that much energy by turning them off for an hour or two? Is it best for the bulb to be left to burn for the whole day or is it shortening the life of the bulb by turning it off for an hour or two when the light isn't needed? PLease let me know and if you could cite some resources (for arguing) that would be great. Thanks, Tim
I would suggest that you not turn them off the metal halide during the day. I do agree that you would be saving some energy, but you will shorten the lamp life of the bulb by doubling the amount of start cycles. On the other hand, lamp manufacturers recommend that you not burn the lamp continuously and they should be turned off periodically. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Manufacturers
I am in the process of shopping low voltage landscape lighting fixtures and I have been overwhelmed with the selection available. I am particularly interested in MR16 bullet lights and am having a hard time deciding on which to purchase. I have looked at many including the type (Malibu) sold at a big box store to ebay (Best Pro Lighting Man.) to the well known commercial manufacturers (Hadco, Vista Pro, Kichler) and all the way up to the top of the line including ClaroLux, Unique and CAST. From my research, there is a large discrepancy in price for the aforementioned fixtures. How can I determine which is right for me? From what I have read and the little knowledge I have, it is not clear what the differences are. I am not trying to skimp here. I would like for it to look the best it can but I also don’t want to spend more than it is worth. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Subdivision Entrance Lights
We are interested in getting some sort of spot lighting system for the entrance signs to our subdivision. There is no power out there, is there another way to achieve this goal without having to go thru the electric company?
Solar powered lights are your only option without electricity. Generally, an LED spot light would be the most effective for lighting your sign. Unfortunately, we currently do not carry any solar powered lights posted that would satisfy your requirements. Have you considered providing electrical power from the nearest house and give the resident a break on his dues or association fees? We have many directional sign lights to choose from. mini lights and led lights
why can you not string together mini lights and led lights together on your Christmas tree. I h ave done this on my tree and all is well, but, I heard not to do this, no explanation was given why so I disconnected the lights and now its not near as bright. Thanks for an explanataion,
Some LED operate on DC current and others operate on AC current. The individual Christmas light strands are engineered at the factory with small fuses located inside the male cap. This prevents you from stringing more than three strands by code due to the wire size. If you mix and match various Christmas strands, then you would have to calculate the total load based of the safety tags to not exceed the fuse protection. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

Low Voltage energy consumption
Hi, I have two outdoor 12v lighting systems. One system has a 300 watt transformer, the other 600 watts. Both are loaded to capacity. I am trying to figure out the energy consumption of the 900 watts @ 12v, versus the consumption of similar wattage at 110 volts. Is there a conversion factor or chart you could reccomend? Thanks
The electrical consumption is based on the total transformer load or total wattage. The consumption at both voltages would roughly be the same (1500 watts vs. 1500 watts). Low voltage systems utilize lamps that are generally lower wattage and therefore operate more efficiently than higher voltage lamps systems. If you want to save energy and extend lamp life, install a dimmer on your existing transformer. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

Non Start of Fluorescent
Just installed Metalux model #9001. Lights do not come on when power on. After 3 or 4 on/off tries, lights come on. Next try after wait, same problem. Room temp about 65F. Any fix?
Check the voltage first to see that you are getting the correct imput voltage. Then I would check the wiring going to the sockets. These small wires sometimes get loose or pop out during the installation. If they are loose, refer to the wiring diagram on the fluorescent. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

dimmer switch
We installed a new electric fireplace in my mothers home. She use to have a gas fireplace, but that has been removed and gas supply caped off. There was an exsisting dimmer switch, which must have been used for some reason regarding the gas fireplace. I notice that the old dimmer needed to be changed, so I went and got a new one. After installing the new dimmer, the metal outside plate got really hot. Just to let you know that the dimmer and a regular light switch is wired in one box. Could the wires in the wall that are hooked up to the dimmer be running too much power for the dimmer?. I did notice that when I removed the old dimmer, it looked melted on the black backing. Please help with some suggestions that I can do to find the problem. Thank you Shellie Keers Ontario, Canada.
I would contact the manufacturer of the electric fireplace and ask for their suggestions. Without knowing the specifications of the heat strip inside the fireplace unit, I would hesitate to make a recommendation. Until this issue is resolved, I would not use the fireplace or replace the dimmerwith a standard wall switch. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. 12 volt lighting

I have a 277 volt ballast that is converting to 12 volt for a 50watt mr16 lamp what should the voltage read accross the pins and from pin to ground. Please advise Thank You
On the secondard side of the magnetic transformer (12 Volt side) the voltage should read between 10 to 11.5 volts. If you are getting more than 12 volts, the lamp will fail very quickly. Cable choice

What low voltage cable do I need for in-wall from transformer to the light? Any CL2 of the right guage?

If you are wiring a low voltage light fixture in a residential home, romex wire is required for use in the wall. I would use 12/2 romex for long runs and 14/2 romex wire for short runs. type of bulb
any advice/direction on where to see what different types of lights/wattages/beam spreads actually look like in real life without trying to guess by looking at photometric charts?? I want to uplight the front of my house--some soft lighting to reach up to between my first floor windows, 2 uplights to accent my two story brick facade, and several lights to accent a few decorative trees. thank you-- don
Don, unfortunately there is nothing out there that shows what you are asking for. I'll explain why...The problem is with the image capturing. There is no way to standardize a "real" image of the way light behaves. Yes you can take images of lights, but due to the variations in sensitivity of the camera used, operator choices, and image output, we have no way of acurately representing light behavoir. So, manufacturers of lighting fixtures and bulbs use the only standardized system, the foot candle measurement. To add to the mix, look up "foot candle" on wikipedia.com, you will see that the measurement is based on the amount of light that one candle gives off on a surface that is 1 foot away! Can you believe that? This goes back to our English Standard system of measurement and all of its funny beginnings, such as the weight of 1 lb. Funny stuff really. To get back to your inquiry, I wish there was something more concrete to illustrate light levels, but for now, we can only go by the chart. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

step lights for wood application
Im looking for compact flourescent step lights to be installed in a wood framed wall covered in wood siding -- why do most of the step lights specify non-combustible or masonry applications Which CF step or brick lights can be used in wood
Most outdoor step lights are designed without a thermal protector which turns off the light should it overheat. This is a safety feature to prevent users from installing lamps that exceed the manufacturer's recommendation. With fluorescent step lights, heat is rarely an issue. Take a look at the Focus fluorescent step light. It is a well made fixture with good shielding charateristics. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Threaded glass cover replacements?

Where can I get glass cover replacements? I have several old industrial Malibu-style lights. Under the metal hat cover is a threaded glass upside-down jar which covers the 12V 15W standard base bulb. The glass jar is cracked. Made by PGCo? 3.25 diameter, 5 height, rounded top, screws down to a cork gaskget to protect the threads.

volutage drop in landscape lights
I just installed pathway landscape lights and only the 5 closest to the transformer have the bright lighting it should have, the rest are really dim. What should I do to make them all brite? Thank you for your help
You need to cut the direct burial wire and split your lighting into smaller groups. This will balance the load and help you overcome the voltage drop issues causing the dim lights. It is always best to use a 12 guage wire or larger to prevent this problem. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Most globe lights have a medium base , intermediate base or candalabra base socket. Think of these globe sockets as a large, medium and small diameter lamp holders. I hope this answers your questions regarding which type and what to request when placing another order. Also pay attention to the wattage of the lamp as there is a variety of choices between the various lamps. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Photecells and Timers
If you purchase a light fixture with an imbedded photocell can you override the dusk/dawn feature. For example I want to turn off the lights at midnight but the photocell keeps the light on until 6am when the sun comes up. Can you turn off the fixture either manually or with a timer to override the photocell?
Yes, I would use a mechanical time clock to control the outdoor security lighting fixture. Set the time to come on during daylight hours and the internal photocell will go into action and shut off the light. Set the off tripper at the time you want the lights to manually go off. This technique is used quite often. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

I have a 46 x 36 inch painting prominently displayed in my living room. I would like to draw some attention to the painting without overwhelming it with light. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I would suggest a 36" House of Troy over the picture light with a recessed outlet concealed behind the artwork. That way you can conceal the wire for a more finished look. The picture light comes with a small thumb switch on the cord which can be installed on the frame and hidden from normal view. Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Amer. Lighting 120V pucks
I ordered a twin pack of American Lighting's 120volt direct wire Xenon puck lights along with a slim line junction box (ALSLBOX). However, both pucks came with the tail piece pre-wired (2 wires coming out of the puck-1 for the incoming power & 1 to link the next light with). The directions clearly state ensure the last puck does not have the tail wire. Can I remove the tail wire from the last puck in the line? If so, How? Also, I have pre-wired 14/2 inside the walls for these lights and want to direct wire them both. Is there a way to accomplish this using only 1 ALSLBOX or do I have to use two boxes? If so, again, what do you do with the tail wire on both pucks? HELP!!!!

