Rope lighting

I reviewed your FAQ's regarding indoor step lighting and found it extremely useful so first off, thank you. Now, I am thinking about the low voltage rope light to light approximately 13 steps. I was only curious if there is a way to switch or connect a motion detector to the rope light (at the top and bottom of the stairway)since I may not want the light on all the time and only when in use to go downstairs. I was thinking about the step lights and found they are generally cased outdoor lights and the rope light may be my way of lighting the steps. Also, my builder does not personally light through carpet (mounting cased lights through carpeting). Would a rope light produce any hazards if they are mounted to carpeting at the edges (such as fire hazards) or should they be mounted more on the wall above carpeting? Thank you for your time. Mike.

Using ROPE LIGHTING on stairways is a very effective form of accent and safety lighting especially when the light source is concealed from normal view angles.  There is not enough heat generated to be a fire hazard.  The problem lies in making splices that are enclosed in a junction box which is hard to do on stairs  If you have access to a closet or storage under the stairs it can be done safely.  I would use our ROPE LIGHT MOUNTING TRACK or MOUNTING CLIPS to support the rope lights.  You can use a MOTION SENSOR or DIMMER CONTROL in lieu of a switch.  If you decide to purchase the rope lighting from us, and we hope you do, please order the pearl white option for better results.  Thanks!
