MR16 Lamps

The
MR16 lamp is a special type of bulb residents can use when going about their lighting design. "MR" means multifaceted reflector, and these bulbs have a pressed glass reflector inside. The interior or reflecting side of the bulb is comprised of facets and smothered with a reflective coating. The
MR16 lamp produces a highly concentrated light beam. Some
MR16 lamps have a smooth surface inside instead of the traditional facets, but are still labeled within the same category as their counterparts.

There are several different types of
bulbs residents can use in their lighting design. These include the
MR16,
MR11, and
MR8. The type of lamp you choose should be based on its size, wattage, and beam spread. These
reflector lamps have their own unique properties and differ from other types of bulbs. We will talk about the
MR16 in this section.
MR16 lamps have a halogen filament capsule with either a dichroic or aluminum reflective coating. The dichroic coating is thin and has several layers of non-metallic film. Infrared heat produced by the interior filament passes directly through the reflector. As this process is taking place, visible light is reflected forward. Aluminum coatings differ slightly from dichroic coatings. The aluminum coating in these lamps reflects both infrared and visible light. Some of these bulbs have a special cover glass located near the front end of the reflector. This cover provides extra safety for the user in case the bulb breaks.
The 16 lamp comes in several different sizes for your convenience. This size is determined by the length of the bulb measured in 1/8 “ increments. The
MR16 lamp is sixteen eighths of an inch or 2 “ in total diameter. Residents will typically find that MR16 bulbs function at wattages below 120 volts (most operate efficiently with 12 volts). Other MR16 lamps can adequately perform with 6 or 24-volt options.
Transformers are usually required to reduce the line voltage for these lamps. These bulbs can also be dimmed if you buy a commercial dimmer.
Beam spread is very important when it comes to your lighting design. Some residents may prefer a
narrow beam spread, while others need a wider beam spread over the objects they are trying to highlight. RLLD has
lenses and louvers to compensate for increases or decreases in beam spread. For a tight or narrow beam spread you may want to purchase a
20MR16EZX bulb or an
MR16/EZY lamp for your design. We also have beautiful
color lenses that will give your surroundings a touch of dazzling wonder. These come in red, blue, yellow, green, and golden amber. RLLD also has
color correction lenses that will give your space a warm, incandescent coloring. Residents can also benefit from our
UV (ultra-violet) lenses, which are perfect for pictures and paintings. These lenses give homeowners the extra protection they require for their fine art lighting theme. Come check out our wonderful online selection today and get your illumination design theme started off on the right foot!