Greg... I found this on the American Lighting web site:
http://www.americanlighting.com/faqs.cfm?ID=3
FAQ 13: What do I do with the extra set of wires left on the puck light? Answer: The extra set of wires can be cut. If you cut the wires, each must have it's own wire nut attached to terminate the end.
Go ahead and cut them off.

landscape lighting

I live in Syracuse, NY and experience long winters with deep snow. I would like to bring in my low voltage landscape fixtures for the winter to keep them from weather extremes and being buried under the snow. On the other hand I want to leave in the permanent buried electric supply lines. Is there some type of after market quick disconnect that can be be installed that would allow me to plug and unplug the fixtures seasonally and easily? Thanks for your help.

decorative lighting problem
i use up to 20 strings of pre lit blue ridge pine garland in different locations throughout my home during the holidays. on one spot outside, i have 3 strings running together. i tested all 3 before hanging and all 3 lit correctly. after hanging i noticed that the 3rd string was only half lit. the puzzeling part is that the string is not lit from the 2nd string up to the half way point in the 3rd string and then the other half furthest away from the 2nd string is completely on. i have replaced the fuses in the 2nd string where it connects to the 3rd and nothing changes. i have tried to plug 2 different strings into the 2nd string and neither one will light at all. i am at a bit of a loss. i do not want to dissasemble my whole arrangement if possible as there are decorations, bows etc. used throughout the 3 string run. are there any special bulbs of fuses that i am unaware of? please advise. thanks, steve frasncis

Energy Usage
I am looking to put lights in on a pedestrian walkway bridge and also a small parking lot. What would be an approximate energy usage of one pole light
The amount of energy consumed is dependant on the type and style of parking lot lighting fixtures you select. Using an HID light source such as metal halide or fluorescent will be the most cost effective. We have a good selection of metal halide parking lot lighting kits to choose from. If you don't see a commercial lighting fixture that appeals to you, we can certainly assist with other packages.
For the walk bridge, we have a host of surface mounted step lights and bollard fixtures that would work well.

Are you referring to pagoda style landscape lighting fixtures? The type fixture with a series of louvers surrounding a glass enclosure? They are sometimes called "Jelly Jars" in the lighting trade. Photocell switch
In my home theaterrecreation room I have both main overhead lights and lower-level ambience lighting behind the HDTV to be able to turn off the main lights for watching the HDTV without it going completely dark. These are all LED lamps by the way no bearing on my question. What Im after is a photocell switch which I can control the ambience lighting so that it turns off when the main lights are turned on and vice-versa. Im aware of dusk-to-dawn photocell switches and have a few of them on order but my experience with them is that they are not sensitive enough for this application. I would probably need an adjustable version to calibrate it for the specific light levels involved I measure about 160 lux with the main lighting on at the location where the photocell switch would most likely reside. Thank you for any help you can offer with this problem.
The preferred product for this application would be the Lutron Radio Ra system. It is a wireless (no additional wiring needed) radio frequency system with a tabletop master control. It is compatible with home theather components via an infrared (IR) interface. With the touch of a button you can control the various scenes in the room, the ambient lighting being one scence.

Transformer problem
I've just replaced an indoor switch that controls the on/off times of low-volt landscape lights. The switch connects to the lights through a 300w Malibu transformer. When the switch is on, the transformer hums loudly, the lights go on and sometimes turn off, or fade before returning on, and after awhile the lights go off and stay off. Can you suggest a solution? Thank you.
Did you install an electronic wall timer? If so, they are not designed for use with magnetic or inductive loads such as outdoor lighting transformers. You might consider installing a time clock to solve the problem.

indoor arena lighting

indoor arena is 80x160. From the ground up to 5 ft is steel, then there is a 7 ft wide clear curtain. than 2 more ft of steel to the top. what do you recommend for lighting,, we live in the midwest if weather is a factor .
By the description you have given, I assume that the ceiling, or mounting height would be 14 feet. We would recommend that you use a Low-Bay Lighting Fixture for this application. Low-Bays have a special refractor built in them to disperse light out a little further for low mounting heights. You could expect about an 18 ft diameter radius of good coverage with this fixture. 250watts would be recommended.

Any recommendations on how best to illuminate a small fountain with uplighting? The fountain is only 2 ft wide - I want to use one low-volt fixture to light it from one side only. The fixture will need to be placed in a gravel walk-way that has good drainage. thx J
Look into the Focus Industries Well Lights . The lamps are adjustable, so aiming at the fountain should not be a problem. As with any in-ground lighting fixture, standing water will cause problems over time, so the drainage issue is something to pay very close attention to.

Christmas low voltage lights
I found your 6 low voltage clip lights (RLLD2089AME) and have a couple of questions. (I chose these because I'm not a big fan of the rope lights) 1) Can I connect this to my landscape lighting system? (I am running off of a 600w Malibu transformer) 2) The product I listed has an 18 gauge wire, my landscape wire is 12 gauge low voltage wire - will that cause any issues. 3) I would like to do up to 3 strings w/80 of the .5w bulbs. My exisiting load is 420w, so the additional load would be 40w*3= 120w + 420w = 540w on a 600w transformer. Does this work? Thanks.
Yes, you can put 540 watts on a 600 watt low voltage transformer! However, let's take a look at the calculations and how the wire plays an important role here even more than the transformer:
Wattage / voltage = Amperage.
12/2 wire is good for 20 amps maximum. 18/2 is good for 5 amps. Note the maximum of 80 lamps or 40 watts is due to the wire size on the clip lights. So, you can use a larger wire such as 12/2 or even 10/2 to supply power to multiple sections as described above. Frankly, I would power these holiday clip lights on a 24-volt transformer and not fool with your Malibu transformer. Why not double your capacity and have fewer splecer and longer runs? Remember, the higher the voltage, the less the amperage!

Outdoor lights with Security Cameras
I was looking into installing a single light pole with a security camera. Which type of light would work best with the security cameras and which light is the most efficient power consumer. 250 or 400 watt Metal Halide or Sodium or another type?
Depends on your situation, size of area, and height of pole you will use. Metal Halide will give you a better video image as the color of light will be Daylight White, rather than the Orangish glow of High Pressure Sodium. Look into our high power Flood Lights , and decide on a pole height. We can help with pole selection and light configuration.

rope lights in Alumawood patio cover
We're contemplating replacing our old wood patio cover with an Alumawood (aluminum) patio structure. Can the approx. 50ft 110 volt rope light that an electrician hardwired be safely used on the aluminum structure?
Yes, as long as your UL Approved 120-volt rope light product is plugged into a ground fault protected circuit.
If you plan to use a dimmer control for mood setting, install the dimmer on the load side of the GFCI device feeding the lights or it will trip when you start to dim the lights. The GFCI device sees this voltage reduction (dimming) as a fault condition on the line side. If you don't plan on a dimmer, we have a combination device.

replacement for Hadco wall washer
I have had the wiring from several of these lights deteriorate and fail. I have had to replace the sockets in every one of these lights. I never exceed the recommended wattage. Water intrusion is not an issue. If I buy cheap plastic lights at Home Depot as a replacement, I never have to replace hardware again. I would like a replacement light that has similar shape and color as the wall washer by Hadco, but is a different manufacturer since I've lost faith in them. What do you suggest?
Try Focus Industries, they make a variety of wall washing lights, and they come in a great variety of colors. Your problem with Hadco sounds strange, they are usually a great quality manufactuer. If you have recently purchased them, your local Hadco dealer should be able to get you replacement parts on Warranty for you.

12V landscape runs
Is it OK to have three separate home runs each with only one 20W well light fixture on it? I'm using #12-2 for all my runs and all runs are less than 100 ft. The other run has three 10W path lights and one 20W flood spliced at a hub 70 ft from 250W multi-voltage xformer.
Yes, it is fine to have multiple home runs back to the transformer. You are well below my recommended 100 watts or less per 100 foot of 12/2 cable rule. If you have a volt meter handy, I would read the voltages at the end of each run before stepping up the voltage at the transformer. This will prevent premature lamp failure due to over voltage conditions and help you balance the voltage for uniform lighting.

Halogen Puck light for glass cabinet
We have a smaill glass doored display cabinet and want to use a puck light. Is a halogen light too hot or must we purchase a xenon light? If yes, can we simply switch the halogen bulb with a xenon bulb?
Heat is a function of wattage. Either one of the halogen or xenon 20-watt puck lights will work in your cabinet. Depending on the voltage, they may be switched together.
If you choose the 120 volt puck lights, you don't have to bother with a low voltage transformer and any incandescent dimmer will work. We also have a LED puck light that produce very little heat!

I'm looking for an easy replacement for my NuTone 665RP heat-A-Ventlite. Ideally it would be something I could just replace without much construction. Any suggestions on a comparable model? I've had this model for years now and have had to replace the heating unit almost every year. Time to move on.

Look into the Panasonic Fans , find one that matches your housing dimensions, and you can pop out the Nutone.

high ceiling lighting
Hello, my main living room has 30 foot ceilings, there is lighting in the ceiling itself but it doesnt create a nice ambiance. The floor lamps and table lamps I have set up dont create anything nice either. I am looking for a soft concept, and one with reading light from lamps as well. There is ample wall space... any ideas or referals would be great, thanks

Damp location floods
I have already constructed a system of 12 120v floodlights at grade level providing uplighting across the entire front of my home. I like using the new flourescent floods due to low energy consumption. The problem that I am having is not from the bulbs but all the water that is getting in the inexpensive fixtures and shorting out. Being that these lamps are surrounded by water sprayers, it's a pretty brutal enviroment. What is your suggestion?
Your best bet is to replace your existing bullets with small fluorescent landscape lighting fixtures designed for outdoor use. You may pay a little more up front, but you will enjoy the troublefree performance of a well designed fixture. I am not a big fan of retrofit fluorescent lamps outdoors.

