Can I use this in my unfinished basement? Is a wall pack the same as a flood light? What is the shield option?

I would not use this particular wall pack light in the house due to the lamp type.  You will be more happy with a fixture that is instant on and off like a fluorescent wall pack.  Metal halide lamps as well as other HID light sources require a start up and restrike time.  This does not make them good when using in combination with wall switches.
