Low voltage outdoor landscape lighting kits make it easy and fun to install a lighting system.

I am building a home and want to have 2 areas for low voltage lighting. A front yard set with about 10-12 lights and then the backyard would have about 20 at tops. Please recommend what I would need to buy as far as transformers and wire. Thanks, Aaron

The best buy we have on low voltage lighting is our LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS. They come with everything you need to illuminate your front and back yard. The transformers are sized for extra capacity should you decide to add more LOW VOLTAGE BBQ LIGHTS or LOW VOLTAGE PATH LIGHTS.

Check out our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS information page for wiring and installation ideas and recommendations.

Thanks so much for visiting our lighting website. Everyone here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design is looking forward to assisting you with your landscape lighting project. Give us a call at 800-239-2939 if we can be of further assistance.

1/2" threaded stems are typical for low voltage lighting equipment.

Hi, Can this item be mounted on to Intermatic low voltage power stake? What is the size of the thread mount? Thanks

Focus Lighting - Low Voltage Landscape Lighting - SL-03-ACNo, this light is designed to sit on the ground or be partially buried for a custom look. The FOCUS SL-03-AC is considered a grade level light and not a stake mounted light. If you want a stake mounted MR16 light light take a look at the FOCUS SL-02. It has a 1/2" threaded stem that will mount to any landsape mounting stake.

Outdoor landscape lighting for trees and shrubs using mercury vapor lighting fixtures.

I need to select 3 large uplights for oaks trees and 6 small uplights for specimin trees i also need 3 lights to wash the front and side of a house. My wife does not want to see the fixtures She does not want to be able to see where the light comes from what would you recommend

Hiding the light source will take careful consideration and testing on your part to acheive the desired results. Up lighting large Oak trees can be done with several types of equipment depending on the mounting technique you use. For example, a one or more MERCURY VAPOR GRADE LEVEL UP LIGHTS positioned in the lawn, midway between the truck and the drip line, will do a beautiful job of lighting the canopy of the tree. If your tree is surrounded by shrubs, the best way to up light the tree is MERCURY VAPOR BULLET UP LIGHTS with the hub mount option or with remote ballasts. Install the lights just below the top of the shrubs and theat will minimize a glow spot from the fixture. You can also use MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHTS mounted in the top of the tree to create shadows and interest on the ground.

Check out our LIGHTING GALLERY for some ideas!

For the specimen trees, you might consider using one of our PRE-PACKAGES LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS. Everything you need including the fixtures, stakes, lamps, wire and transformer are in the box. I like the MR16 for the trees and the PAR36 for the house. We also have GRADE LEVEL LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTS if that fits your needs better.

Pipe threads for landscape lighting are NPS as compared to NPT threads for pressurized applications.

What is the difference between n.p.s. threads and n.p.t. ? Are there adapters to change from 1/2 inch male nps to 1/2 inch female npt. Help !!!! I''m trying to retrofit fixtures for a driveway project. Thanks in advance.

NPS threads are straight pipe threads that when assembled with other NPS threaded components will provide free and loose mechanical joints without pressure tightness. NPT threads are tapered pipe threads that when assembles with other NPT components and a sealer will produce a pressure tight joint.

Most of the LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FIXTURES we sell have NPS threads. You can use a standard pipe thread compound on NPS threads to prevent water from getting into the fixtures or junction boxes.

Where do I begin when selecting outdoor home lighting fixtures?

That's a hard one to answer. First, I would break the fixtures into categories of lights and narrow my selections. Here are the basic categories of on our web site:

What's the best way to light up the front of an old barn that I have turned into a bar?

There are many ways that you can attractively illuminate your building with good lighting.

If you have landscaping, it is always nice to include some LANDSCAPE LIGHTING to enhance your investment and cast shadows on the front of the building. We have some pre packaged LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS that are priced well and have everything you need to install the system.

You could also install some GOOSENECK LIGHTS on the front of the building to illuminate the sidewalk or to highlight architectural elements of the structure. These lights are the ones like they used at gas stations when you grew up as a kid.

If you want to discuss the project in more detail, contact one of the LIGHTING DESIGNERS at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design at 800-239-2939 for assistance.

PVC Pipe & Using PVC Conduit In Conjunction With U/F Cable

Hi - I am installing outdoor lighting on top of 5 columns I've constructed within a retaining wall. The total run from power source to last light is 130 feet with a few curves and 90 degree turns in between the columns. From the power source to the first column, (30 feet) the land is low and prone to flooding in the winter & spring. Also, there is a tremendous slab of concrete buried less than a foot under grade in this low spot (original, incorrectly placed foundation for house)."CAN" I run UF #12 INSIDE sched. 40 conduit or will this cause it to overheat in the summer?? Also, From the first column forward, can I run the UF wire attached to the back of the retaining wall 18 inches down (wall is 12 inches thick)? Or should I use conduit all along the course? The wire will be sitting in drainage gravel behind the wall. Lastly, I want three lights on one dimmer switch, and two on a separate dimmer. Should I use three wire or run two separate courses of two wire? Thank you so much for your time!

It is perfectly fine to install U/F CABLE inside PVC conduit. Officially, both PVC or U/F cable should be buried at least 18" to comply with NEC regulations whenever possible. If you want to control your lights seperately it will necessary to install a three wire sytem with a ground or two 14/2 U/F CABLES. I would use at least 3/4" or 1" PVC to make the installation easier. You can use liquid dish soap as a pulling lubricant. If you need any lights, you might check out our full selection of LANDSCAPE LIGHTING PRODUCTS.

Outdoor low voltage dimmers

Is there any way to include a dimmer in an outdoor low voltage lighting system? I am currently planning on a system with 12V Focus copper landscape lights and a stainless steel or fiberglass transformer.

Use a low-voltage magnetic dimmer by Lutron. This dimmer is placed on the 120V side of the transformer.