Blinking Xenon Light Fixtures
I had xenon under cabinet lighting installed about 5 years ago during a kitchen remodel. Durning the last year, 2 of these started turning themselves off and then will pop back on after a brief time. They are hard wired to 110. Do I need to replace the entire unit to get it repaired? I did the easy thing and replaced the bulb itself and of course it had no effect. Thanks for the guidance!
No, the transformer has a built-in thermal protector which is doing it's job. This is due to age of the transformer or to wattage issues exceeding the capacity of the transformer. Open up your fixture, measure the transformer, verify the wattage requirements and give us a call. We have several low voltage electronic transformers that should work.

Candelabra base sockets

I want to change the fiture on my chandlier to look like a candle, extend the socket up from oringinal socket about two inches. Then put on a lightbulb and lampshade, Is here apiece that can be purchased to achieve this effect? Thank you!
Not really. Your best bet is to simple change the candelabra base socket to another length. They come with adjustable brackets of various lengths so that you can customize the look. Unfortunately, we do not have those style of replacement sockets posted.

door jamb switch
I am deciding between the door jamb switch for my kitchen pantry and want to ask you why such difference in height of these 2 models: Perfectline - Door Jamb/Light Switches DN415 versus the Edwards - Door Jamb Switch EDW502A Are there durability difference? Thanks
The difference between door jamb switches is related to the physical size and more importantly the operating voltage. For a single door switch, the Edwards 120V jamb switch is the best choice. If you are trying to switch multiple cabinets, like in a kitchen, the low voltage option is a better solution. However, the 12V Edwards #44 option requires a remote low voltage transformer and a small lighting contactor. I would consult a local electrician if you are not comfortable with these wiring methods.

I need help in lighting my new family room. The dimension of the room is 19.5W x 17L x 10H Furnitures in the room are leather sofa, loveseat, 1 chair, 1 recliner, end tables, coffee table and a big screen TV on a TV console. Walls are white. Currently we only have one center ceiling light. We wish to add more lighting to create some ambiance for everyday activities and entertaining too. We want to add some recessed lights and some eyeball trims to highlight the art works. But we are not sure how to place those. Please help us light up our family room. Thank you.

Grafik Eye & dimmable CFL's
Can I safely use dimmable CFL's in fixtures controled by the Grafik Eye? (I don't want to damage the Grafik Eye system - the expense of repairing/replacing would really negate the electricity savings of the dimmable CFL's!)
It depends on the type of fluorescent lamp you are using. I would consult Lutron directly for clarification. Lutron does make a Grafik Eye fluorescent interface that must be used in conjunction with Lutron dimming ballasts.

Dimmer No Longer Working

We have a 6 zone dimmer system but Zone 5 no longer works correctly. It is stuck on the lowest dim setting or it is off - no in-between. Can you help me identify the part that needs to be replaced?
I would need to know what brand and what model you have to assist you. If this is a wall box system like a Lutron Grafik Eye, it must be replaced or sent to an electronics repair shop. Sounds like one of the components on the circuit board has failed.

door jam closet lighting
Hello, Im trying to light a closet with a 120v light and im trying to use low voltage for the door switches is there a product that can allow me to use a roller ball door switch to control a 120v flourescent light?
Yes, you need a small low voltage transformer and a small lighting contactor. The contactor acts like a switch for the line voltage power when the ball switch is activated. The ball switch sends low voltage current to the coil on the lighting contactor which closes the contacts and turns on the lights. Give us a call.

outdoor soffit lighting
I am looking for a recessed light housing that will fit into a 6 tall enclosed soffit. The pitch is 3/12, so I would need the angle of the bulb to be somewhat adjustable to illuminate straight down. the house is also on a salt water front lot in Seattle, so that corrosion resistance would be a plus.
I would take a look at our Halo H99T remodel housing. The adjustable Halo 998 trim will work with your slope. You basically use a hole saw to cut the soffit and push the wire up from outside instead of crawling in the attic. Pretty simple to install and cheap to replace when the salt air eats them up!

Outdoor lighting question
Home is one year old and is about 4000 sq ft. Did the landscaping already and has a wooded backyard. First: i want to light up the front of the house. Would like spot light to shine up the walls in the front( about 4 to 5 lights). can the low voltage lighting systems with a transformer give me enough light/brightness? if so what watt and how strong should the transformer be? Also, how long can (length)you run the wires on low voltage before it effects the brightness. Second: would like to light up two larger trees in the backyard. thay are about 60 feet high. Second
To answer your questions: Yes, low voltage systems can give you plenty of brightness. For your trees, due to the height, you may want to look into regular 120V , or high voltage options. We have several very useful articles on our web site that can give you great ideas on how to design your low voltage lighting system.

Thank you for your time. I am looking for a recessed dome ceiling light fixture that will be about 3' to 4' in diameter. I do not want shelf lighting for a dome, but rather a light itself that can be recessed that large into an existing ceiling. Do you have any suggestions for where I may find one? Thanks

I am installing a landscape light post in my yard...I am trying to find out what the standard height for the lamp post should be?? Thanks so much!

bulbs

we have outside security lights on the barn -- our problem is bugs -- the lights use a 175 wat medium base mercury vapor bulb that atracks gallons of bugs -- is there a bulb that is colored to lessen the impact of dead bugs?

Only a yellow light can help reduce the bugs. Short of a standard incandescent bug light, I would take a look at our high pressure sodium flood light sources. Bugs are attracted to both the light and the heat.

Replacement lenses
At our church we are looking for a source for replacement lenses for the bottom our 50 plus year old pendant fixtures. They have no manufacture name on them, they have 300 watt lamps in them so they do run warm. The original lenses are round, lightly frosted Pryex with several circles decreasing in size in the lightly frosted design, 11 1/4 in dia. 3/8's thick. We need five but would like to get ten as from time to time someone will drop one while changing lamps. If you can't help us would you think on any companies that might be able to. We are located in central Illinois. Thank you Bob

12 or 16 gauge cable for more than 250 watts
Hello, I got a 600 watts 12v transformer for lanscape lights, It is a 2-300 watt terminal block, the directions say that I should use a 12 gauge cable if I'm going to use more than 217 watts per block, but I only have a 16 gauge cable, I'm probably going to use about 250 watts per block. Would it be wise to use the 12 gauge cable instead the 16? or should I just go and buy the 16?
Please purchase 12/2 direct burial cable and forget the 16 guage wire.
Let's do the math:
250 watts / 12 volts = 20.83 amps!
20 gauge cable is rated for 20 amps and 16 gauge cable is rated for 10 amps! Check out our "How to design a system" page for more information! The lower the voltage, the bigger wire you need!

70 Watt High Pressure Sodium Mini Light Pack Wall
I recently purchased two 70 Watt High Pressure Sodium Mini Light Pack Wall TEC PWPB3A but I am not sure which wires connect to the black and white house wires. Can you help me with this?
Your wallpack fixture is designed to work on many different voltages such as 120, 240 and 277. In your case, you should use the wire marked with 120V and connect it to your black wire and the white wire to your white wire. The green or bare wire is the gound wire. Let us know how it goes and please turn off the power to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

120volt Rope light
I will be installing a cornice moulding dropped down about 3 inches from the ceiling wherein I will tuck in the rope lighting and plug into a 120V supply from a switched dimmer.. Can this rope light be dimmed? My fireplace is stone to the ceiling and will cause a break in the cornice. What do I buy to continue the rope light electrical connection on the other side without having rope lights across my fireplace? What is better to use in this application - 120 Volt or 24 volt?
Yes, you can certainly dim rope lighting fixtures with any Lutron standard incandescent dimmer switch. I would stick with the 120 volt rope lighting as it does not require a transformer and making it easier to install. You can use the supplied connectors to jump accross the fireplace area. You will need to use romex if the wire is concealed in the wall.

glare shield for AL-13-sm focus path light
hi, I'm considering using the Focus AL-13-SM path light for a project-I'm familiar with them, but I know that if they are above eye level, it's hard to minimize the glare from them... I saw something called a glare guard, is there such a thing for this model light? thanks
Yes, focus makes a glare shield for most of their low voltage path lights. Unfortunately, we do not seem to have that item posted. Give us a call and we can order them for you. You can also make one if you are handy. Aluminum foil or any lightweight metal can be cut and installed inside the glass lens to customize the light distribution.

Landscape Lights
I have some halogen landscape lights (MR16) that seem to be on some days and sometimes not at all. I tried replacing the bulbs but that didn't work. I have tested each light socket and confirmed that there is 12v coming into each fixture but the lightbulbs (new or old) will not light up. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Sounds to me like your MR16 sockets are bad. I would change them or consider installing some new directional accent lighting fixtures. The sockets are the first item to fail in both interior and exterior MR16 fixtures.

landscape lighting
I am installing some lighting along a run of hedges approximately 100' long and using about 20 10w flood lights. I am also using 4 50w floods to light up a big oak tree and probably 6 to light up 3 other trees. I am using a 600w transformer. What is the best way to run the wires, and what do you think of the set-up? Thank you
Check out our "How to design low voltage lighting" for tips and information. If you are using 12/2 direct burial cable, it is good for 20 amps or roughly 200 watts of light. Try and split your loads into groupings using the 100 watt per 100 feet rule. It will take more wire but, you will be less likely to encounter voltage drop issues. Your plan sounds good!

