I am a 5th year architectural engineering student at Penn State and have a question regarding landscape lighting. I am redesigning the Dick's Sporting Goods Headquarters building for my thesis study. The site is under restrction due to its proximity to an international airport. The buiding facade is illuminated with the throw of the beam hitting the building. All exterior fixtures are supposed to be cased and have louvers throwing the light outward and downward. I'm looking to illuminate Red Maples and River Birch trees. Is it possible to still uplight the red maples in the summer? I was trying to limit downlighting the trees because of the addedmaintainence issues with tree growth, tree trimming, birdnests, ect. Is this the only other tree lighting option? Any direction is welcome. Thank you. Tim Jones more information on my thes is study can be viewed at www.arche.psu.edu/thesis/2004/trj111

Good luck on your thesis paper!  I am not familiar with FAA regulations regarding lighting near or around the airport.   We have special louvers that we use on up lights to prevent stray light and glare.  Click here to see the louvers.  Hope that helps!
