light for stairs

How do I light carpeted stairs with a brick wall on one side, the other side open with wood railing? Ceiling is 12 feet halfway up stairs. I tried a can over the halfway point, but the light is too harsh and shadowy. Now I think two sconces would work better but I don't want to pull wire through the brick wall. I'm also thinking a series of low voltage lights set into stair risers, or rope lighting at base of the railing. What do you think?

Rope lighting is a simple installation which works well to line the stairs. I recommend surface mount step lights SL-07 for the best lighting results.