Dimmer switch installation

How to installing a dimmer switch to rope lighting new and add it on to a two-gang outlet. What type of dimmer switch and triple gang outlet would you recommend

Any standard Lutron incandescent dimmer switch would work well on your 120-volt rope light. Our light rope produces 5 watts per foot totalling 500 watts per 100 feet. Any 600 watt dimmer control is fine.

voltage drop
Is there a formula for calculating voltage drop? I have a residential landscape lighting job and I need to know if I will have voltage drop with my fixtures. Thanks!!!
Watts divided by voltage equals amps. Check out our simple easy to use voltage drop formula.
A good rule of thumb is no more than 100 watts on 100 feet of cable. You can't go wrong using this guideline. 12/2 direct burial cable is good for 20 amps and 10/2 cable is designed for up to 30 amps. You are better off installing multiple homerun cables with lights in groups, instead of one continuous cable.

WIring your motion detectors
Subject is your RAB - Motion Detector Single Swoop Quartz Flood Kit: The back of our home is abut 45-50 ft wide. Because of the lay of the land and we are on a slope, one detector cannot illuminate the entire rear yard. Referencing the above model, would I be able to install two motion detectors and wire them so that: 1. Have both detectors wired so that if one detector senses motion and is activated, both detectors will turn on (and off together after the specified time elapses). 2. Have a light switch somewhere in the circuit so that I may turn the lights on by the switch to illuminate the back yard if I so choose 3. Turn the Switch OFF and have the motion detectors automatically revert to their normal function. If this can be done and you have a diagram that shows me the appropriate connections, I would appreciate it if you could email it to me. Thanks.
You are better off using a single motion detector device to control several sets of exterior floodlights. Motion detectors are not designed for 3-way wiring and you are asking for trouble getting them to work correctly on security flood lights. Most motion sensors have a manual feature that is activated when the switch is toggled on and off. The RAB Goodnight motion sensor has a unique dimming feature. Keep it simple!

Have you considered using a low profile fluorescent under cabinet light fixture? They have a outlet centered in the back of the fixture to accept wiring coming out of the wall. You could also install a small wood or metal shield under your cabinet to eliminate glare from normal viewing angles.

12 volt rope light
Can your 12 volt rope light be connected to the standard low voltage out door lighting system?
Yes, our low voltage rope lighting products can most certainly be connected to a outdoor low voltage lighting transformer as long as you have the capacity. The RLLD 12 volt rope light requires 5.5 watts per foot.

I would appreciate if you could explain to me via wiring diagram how I can do the loop wiring installation and the T installation using the T connector for 12 Volts lighting. Regards, Jerry

Security Lighting
We need to purchase approx. (5) lights and need some help with specifics. We have a 100' x 200' building and want to light up the outside areas. The building is approx. 20'high. We would like a very powerful light with a timer/photo cell on it so it only comes on at night and turns off and daylight. What do you suggest?
You have several options for security lighting. Our 400-watt metal halide wall pack light fixtures will easily mount to the building and provide excellent light levels. If you want to project the light farther out from the building, I would suggest a metal halide directional floodlight fixture. Both types of lights can be controlled with a photocell control. I prefer controlling the entire switch leg in lieu of individual controls for each light.

dimmer for christmas tree
I HAVE A GE ARTIFICAL CRISTMAS TREE WITH 800 C5 WHITE LIGHTS THE WATTAGE IS 72WATTS PER SET OF 100,I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS THERE IS PLUG IN DIMMER I COULD USE. PS TREE IS TOO BRIGHT FOR THE ROOM IT WILL BE IN THANK YOU JOE AGRESTO
The only Lutron plug in dimmer control switch we have is rated at 300 watts. For a artificial Christmas tree with 576 total watts, you will need to split your light strings into two loads and use two dimmer controls. Otherwise, you will need to fabricate a custom two gang dimming box that contains a Lutron Ariadni 1000-watt dimmer control, duplex receptacle with a grounded power cord. Plug the box into the wall, plug the tree lighting into the box and the dimmer will control the intensity.

Outdoor Speaker Replacement
We have an outdoor speaker by the pool that needs replacement. It's a rock speaker, but we only need the speaker not the rock. It is an OWI #573 and is 70 volts. Unsure of wattage. Is there a product you offer as a replacement that will fit the dimensions inside the rock allowed for the OWI? Please advise if you need more information...or, I could email you some digital photos if that would help. Thanks!
We only sell complete rock speaker units and not replacement speakers. It will be more cost effective and time saving to just purchase a complete outdoor rock speaker. That way you get a warranty and will not have to deal with returns or moisture.

Hampton Bay 120v under cabinet lights
I just purchased 6 of these to distribute under the cabinets in my kitchen. My desire is to hard wire these rather than plug into the receptacle. I'd like to pull all six wire sets together into one piece of lamp cord and then fish that singe cord behind the wall and into a receptacle with a regular light switch. From a safety standpoint, is this a good idea. If not, can you suggest and alternative approach? Thanks
You would be better off terminating the cords in a formal junction box of some type. Code requires that you install romex wire or B/X wire inside a wall.

12V Halogen Transformer
At a store in Amherst, NY, I bought a recessed halogen fixture that came with American Lighting 60 watt transformer model WH-601E6A-4 Class 2. For some reason the one that came with the fixture does not work. I can't find the product. Do you have it?
We have a Hatch electronic transformer that is exactly the same as the American Lighting model. It is rated at 80 watts and should not be a problem even though you have a 60 watt model. Both models require a minimun 20 watt load to operate.

24 volt lighting landscape
I would like to run 24v lighting outside for voltage drop. Is it possible to use standard fixtures and just change the lamps. Thanks Jim
The best way to overcome voltage drop, outside of using the correct size direct burial cable, is by installing a multi-tap transformer. This will allow you to boost the voltage on long runs to maintain the desired output. Break your system up into several groupings of lights so that you can vary the taps. I would not recommend that you change the lamps to 24 volts as you lose most of your lamping options.

Lighting for an arena
Hi, i am based in the UK and would like some advice on how many lights i require for a 40m x 20m (132 feet x 66feet) arena to enable riding at night and to show all areas of the arena without patches. also the lights are being run from a generator as we have no mains electric here. please let me know asap.
Look into our 100 x 100 package for assistance, ulitimately the square footage is close to what you have. If you want even illumination, then number of fixtures, mounting height, and wattage of fixtures should match close to what we have designed. Our layouts were done by our IES certified lighting designer, and will offer even illumination throughout.
Hopefully you have large generators as you would need 12,000watts to run the lights.

parking lot and facade lighting
I am looking for two parking lot lights to be mounted approximately 24 ft on top of a parapet wall cap. What do you recommend As well I am looking for two lights to illuminate the facade of the same building 24 ft tall and 60 ft wide. The current light fixtures are set approximately 15 ft from the facade and spaced 50 ft apart.
We can usually work up a configuration to work for just about any application. It is best to get a better visualization of the area that we would be mounting lights to. An image, or basic drawing would suffice. For the rest of the facade lighting, are you trying to replace existing fixtures, or simply add to a current set-up? We would need to determine wattage desired, style of fixuture, and the mounting situation.

Lutron Dimmers 3-way4-way

Have recessed can lighting in our kitchen on three switches. First two switches are 3-ways with one black screw each. Third switch has two black screws assume this is a 4-way switch. Installed a Lutron Maestro 3-way master dimmer with a companion 3-way dimmer for our kitchen works but third switch must be left in the on position and cant use. Does Lutron make a 4-way two black screws on one side that will work with these new 3-ways Sorry have only worked with 3-ways in the past and the first time dealing with a 4-way switch. Thanks for your insite and recommendation.

Should the concrete footing be placed on an island landscaping what should the concrete height normally be with a shoe box pole of 24 high and more.

It is always best to install concrete footings for commercial lighting poles. Soil conditions and wind factors determine the actual size of the footing. We suggest you contact a local engineer for specific instructions.

I want an energy efficient light that I can mount on the outside ends of my horse barn to light the areas outside on each end. It needs to have a sensor so that it will come on at dark and go off in the morning. I would prefer a light that can be mounted to the side of a metal building wall so that the installation looks good not scabbed on. Thanks, Rodney

Reccessed can lights blinking
What's up with the thermal breaker going off and on in the can? The cans are approved for insulation use and are heavily insulated in the attic. I have two jobs with this problem. Electrician says to remove the insulation from on top of the can. This is not acceptable, for it creates a major heat loss spot at each fixture. Would appreciate some help with this soon. MJA
Sounds like you have exceeded the wattage capacity of your fixtures which is causing the thermal protector to cycle on and off. Check the UL sticker inside the recessed down light housing for approved lamp types and maximum wattage requiements.

fixture selection for oak tree uplighting
On July 24 2007 I ordered Order 119084 three 100 watts metal halide bullet type fixtures to uplight oak trees. I need one more but I want it to have a warmer color. I think I need to use high pressure sodium or halogen lamps. If I am correct what flood fixture do you recommend for each type of lamp.
Thanks for shopping with us!
We have special order deluxe white metal halide lamps that will add a slight red tone to the output. Your other option is to experiment with replacement lenses. Give our sales department a call and they can assist you with this off the menu item. Your other option is to use a mercury vapor lamp and introduce a blue green color to your trees. This makes them look healthy and attractive. FYI - You can use a mercury vapor lamp on a metal halide ballast. You can't go the other way though.

