I just replaced an incandescent chandelier and regular dimmer. The new fixture consists of 20 X 20W halogen 12V G4 bi-pin or 400W total. I was TOLD that the new fixture requires a magnetic dimmer. I tried a lutron skylark magnetic dimmer(slv-600), but the chandelier buzzed except when on maximum brightness. Next I tried a maestro model magnetic(malv-1000) in case greater wattage capacity might help, but it didn't and produced no change at all. My original incandescent chandelier and regular dimmer were silent. Might I try a regular dimmer with this fixture in case I was given faulty information about needing a magnetic dimmer? I wouldn't want to risk a dangerous situation or ruin the fixture if it needs the magnetic. What would happen if I tried using a regular dimmer with a fixture that requires a magnetic dimmer? Or could a different bulb type or brand possibly help? The current bulbs are halogen osram made in germany(bi-pin 20W G4). Or would a debuzzing coil possibly help my situation? If yes, where and how is it installed? The noise definitely comes from the chandlier not the dimmer. Any help you might offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks. eric

I would verfiy that you have a magnetic transformer and not an electronic transformer in the fixture.  If you do have an electronic transformer, you will need a dimmer designed for electronic loads.  Unfortunately, they are rated for 300 watts maximum.  The magnetic style dimmer should have solved the problem.

A Lutron debuzzing coil would definately help the situation.  The coil would be installed inline between the dimmer and the fixture.  If you decide to go that route contact customer service to discuss your situation at 800-239-2939.
