my entire house has exposed beams running through it. the living room is especially hard to keep lit at night, becasue of all the windows, as well as the light radius being blocked by beams. right now i am just using torchieres, but it's a pain to walk around and turn off 5 lights when i'm ready for bed! any suggestions? mounted lights on the beams seems strange.

Well, since you have the torchieres, you might want to consider installing a DIMMER SWITCH to control the lighting circuit. This can be done with standard wall box dimmer or a LUTRON RADIO RA system.  Lutron Radio Ra allows you to automate a lighting system without the need of rewiring the house.  It's very cool!