replacement transformers
I have three pendant lights with 50 watt halogen bulbs and 12 volt transformers located in the canopies wired into a Lutron electronic dimmer switch over the bar in my kitchen. Two of the transformers have failed in about 2 12 years. I would like to replace the 3 cheap Chinese transformers with one quality transformer. What would you suggest
I would go with a Hatch transformer as they are some of the best in the marketplace. The small Hatch VS75 12 volt transformer will easily fit in your existing canopy and work well with your Lutron dimmer switch.

outdoor security lighting
We are searching for an outside security light similar to your Lumark LG175M fixture. We prefer US made product because the foreign produced item lacks UV protection on cover, it turns yellow after a couple of years. The electronics flicker from the beginning until burnout. Please let us know what you have available. Thanks
Most of these exterior security lights are considered entry level and come with plastic lenses. Lumark and Rab both make very nice fixtures that have UV inhibitors mixed into the plastic lens. You can't go wrong with the Lumark light you selected or any of our outdoor security lighting fixtures.

lighting a stone wall
What would you use to uplight a stone accent wall that is an arc-shaped (curved wall) 12 feet long? i am lighting the wall from the patio side (mounted in the hardscape, not on the grass side of the wall). The wall will not have coping, so rope lighting cannot be tucked underneath. I was thinking a few small well lights with a partial lid or ones that tilt, set into the patio at the base of the wall, but i am concerned about having to use too many in order to create an even flow of light.
Without a lip or coping to tuck in LED rope lighting, I would suggest using 4-5 small low voltage grade level up lights to wash the stone wall. We have some Focus MR16 brass well lights that will accept a linear spread lens to help shape the light correctly. For best results, incorporate a drainage system into these lights to prevent water build up and future problems. You will also need a 12 volt power transformer and some 12/2 direct burial cable to complete the project. I would run an individual wire from each light back to the transformer using PVC conduit as a sleeve. Enjoy!

Outdoor lighting
I have already installed a set of low-voltage landscape lights which are connected to a transformer with a clock to control when they go on % off. I would like to have the ability to control turning the lights on & off from inside my home, in other words a remote control. What products do you have that might work for me. Thank you.
That depends on the type of outdoor lighting transformer you have. If you have a built in timer control, you will need to remove the clock trippers and leave the switch in the on position on the transformer. Then you can either use a remote timer control or a photocell. Your other option is to install a switch inside and use a Lutron Spacer switch with a Lutron hand held remote control.

Adding 110 V outlet to existing feed to transforme
My friend has a landscaped area surrounded by a driveway. There is existing landscape lighting with a 220V feed in the landscaped area. He wants to install an outlet in the landscaped area. Rather than run a new wire (due to the driveway that would be very difficult) can I wire nut into one side of the 220 volt feed? There are only 4 lights fed off the transformer so the consumption relative to the feed is minimal.
First, I would suggest confirming the 220 volt power supply is a dedicated circuit coming directly from the breaker panel. If so, you can remove it from the double pole breaker and convert it to a 120 volt circuit by rearranging the wiring at the panel. This will allow you to install a GFCI recepacle outside and use any 120 volt light or power transformer. Take a look at our handy high voltage landscape lighting kits or our low voltage lighting kits.
Last resort, you could install a buck and boost transformer to reduce the voltage from 220v to 120v. I would suggest calling a licensed electrician if you consider this option.

VS12-150 Hatch Transformer
We finished a part of our basement and installed three separate lighting tracks each with Hatch VS12-150 Transformers. On the tracks are four Halo LV309 fixtures with MR-11 35W bulbs, a total of 140W per track. All tracks are wired to a single household switch. The lights often flash on-and-off on a single track as if the transformer is unable to handle the load. One transformer just failed and to solve another track's flashing problem, I deinstalled two of the fixtures so now the draw is only 70W (2x35W). I am reluctant to buy another VS12-150 since one failed and the other can't handle four 35W lights. What are my options? Thanks for your help.
Hatch transformers have a built in circuit breaker protection to prevent overload or to detect short circuits. How far away from the track did you install the transformer? What size wire did you use from the transformer to the track? I would make sure that you are allowing the transformers to breath and dissipate heat. Otherwise, they should be working fine. Just double check your wiring.

RF remote Control switch for 800 Watt transformer
I've been searching for a RF remote control for my outdoor lighting 800 watt Hadco transformer. The RF function must be cpable of turning on a 800 watt outdoor lighting transformer at a distance of a min. of 100 feet to the source of cureent (an outdoor electricical outlet. Ideally the R/F ENABLED MODULE that the RF switch would work with could handle more than 900 watts. Any suggestions? I've looked at the Black and Decker solution (Freewire) yet this will only handle 500 watts maximum. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rob
Any RF switch device such as a Lutron 1000-watt Spacer will control your magnetic low voltage transformer. Focus makes a high voltage power supply that has built in dimmers for several zones and an option for X-10 controls. You can also use a lighting contactor to fool the device of your choice!

light switch
I have a light, fan, heater combo unit in my bathroom. It is controlled by a 3 toggle switch unit on the wall. The toggles, which switch from side to side as opposed to up and down, are stacked on top of each other. The switch box is the size as a single switch box. The cover plate is metal and is actually labeled above each perspective switch light, fan, and heater. The switch is going bad and I can't seem to find a new one anywhere - looked at electrical stores and have done internet searches. Don't need to replace the cover plate, just the switch. Any ideas? Thanks much

Contact www.nutone.com as they sell replacement vent fan and heater parts. I would imagine the plate will automatically come with the switches.

Two Story Foyer Fixture Size
Im ordering an inverted pendant for a clients two story foyer which has a ceiling height of 18 feet. The upstairs window is about 44 wide and the width of the upstairs wall is about 67. I have a choice of a fixture that is 22 by 22 or one that is 31 by 31. Which one would better fit the wall width and the ceiling height
My preference would the larger of the two. It seems more in scale with the foyer. Try making a cardboard mock up which would help you visualize the fixture in the space.

Step / Block Lighting
I want to put some step lighting in a raised concrete slab off my patio where we will be putting a spa. Our landscape designer quoted Vista lights, however their installation guidelines state that you can not have them with in 10' of a spa or pool. I like the Focus SL-17 series, are there any in that type that are sealed and can be in the vicinity of a spa? Thank you for your time.
The Focus SL-17 is a great little step light. For safety reasons, the National Electrical Code requires a six foot distance between light fixtures, pools and spas. This is true for both high voltage and the low voltage step lights you plan to install. Just install a GFCI device to control the remote transformer powering your step lights. If you follow this guideline, you should have no problems.

Gas Post Lantern outside
I cannot light the mantles on our gas lantern out front of our house. When I try to light mantles they just burn up not lighting. There was a time I smelled gas but do not any longer. I miss the lantern and want to fix the problem. Do you know what the problem could be Where should I start Please help Thanks

I would start your troubleshooting exercise back at the gas meter by checking that the check valve is on. Then trace the plastic tube from the gas meter to the gas light fixture. If you have good pressure and not a cut tube, the problem is in the lantern itself. Try cleaning out the orifice on each mantle holder. Those are the tiny little holes which regulate the flow of gas. If these are clogged up, the lantern will not work properly. Your local gas company will assist you if you call them and express concern. Afterall, they are interested in selling the gas and providing a safe product. Good luck!

Switch for Outdoor Lighting
We are installing a light for a sports court and would like to install a timer switch to turn it on and off. What type or brand of switch would be the best for extreme coldheat in Utah
I would consider using a Tork mechanical time clock in conjunction with a Square D lighting contactor. The lighting contactor is used to control loads over 40 amps and is basically a big switch. The time clock will be used to turn the contactor on and off.

Xenon light fixture
Why would linkable GE Xenon light bar have to be mounted horizontally? The safety warning said do not mount on walls or vertical surface. Is it because of danger of touching hot light?
Good question. It has nothing to do with the operating position of the light bulb and must be related to safety.

Landscape lighting

Whats the difference or advantage of using MR11 vs MR16. Thanks much
MR16's have a longer lamp life, available in higher wattages, and are used in a wider variety of landscape lighting fixtures. The MR11, is smaller, its greatest advantage, and can is used in very small compact fixtures.

cove lighting

I am interested in cove lighting for a huge arched barrel ceiling where the walls arch up and roll into this high arched ceiling. I am installing a light valance to define where the wall ends and the ceiling starts so that I can switch pain colors and add a warm glow to the room. Any product suggestions? I don't want any scallops. If it could be a controlled light dimmable or something that isn't too bright or too dim. Thanks 262.352.9121

WHAT LIGHT TO USE?
I HAVE THREE AREAS ON THE FRONT OF MY HOUSE I WOULD LIKE TO USE UP LIGHTING TO ILLUMINATE. THE AREAS ARE 4 FT, 4 FT AND 3 FT WIDE WITH THE ILLUMINATION TO NOT EXCEED 10 FT IN HEIGHT.I'VE BEEN INTERESTED IN THE PAR 36 LV WELL LIGHT DUE TO THE ABILITY TO ADJUST THE ANGLE AND LEVEL WITHIN THE LIGHT ITSELF. I NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE CORRECT LIGHT TO USE AND/OR WHAT OPTION OF LIGHT BULB I SHOULD USE. I WOULD APPRECIATE A RECOMMENDATION OF A TRANSFORMER THAT COULD BE EVENTUALLY EXPANDED ON TO ILLUMINATE OUR POOL AREA NEXT SUMMER. THANK YOU.
Par36 well lights work great for this application. Consider one of our Focus Transformers for power. It is possible to have a dimming function integrated into the system which would give you better control over your light levels. For bulb choices consider the width of the areas you are trying to illuminate: "Flood" bulbs should work just fine.

