Are there some rules of thumb about how frequently lights should be placed?

Most quality low voltage path lights are between 12" and 18" in height.  A 12" pathlight spreads roughly 4' to 6' in diameter and an 18" path light spreads roughly 6' to 10' depending on the hood of the fixture.  I like to create individual pools of light by following these guidlines and alternating the fixtures from side to side for a more attractive look.
