Recessed Lighting for my living room

Can you give some guidance on the type of products that would be best for adding recessed lighting to my family room which is 23'x 13' and paneled with red oak paneling. So it is sort of a dark, cozy room, (beige cieling) dark leather furniture, large picture window at one end. I would like the option of highlighting space over the fireplace mantle and a large picture over the couch--but I'm not sure I like the look of the "eye-ball" recessed lights, are there other options. What about the "gimbal"? And what makes the "wall washer" different from these other options? Could you recommend number of lights needed, spacing, distance from the wall? Thanks for you help!!

I would install two rows of four Lightolier 1102P!/1105 120-watt BR40 recessed down lights for general lighting.  Then, I would install Lightolier 2000LV/2006 50-watt MR16 accent lights for the artwork and fireplace.  Both should be on individual dimmer controls for setting the mood.

I really don''t care for eyeball fixtures myself.