Putting green Lights
I have a small putting green in my backyard and am interested in installing your PGL-04 as my lighting source. The green is kidney shaped and covers about 500 sq ft. I think that six or seven lights would provide sufficient illumination. Im a little out of my comfort zone with the 110V fixture so I have a few questions. The total parameter is 123 feet. There are six irrigation heads in place The green is about 12 feet from access to electricity. Will six fixtures still cover it Will we still be able to run the fixtures from one source are the compact fluorescent bulbs available in black light from any manufacturer
The PGL-04's are only available in 120v. You should look into the PGL-01. This would offer you a low-voltage option. Have a look at the beam spread to get an idea of light output. Six fixtures should be just fine for your green size.

RLLD3559TEC stake or stem
RLLD3559TEC is what i am looking at - what is difference between mounting stem and stakes? I need about 20 and my current ligts all have stakes at bottom. Do I need a stake and stem? Thanks
The mounting stem gives the light a particular height from the ground. The stake stabilizes the light into your ground. You will need both in order to properly install the light. Although, there may be a possibility that the stakes you currently have will fit into the mounting stem for this particular light.

Timer Won't Advance
We have low voltage landscape lighting with a timer. Our power went out in a storm two nights ago, and ever since, the timer won't advance. We can manually turn it and the lights go on and off, so it appears the power to it is ok. Why won't the clock advance on its own?
Sounds like the motor has failed on your low voltage transformer as a result of the loss of power. It is not uncommon for electric components to fail should the voltage vary beyond specified limits. You can either put the existing timer on a photocell control or purchase a stand alone timer. Either way, be sure and leave the current clock in the on position.

I already have a nutone exhaust fan which works very well. Do you sell separate heat lamps without the light and fan?

We have replacement heat lamps and a couple of heat lamp units for you to choose from. Have you seen our inexpensive heat/fan combination fan or the dual lamp heat/fan unit? It might be more effective to just replace the vent fan you have with a combination unit.

High voltage vs low voltage
I have an existing high voltage system in place in my landscape is it true that by using a low voltage system i would save in my utility bill?
The quickest way to reduce your energy costs and save money is to install a dimmer control switch on your landscape lighting system. This will not only reduce your maintainence costs but allow you to set the mood. Why spend the money on a new low voltage lighting kit when you can simply install a dimmer?

Unobtrusive MR8 Fixture for address light
I want to light my 3 dimensional address numbers that are mounted vertically to a 6x6 post. There is a handrail about 4 feet directly below the post that a fixture could be mounted to, but I would prefer something small that won't be too obtrusive. I found a fixture By focus industries that uses an MR8 lamp but none of the fixtures I could find have a mount that would work. can you suggest anything?
I very much like the Focus MR8 directional accent lighting fixture that you have selected. I would mount the accent light using a round canopy flange designed for just this type of application. Of course, you will need an inexpensive outdoor lighting transformer to power up this light.

transformer inside
I am resurfacing my deck and want to incorporate step lights. I will add landscape lights later. I want to mount the transformer in my basement direct wire not plug in. I would still like to have a timer and photocell. Hopefully there is a cost effective recommendation without stainless exterior, etc. 600W multi-tap.
We have many outdoor lightng transformers that can be remotely mounted. You can certainly mount a time clock adjacent to the transformer however, your photocell will need to go outside facing north. This 600-watt multi-tap transformer, although stainless, is a great price. You can remove the cord if necessary to hardwire. The plug and plug features make this a good solution for your job.

3/8 Rope Lights

Plan to route a slot in crown molding and insert rope lights. Can the rope lights make a hard 90 degree turn? If not, is there a low profile connector cord to connect from one rope to another? Is there a design sample kit of rope lights that a can purchase? Tnx. al
Two things... 3/8 inch rope light is no longer available, and to answer your question, rope light does not make a very hard 90deg turn. May be best to make separate straight runs.

School bus stop lighting
I want to light a bench at the end of my drive so my daughter has light around when waiting for the bus in the morning.. Would like to put just 2 fixtures on the run, but it is along way from the house 295 ft. one fixture a flood pointing toward her bench and the other on a post with the address both right together at the end.. Nothing else on the line... is it possible to make that long of a run and get any amount of light output... If so what size controller, wire and bulbs for the best output..
You best bet for a run that long is to stay with a high voltage (120V) direct burial cable. That way you can maintain the voltage over that distance and provide your daughter with a good security light. This is not a job for low voltage lighting unless you use a multi-tap transformers and step up the voltage. You might even consider either a post top lantern, floodlight fixture, or a motion light fixture.

Electronic transformers
Hi, I wish to dim 6 circuits of low voltage lights using a lighting control module which sends out a DSI control signal and 230volts. I have been told that I need to use a tridonic 150 Va one4all electronic transformer but these are very expensive. I have 6 circuits to control. Can you suggest an alternative that I can use? Thanks, Shane.

moonlighting
Looking to moonlight a 20 X 40 patio from soffit mount 25 up. What do you recommend for that classic John Watson soft moonlight
Well, to create moonlighting it is always best to create shadows. Mounting lights on the house does not allow you to create the classic John Watson look. However, if no trees are close by, mounting the lights on the house is your best bet. I would use a 50-watt mercury vapor fixture which produces a very nice and soft blue green light. You are better off using several small mercury vapor fixtures rather than one big one.

sports court lighting packages

We have a small multi sport court we are completing. Size is 40 ft. x 80 ft. What is the minimum number of lights and posts required to give lighting for a court this size Thank you Paula Smith

We have several outdoor sport lighting solutions that may be of interest to you. However, to answer your question I would use a minimum of two pole lights and four if your budget allows. Check out the photometrics on our half court basketball court solution. If you double that, it is about the same size as your new sport court.

Sign Lighting for a trailer

Hello, I have a Food Concession trailer which is 6' W 12' L 7' H and I would like to light it up for the viewing of the graphics at night. I would like a low profile light so that it won't stick out so much when trailering it . The trailer will be parked for the winter months at a location that I will have a 110 volt power source. The gooseneck light fixtures seem to stick out too far. Please advise ...Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Lenny

Step light choices
I have some contractors installing some steps and a retaining wall for me. They are pouring concrete and will be installing a stone veneer. They plan on installing horizontal single gang boxes in the wall. I have not yet decided 12v or 120v lighting as that is another discussion. What I would like to know is what are the options of lights that will fit in the electrical boxes. A choice of 12v and 120v would be appreciated. I am thinking the sl -02 will work but whould i not need the box anymore or does the box fit in the electrical box. Thanks
It is VERY important that they install the correct boxes! You can get the SL-02 back box with socket assemly in advance of the face plate if nescessary (FA-56). The correct box will not fix inside the usual boxes, rather it is used instead of. The SL-02 is an excellent choice for a step light in both the line voltage and the low voltage versions. closet lighting w/fan
We just turned our son's room into our walk-in closet. We now enter this room through what use to be the back of his closet. (now our walkway from our room into our closet) The light switch is on the other side of the room from our new entrance. We'd like to install a motion sensor for lighting but are concerned that it may not work with a ceiling fan. We leave the fan on at all times for circulation. Will a sensor work if a ceiling fan is left running or will it think someone is always in the room? Thanks for your help - Lori

Just leave the fan on the pull chain and put the closet light on a motion detector. It may require you to install another wire to split the loads.

Photo sensor

I recently purchased a high pressure sodium wall pack with photocell. At night it goes on but during the day it seems to cycle on and off constanly even in the bright day light. What's up?

That's weird. It's usually the other way around. I suspect the photocell is defective and it should be replaced. If you place black electrical tape over the glass window of the photocell, does it stay on or cycle?

outdoor rock lighting
We just bought a house with rock lights in the garden. Only 2 out of 6 are working. Have changed bulbs. In front garden we have 2 lights. One was out, I changed it, it worked for about 10 min. and now they are both out. Do they all work on the same connector, like christmas lights, or do I have a bigger problem
I suspect your rock light propblem is voltage related. Landscape lights are typically not wired in series like christmas lights. That means if one goes out, the others should work. See if you can borrow a voltage meter from a neighbor or hire an electrician to verify that you are indeed getting 11-12 volts to each light from the transformer. That is the only way to determine if you are getting too much voltage which is causing the bulbs to burn out.

HPS Wall Pack
Item Number: RLLD2649TEC Is the bulb included? Can you use a 60 watt with this fixture? What is the bulb part number for the 70 watt?
Yes, the lamp is included with this 70 watt high pressure sodium wall pack. It will not operate on a different lamp as the ballast is sized for a 70 watt lamp.

Warehouse Illumination
100 YEAR OLD WAREHOUSE: gabled roof, high bay, 16' high at the corner x 60' wide x 140' long, no windows or glass. Ceiling / walls / floor have never been painted. How many 100 watt bulbs (at 15' with no reflectors) would be required to properly illuminate? Thanks. Bob
That's a good question. I am not sure 100-watt lamps will do very much in this size of facility. To be frank, I would not use an incandescent lighting source. I would use a high performance fluorescent screw-in lamp with a 150-200 watt equivalent or upgrade to a warehouse HID lighting fixture. You will be glad you did! Give us a call and we will design a package that is right for you!

