The big difference is the color of the light, heat generated and the ability to control the lights with a dimmer.  Xenon produces a white colored light and incandscent is slightly warmer in color.  Both of these sources can be dimmed for mood lighting and generate heat (BTU's) equivalent to the total wattage.  Fluorescent lights have a higher lumen output, less heat and cannot be dimmed without expensive special components.  They have a longer lamps life and are available in color temperatures of 5000K, 3500K, 3000K and 2700K.  The higher the Kelvin temperature the whiter the light.  Hope that helps!
