I will be installing a putting green approx. 17' x 35' and would like to provide enough lighting for night play with low voltage landscape lighting. Is this possible by placing lights around the perimeter? How many and what wattage do I need?

It is best to light a putting green with down lights from trees or the house to minimize shadows.  If that is not possible, a series of ground mount lights is certainly your best choice.  I would suggest a handsome copper path light that is well shielded and gives a nice distribution of light such as a Techlight TLSCPL.  I would think eight lights equally spaced around the putting green would be very nice.  We also have transformers and wire to complete the system.
