You have a many options for lighting the back yard.  The first idea is to use mercury vapor down lights mounted high in the trees for moonlighting.  It is soft, energy efficient and just looks good.  This is the most expensive and the most attactive approach.

Secondly, you could go with one of more halogen lights mounted either on the house or in the trees for area lighting.

Thirdly, you could go with some bullet flood lights mounted on the house as a good low cost solution.  You can even install a photocell control on all of these lights to automate them from dusk to dawn.
