I am in the process of choosing lights for my 6X8 bathroom (remodel). My decorator suggest 4-4 inch recessed lights and 3 hockey puck lights under the 9 inch deep soffit which goes over the vanity (38 inches long). When I went to a lighting store, they told me that the puck lights would not be good for putting on make up, etc. (shadows on the face, etc.) My electrician says something else. In the meantime, I''m trying to find something that can recess into the soffit (can''t really be seen), that will provide adequate light for bathroom type tasks (in the mirror). Any suggestions? Thanks.
I like using LIGHTOLIER 1003R/1005WH 85-watt recessed lights over vanities. I would use three lights with a DIMMER CONTROL for fine tuning.
Have you considered using SCONCES mounted on the mirror for shadow free frontal lighting?
You could do both and I would recommend using two dimmer controls.

Hi. I would like to install low voltage recessed lighting in the lower level of our home while we remodel. I have been unable to find anything that discussed the pros and cons of using remote transformers vs lights with individual transformers. The ceilings are insulated, and I would prefer to use retrofit fixtures vs new construction.
It is much easier to use a RETROFIT LOW VOLTAGE FIXTURE that has a magnetic transformer attached to the fixture. That way you do not have to worry about sizing the transformer, the wiring or problems with voltage drop. We have a great selection of RESIDENTIAL LIGHTING FIXTURES that can be used during your remodel project. My favorite for art lighting is the HALO H1499RT/1420P MR16 FIXTURE It is easy to install and adjust! The best angle for lighting art is between 34 and 45 degrees.
For general lighting of the room, I would stick with a standard incandescent recessed light. The 6" LIGHTOLIER 1003R/1005 is a great light for overall lighting. On a eight foot ceiling you would space them about 6-8'' apart for even coverage.

I am looking for 10-14 not too expensive halo or lightolier recessed cans (low voltage) to light paintings on walls. Ceilings 12 - 14 ft. recommendations??
Well, my favorite all time inexpensive low voltage accent light is the Halo H1499RT/1420P. This fixture is very easy to install and handles up to a 50-watt MR16 lamp. The small slotted aperature does a great job of minimizing glare without restricting the light. For large paintings you can use two lights mounted at oblique angles to overlap the light. To finish of the job, you will need a dimmer control to set the mood. I would use a Lutron "Diva" dimmer designed for low voltage lighting.
