I am replacing a garden lighting fixture. the old fixture had a white, a black, and a copper ground. i purchased a new fixture that requires a 12v transformer. do i need this? the new fixture does not a a white, black, and ground. it just has 2 wires. which one do i connect the black to and white? what do i do with the ground wire?

Let’s assume that this is the only LANDSCAPE LIGHT in your yard.  First, I would find where the 120 volt power exits the house and install a 12 VOLT TRANSFORMER supplying power to the fixture the fixture.  You can also mount the transformer near the fixture if that is more convenient. 

 

Now that you have converted to a 12 volt system, the colors of the wire become basically insignificant.  Connect one wire to the white and the other to the black.  You can disregard the green wire.  For safety sake, please turn off the circuit to the outside light before getting started.
