Voltage on dimmers switches vs bulb wattage

I have a 400 watt dimmer switch and 4 x 50 halo lights bulbs which works fine. If I wanted to get 6 x 50 watt halo bulbs, would it still work on a 400W dimmer. I have been told that the dimmer must be 2x the bulb total wattage. Is this correct ?

I would have to know the manufacturer and part number of the dimmer to properly answer your question.  I am not aware of any two times rule.
