I have an 8 foot overhead lighting fixture and am trying to figure out the best place to locate it over a drafting table (7' ceiling). At this point I'm thinking just above the front edge so I don't get cast shadows from my hand and don't see it directly with my eyes. Any guidelines on this sort of light placement?

I like you idea of placing the light just above the edge of the table.  fluorescent lights because they use frosted lamps are very good at not producing harse shadows.  If you were using a clear light bulb for example, the shadows would be sharp and very distracting on the work surface.