Parking Lot Lighting
is there a way to add heads to an exsisting pole light without having to remove the whole pole from the floor i have seen light that were strapped onto the pole were can i find them if possible
You can certainly add commercial exterior flood lights or banners to existing parking lot poles or decorative lighting poles with tenon arms and other pole lighting accessories. However, by doing so, you are adding wind load or drag to the existing pole which it may not be designed to handle. Our staff of outdoor pole lighting specialists can assist you with these types of issues. Let us know what we can do to help!

kitchen ceiling light
Our kitchen ceiling (measuring something like 18" x 48")light needs to be replaced. It is nothing special, but I would like to replace it along with a small pendant light and chandelier over the dining room table and think they should be similiar since they are in very close proximity. I like the new bronzes or stained glass look. My style of home is somewhat eclectic-antiques. Perhaps not enough information from me, but do you have any suggestions. Lowe's and Menards do not offer in their design area. (I do see pendant and chandelier that I like, but no kitchen ceiling with pazazz and thought I need to find another of similiar dimension. Please help..!! Thank you!

I will ask a lighting specialist to contact you with assistance in selecting a decorative hanging fixture for your kitchen lighting project. Finding the right fixture is not as easy as you think and our lighting consultants can help you wade through the choices. Pressure sensor
Recently I was in a higher-end house and the owner had installed a pressure sensor on the stairs, activated at both the top and bottom on the first steps. He was unable to tell me who made them so I'm hoping you've at least heard of them, and it wasnt some trick he was pulling on me.
This is a device typically used with a whole house automation systems like Lutron or Vantage Lighting Controls. The low voltage pressure switch triggers a relay which turns on the lights. I am sure someone makes a stand alone system like this however, we do not carry such devices. Please let me know if you find a suitable solution to your project.

Malibu 600 W Transformer
I have a Malibu 600W transformer with 6 terminals labeled A B C. The instructions talk about terminals A & B but make no mention of the C termianl. What is the C terminal used for? Thanks Andy
Typically, outdoor lighting transformers are designed for a maximum of 25 amp loads per circuit. 300/12=25 amps. So, your 600 watt Malibu transformer has two 25 amp circuits, hence the third terminal. One should be the common and the other two should be the two circuits. I would check out the Malibu Lighting website for more specific information on the A, B and C terminals.

indoor horse arena lighting

My riding arena is 100'x 175'x(14-30' tall). What kind of lighting would you recommend? Our winters can be 25 deg. below zero at night and the arena is not heated. It is located in Creede, CO.
High Bay Lighting would work perfect for this application. For cold climates choose fixtures with a Pulse-Start ballast, as these are designed for low-temperature start-up. General rule of thumb for amount needed: You can expect a 1 : 1 ratio , meaning, Mounting Height = Diameter of Coverage Below Fixture... 14' mounting = 14' diameter of light coverage. 175 to 250 watt Metal Halide fixtures would be suffiicient

beam spread / quantity of fixtures
What is the beam spread for the LSI - Angled Reflector with Gooseneck ADINC? I have a 75' long painted sign on the side of a brick building that I need to illuminate. How many fixtures will I need?
You could expect a light disperal around 4' per fixture, placing each Gooseneck Light so that you have 4" to 5" of over lap between each light pattern, you could expect to use 19 fixtures in total.

Sure Light LED EXIT light withbattery

We moved into a new building with two of your exit signs Model AP70RWHDH and went to check and the lights would not come on. Found out the battery was not plug up to charge. Question: Where to hook up the battery to what terminal. One side is already wired in. Can't find any of old instructions and accidently tried to put end on a place and shorted out exit lights. Please help. Thanks, Mark

Please contact the manufacturer for specific instructions. I am not personally familiar with the wiring inside that specific exit sign and I do not have a schematic for reference. If necessary, they can supply a new battery.

Low Voltage Post Light

I currently have four low voltage post lights _ acrylic white globe lights with transformers. I'd like to simply replace the globe lights with a more updated light. I want to use the existing low voltage wiring and just replace with lantern style lights. I'm having trouble finding low voltage pole/post lights.

Ropelight Sculpting
Is it possible to blackout or obstruct sections of ropelight with, say, electrical tape to define lettering (like neon tubing)? Also, does the ropelight have the flexiblity to bend at a right angle?
Yes, you can tape or paint sections of light rope to conceal lamps. This does however entrap heat which may be an issue over time. Not all bulk 120-volt light rope can be bent at sharp angles. It depends on the product and how the wiring is configured. Have you seen our rope light accessories for special connectors? Are you looking for a particular sports team sign by chance?

70 watt HPS wall mount fixture
I have (2) 70 watt HPS wall mount fixtures (RLLD2649TEC). Both are wired with a switch and have photo cells. the switch is left on and teh photo cell turns the light on/off accordingly. Both now have either bad photo cells or ballasts. Both are 2 years old and were installed by a licensed electrican. I am reluctant to replace them with the same kind if I have to replace the fixture every 2 years. Can you tell me anything about the required wiring, photo cell and ballast life? Is there something I could have done to prolong their life? Thank you.
It sounds like you are describing a very normal installation. However, these fixtures should not have failed in two years. It sounds to me like something funny is wrong with the installation. I would check the voltage at each fixture to confirm that you are indeed supplying 120 volt power. Are they blinking on and off? If so, this may be caused by reflected light which is fooling the photocell to turn off. Try putting black tape over each photocell to see if that clears up the problem. I hope one of these ideas is helpful.

Beeping smoke detector
We just had installed your combination hard wired smoke / CO2 detector by an electrician, and after a couple of days it started to beep. Now every minute or so, it beeps twice quickly and the smoke indicator light flashes once. Any idea what it could be?
Have you checked to see that you are getting 120 volt power to the combination smoke and CO2 detector? Beeping is a warning signal that either the house current or battery current is not operating properly. You might ask the electrician to take another look for safety and peace of mind.

Putting green lighting

I have a putting green being installed of 600 sq ft with diminsions of approximately 35 X 15. How many putting green lights are needed of the low voltage or 10 volt yolt.
I would use 4-6 low voltage lighting putting green fixtures. For something a little nicer, thats holds your putter and a cold beer, check out the fluorescent low voltage putting green lighting fixtures. You will need direct burial cable and a transformer to complete the project. Be sure if you go fluorescent to run individual wires to each light back to the transformer.

Long wire run

I want to install two post lamps about 300 feet from the transformer. I have a run of 8 ga. wire from the transformer out about 100 feet. Can I make this work adding a lower ga. wire for the remainder of the run? The lamps on the posts will be 25 wa. each.
Yes, you can certainly install 12 guage direct burial wire for the last 100 feet or so. I would however, order a multi-tap transformer that will allow you to raise the voltage as needed.

Lighting equipment needed?

I am planning a 110v system for my landscaping. what equipment would recommend to complete the project. I would like to use 5-8 of your Red Dot - Mushroom 7.5" Path Light - K811BR. and need a recommendation as to a good light to shine on the house (4-6) And additional equipment to complete the electrical wiring, (photo cell, wiring, switches etc).

That is a loaded question as we have many options for 120 volt landscape lighting equipment. I like the Red Dot fixtures you have selected and would use a grade level junction box for a clean look. Door Jamb Switch for Sliding Door
Hi, I am an architect for this high-end retail project in New York City and looking for a door jamb switch (or anything similar) for a sliding closet door. I have read your door switch products by Edward, but I don't know if it will work for sliding door. One reason is that when the door is not fully shut, the light will always on. Please kindly give me any recommendation on what kind of switches should I specified. Thank you!
There is not really a sliding door jamb switch that I am aware of. You might consider using a magnetic switch similar to what the alarm guys use or a ball switch and run it through a low voltage lighting contactor. This will allow you to control multiple doors from one power source.

Parking lot light problem
My company has a large outdoor parking area in which there are several light poles set up, which are connected to a light sensor. For a long time, everything worked great, but now the lights will power on, then go off, then power on, then go off, etc. Is this a bulb problem or is it a sensor problem or what? Please help!
Has someone worked on these lights or changed the photocell recently? If so, they have pointed the photocell towards the light or it is picking up a reflection from a building or structure. This will fool the sensor into thinking it is daylight and turn on and off. Be sure the photocell you have is pointed North and not being influnced by the commercial parking lot lighting problems mentioned above.

Uplighting Trees and Harsh Weather
Hello - Can you tell me what you recommend for uplighting two 20'foot trees (a very thin Pear tree--not fruit bearing and a Japanese Maple). The trees are on opposites of my yard and frame the front of the house. They are planted in flower/mulch beds. Please keep in mind that the Michigan weather is very harsh so I'll need something that can stand up to very cold winters. Also, I'm wondering if you can make a recommendation on the rest of the lighting if I provide you with a picture? Thanks, Jack
We are more than happy to assist you with a comprehensive landscape lighting design. Just send us some digital images from at least three angles and we will contact you with ideas and costs.
For the two trees, I would take a look at our low voltage lighting kits as a great place to start. They have everything you need to light the trees and the front of the house for that matter. We also have copper landscape lighting kits should you want to upgrade.
I would put two halogen 20 watt lights on each of your trees for balance and beauty. Start by setting up a test and experimenting with various locations before intalling the lighting and wires. That way you can have some fun and get the best look for your home. Pay attention to the shadows on the house created by the lights. This is how you create mood and ambiance. Check out these images in our gallery!

