would this fixture also work with a 400watt lamp?

NO, the ballast is designed for 1000 watt lamp.  This is true for any HID fixtures such as mercury vapor, metal halide, high pressure sodium and fluorescent.

You can either buy a new 400 watt sports light or change the ballast.
