I have open ceilings now and a great chance to install some lights for our art pieces. Is there some rule of thumb for placement of lights? That is, angles, number of lights. ect.?

A 45 degree angle is always a good starting point for illuminating art.  However, this will change if your art is installed above eye level due to glare or perhaps a frame shadow.  I like to use Halo H14499T/1420P MR16 accent lights due to there low cost and flexibility.  MR16 lamps come in several wattages and many beam patterns which allow you to focus the light right on the subject matter instead of the wall.  The number of lights depends on the size of the light and whether you want to light each piece of flood the wall.  Anything over 5 feet wide you should consider using two lights.  The best way is to purchase the lights and test before you mount them.  They come 12 to the case.  Good Luck!
