There are several 20ft trees which I would like to uplight. I am happy to get a very soft and minimal glow, particularly since I want to optimize the use of my 300wt 12volt transformer. What would be your recommendation of lighting medium and what wattage would do the job. How do I crank in the length of cabling into my calculation (my transformer offers 11,12, and 13 volt terminals)

I would recommend that you use 35 watt MR16 or 36 watt PAR36 halogen lamps to up light your trees.  I would put not more that 100 watts on 100 foot of 12/2 cable as a rule of thumb or three fixtures per tree.  If you have 10/2 cable you can up the length and wattage by two without a voltage drop.  If you have plenty of wire, you can always run a continuous loop and feed it from both ends.  If we can help you with lamps, MR16 fixtures, PAR36 fixtures or wire please click on one of the highlighted links.
