We have a small back yard and have put up about 12 lights for landscaping. We would like to put in more but do not know what kind of transformer we need. We are not electricians. We are planning to put in about 20 to 30 lights to accent our back yard. We also have a pond back there that we would like to light up. We have several saints and some beautiful trees that we would like to have accented. We would like to have brighter lights on the saints for a few hours. Now these lights we have sometimes do not work because we think there is too much light on the transformer. The box says we can put 2 twenty watt lights etc. So we now have 12 5 watt lights. Which we think is too much. We also have a transformer that is mounted on the side of the house. It is a 75 watt transformer. Can that be used for what we want and if not, what do you recommend as far as the transformer strength and what size wire do you recommend we use?

The transformer you have is very small and should be replaced with a higher wattage model. I would recommend that you purchase one of our prepackaged low voltage lighting kits for the new lights you are adding in the back yard.  It comes with all the fixtures, stakes, lamps, wire and transformer to accomplish your goals.  As far as wire, I would use 12/2 or 10/2 cable throughout your system.
