MR8 Lamps
MR8 lamps are a type of
light bulb that has a multi-faceted reflector. The pressed glass reflector will have a thin layer of either aluminum or non-metallic film referred to as dielectric. The coating on the
MR8 lamp’s reflectors provides a faceted layer that the filament can refract light from. The result is a more concentrated beam of illumination compared to a traditional bulb. This type of lamp is available in different bulb sizes, including MR8 and 16.
Residential Landscape Lighting and Design offers a variety of
MR8 lamps, which provide a
low voltage alternative to traditional bulbs. These devices can be used both indoors and out in a variety of settings. The 8, simply refers to the size of the MR lamp. The bulbs are measured by finding the maximum diameter in eighth of an inch increment. Because these products are low voltage, they typically require a
transformer that will convert the wattage from the standard level.
When purchasing
MR8 lamps, there are several important things to keep in mind. Every bulb has its own average rated life. This refers to the length of time that the device will typically remain working. This could be anywhere from 8 months to 3 years, depending on the rating. These bulb ratings will be listed on an hourly basis, so an MR 8 lamp that last approximately 8 months would state 2000 hours. Of course lifespan isn’t the only consideration.
The correlated color temperature or CCT will determine, whether the
MR8 lamp appears cool or warm.
Bulbs with a rating below 3200K produce a warm reddish white color, while bulbs above 4000K will have a cool bluish white hue. The color rendering index or CRI is the affect that the bulb has on an objects natural appearance. The higher the value the more natural the item will appear. Over time the CRI amount will be reduced do to decomposition.
Beam spread is another important factor, when choosing the right
MR8 lamp for your requirement. Basically, the beam spread refers to the width of the light that is produced from the bulb. In
MR8 lamps, the spread is cone shaped. There spread is broken up into several fixture types. They are narrow, spot, flood, and narrow flood. The beam spread is commonly referred to for
outdoor lighting, however art illumination also focuses on this element.
