what does the #R20 mean on a recessed flood lamp bulb?. My lighting recommends this but I find that the bulb sticks out of the face of the fixture.

The "R" stands for reflector shape and the "20" stands for the diameter or size of the glass envelope.  If the R20 light bulb sticks out of your fixture you might check to see if the housing has an adjustable bracket which would allow you to change the position.  If not, you can try an alternative lamp such as a 50PAR20 or a 55PAR16.  Both of these lamps are shorter by design and should fit in your fixture.  Keep in mind, that these light bulbs are both halogen light sources which produce a white colored light as apposed to the yellowish tint of the incandescent lamp..
