landscaping lights - voltage drop

I am planning my landscape lighting and am concerned about voltage drop. Distance from the transformed to the end of the run(s) will be ~160’. I intend to install 521 watts of lights (5@25 watt; 11@36 watts). Question – should I purchase a 600 watt high voltage transformer and run a continuous loop (approximately 320’ total) or purchase a 600 watt transformer (300 watts X 2) and make 2 runs of approximately 160’ each? In either case should I purchase a multi tap transformer to insure I can adjust for any drop? For the wattage and distance, would you recommend 8/2 wire in either case? Thanks – great web site and very helpful. Recommendation on a transformer appreciated!

I would recommend that you purchase a Focus High Voltage transformer with multiple taps.  Using 8/2 will certainly help you overcome your voltage drop on the long runs and you can drop back to 10/2 on the shorter runs.  I would split the load into four equal home run circuits from the lights back to the transformer.  This will allow you to adjust the voltage and maintain uniformity of the lights.  FYI - I would install the system without burying the wires until you have it properly balanced and you are satisfied.  Good Luck!