Xenon 120V Puck Light Fixtures

I would like to install 3 puck lights using 120v power to each light. Need wiring diagram

It is really quite simple to hook up 120 volt puck lighting fixtures. The cords and connectors come with the products dependingon the model or accessories you purchase. I recommend using a T-25 staple gun to attach the wires under the cabinet for a finished look. The four light 120 volt puck light kit comes with everything you need to install the lighting.

Garage light fixture with photocell

Looking for a garage light that will mount on an eave and is light sensitive i.e. goes on at night and off with daylight.

We have both motion activated lighting fixtures as well as exterior flood lights that will accept a photocell control. For the motion fixture, I would take a look at the RAB Motion Light. For the simple photocell version, take a look at the Remcraft 2062 with a button photocell option. You simply drill a small hole in the canopy for the photocell.

Front walk lighting
We are landscaping our front walkway up to our home which is a large, Italiante Victorian. We are wanting to add 4 light posts to our walk. I was looking at your Adjust-a-post brand lights but I can't figure out what I would need for a complete light post. I would like the 8' pole with the Victorian lamp top. I also would like the lights to have a sensor to come on at dusk and turn off at dawn. I also saw a component that could be added to make the post an outdoor electric outlet which I think would be handy. Please tell me all the parts I need to make a complete, working light pole.

Why don't you send a digital image of your home to the lighting designer. He can help select the appropriate decorative post light with automated controls. Are you also considering doing any low voltage landscape lighting as well?

baseball field lighting
looking into putting lights on the high school baseball feild. we were wondering how much it would be in a rough figure. the field is 220 to left and right feild and 240 to center
We have done several baseball and football fields fields recently. We would be happy to provide you a formal quote on a lighting package. I will have our lighting designer call to get a few more details before quoting the package. We have packages for those on a budget as well as commercial packages for larger facilities. Do you want use to illuminate just the field or the surrounding stands and parking?

Repair Shop Lighting
We plan on expanding our facility and are wondering what the best lighting option would be. Our ceiling will be at least 26' high and as much as 28'. We want the brightest light possible that will cast the least amount of shadows, and not be so hot that the technicians will feel like french fries. Also what would be the benefit if any of using 3-phase voltage lighting?
High bay lighting fixtures are your best bet for good quality shop lighting. I like the 400-watt metal halide commercial high bay lights for what you have described. We are happy to do a formal lighting design and build you a comprehensive lighting package. All our fixtures come with multi-tap ballasts which allow your electrician to select the correct operating voltage. Three phase power really only saves money on items that have motor loads like your air conditioner.

Puck Lights
I just purchased some xenon 3 puck lights and an appropriate voltage transformer (American Lighting). The installation instructions that are included with the puck lights show connection using a terminal block, but no terminal block was included either with the puck lights or the transformer. Is it necessary to use a terminal block? Thanks for your help.
It is not necessary to have the terminal block if you use small wire nuts to make the connections. Both are legal means of splicing the wiring!

flood lighting for business sign
I need to flood a big business sign, 30 ft wide, 6 ft high, the lights can be spread out from 8 to 15 ft away from the sign and aprox 1-2 ft lower than the sign, tilting up toward the sign. I would like to have it be white light vs yellow type light, 120 v, weather proof,......what do you suggest please?? thanks, Joe
Techlight's sign lighter would work perfect for this application. It would take about 4 fixtures to do the job, set back around 5-6 feet.

I have recently moved and my ceiling fan globes were broke in the process. I am looking for replacement globes, in particular 4 of the Concord Dark Amber Crackle glass globes. Can you let me know if they can be ordered and if so how much for 4 of them? Thanks Jennifer Hartl

AV Backlighting for Flat Panel Screen
Need some help. I am building an AV room and would like to install fluorescent back lighting (behind the flat panel screen) using a IR remote dimmer ballast. Light source needs to be 6500K with CRI as close to 98 as possible. I am thinking two recessed wall fixtures with a single 24" fluorescent tube in each. Can you tell me if this tube/fixture/IR ballast combination exists or recommend something that can do the job. Obviously I would like the lights set low profile on the wall and hidden behind a 50-52" plasma/LCD screen to the left and right of the wall mount.
Have you considered using LED rope lighting fixtures as a much easier solution? They will prevent interference that may be created by the ballast or lamp. You can still control these lights with a dimmer control using a Lutron Spacer RF or Lutron Radio Ra control.

Size of exterior Wall sconces
Are there guidelines to assist in selecting the size of front door exterior traditional carriage light wall sconce lamps? Two story traditional brick home -- exposed front door--no cover. When is 10 - 12" width 36" height appropriate vs 9.5"w x 20-24h? Also what is appropriate sizing for carriage lamps for 4.5' brick columns?

Selecting a decorative lantern for the front of your house can be a challenge. I like to suggest to my clients that they create a actual size cardboard template and perform a test. That way you can tape up the templates , stand back and select the appropriate size for the house. This is the fastest way to narrow your selection and confirm your decision.
Once you have a size in mind, we trust that you will come back and let us assist you with a decorative wall mount lantern selection. Thank you so much for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please do contact us at 1-800-239-2939 if you have any further questions.

motion lights alternate on and off.
I have 2 motion lights on the same switch. For the first few months they worked fine. Now, when I turn on the switch, both lights come on for about 30 seconds. Then they alternate coming on for 30 seconds. It is freaky. Any idea what is goin on?
That is a tough one to troubleshoot without being there. Sounds like you may have sustained a spike in voltage or a lightning strike which has damaged the unit(s). Try disconnecting them and testing them one at a time.

flourescent lamps in cold weather
I am installing 6 street lights in Northern MN. If I use flourescent lamps in the fixture will they work in the cold weather? Thanks, Forrest
All light bulbs and light fixtures, except incandescent types, are affected by extreme temperatures to some degree. Make sure that you are selecting a fluorescent fixture with a zero degree ballast so that it will operate in cold weather conditions.

Hot cable and lights don't work - HELP!
I installed a Malibu 600W Power Pack, 12 lights on a Carol Landscape lighting cable (Heavy Duty 12 Gauge). Because the outlet was in the back of the house and the lights are in front, I got a 100 ft cable. Install went fine, but when we hit the switch, only the first few lights went on, and they were very dim. I recut the connection to the transformer box and ensured a clean wire strip. I verified that the connection had 1/8th inch clearance from the wire insulation. Then I tried again, same thing. In the course of this, I knealt down and touched the cable and it was extremely hot to the touch. So I unplugged the transformer and started net searches on what I could be doing wrong. I can find no information around a hot cable when everything else looks okay. Except that the lights don't work and the cable is hot, of course. Suggestions?
You are experiencing classic voltage drop and high amperage isses caused by improper wire size. Although the transformer is big enough, the wiring is inadequate to handle the loads. Let's do the math to see why:
600W/12V = 50 amps!
12 guage wire is only rated for 20 amps. That is why you have turned your landscape wire into a temporary heating element. I would move the transformer and split the load into three home runs.
50A/3 = 16.67 amps!
Take a look at our handy "How To Design 12 Volt Lighting Systems" page for more information and solutions.

motion detectors
I want to place a string of low voltage lights down my driveway and have a motion detector at both the top and bottom of the driveway control the lights. Can you tell me what sensors are required and what the wiring schematic will be? Thank you Walt Emmett
For motion sensing look into the RAB Stealth 12LV for your application. This could work in between your transformer and lights. Or you could use a 120v version in between your power source and transformer.

Occupancy switches with dimmers
Can I use a dimmer wired after an occupancy switch?
Yes, you can use a dimmer control if installed after the occupany sensor. In other words, install the dimmer inline between the sesor and the light fixture. That will allow you to enjoy automated lighting with dimming features. That's a great idea!

Battery Operated Lamp

I'm looking for a battery operted lamp to go on a table behind a davenport. Traditional style would be nice.

Unforunately, I have been unable to locate a battery powered lamp to fit your request. House of Troy makes a nice battery operated piano lamp, and picture lamps, but not a "traditional style" table lamp that runs on batteries.

Two different voltages in one pipe
Can I run low voltage lighting wire (12 gauge) in the same conduit as 110 power? It would only be 6 feet under a concrete patio. Thanks.
High voltage power requires the use of a ground and of course low voltage power operates on a two conductor system without a ground. The experts do not want you to get the two confused which may result in electrocution or injury. However, if you clearly mark the wires and provide a divider inside the junction box to seperate the two voltages, it should be fine. If possible, it is always better to run individual conduits.

Door Jamb switch on closet
I just purchased a couple of Edwards EDW44 Door Jamb Switches from your online website and found and ordered a couple of White Rodgers 3TZ56 Fan Center Control with transformer/relay all mounted on a 4x4 junciton box lid at Grainger. I think I have what I need to install these devices in a couple of closets in my home. (By the way, your web site works quite nicely) The question is really about operation. I can wire these devices so that it operates in parallel to the light switch and either the light switch or the relay can turn on the light, or in series, so that the relay and switch need to be on to turn on the light, but either will shut it off. My may goal is to automate the turn on, so that the switch does not have to be used, so my inclination is to wire them in parallel. The advantage of the series connection is that I can actually shut off the power to the transformer and relay when the light switch is off. This is maybe safer, more ecological and ecomonical. What would be the usual practice for this type of arrangement? thanks, John
