I'm trying to decide on lighting in a new house. I want to use recessed lighting in the kitchen and for accenting art in the great room area as well as illuminating the foyer. Should I be using low voltage or is less expensive line voltage good enough? I'm not clear on the factors I should be considering. Thanks for any assistance.

The main advantage to low voltage recessed lighting is size of fixture aperature, light control and lamp selection.  If you are planning on accenting each painting individually, this is the way to go.  We have lamps in many wattages and beam spreads from 9 to 55 degrees.  My favorite fixture is the Halo H1499 housing with a Halo1420P trim.  It is small, adjustable and affordable. If you are washing the wall I would recommend going with a eyeball or wall washer with a halogen lamp.  I always use incandescent lighting for general lighting because of the soft warm color and halogen for lighting art or objects.  The combination of the two sources with Lutron dimmer controls are perfect for mood lighting. Call if you need additional help with your design!
