Landscape lighting timer

I am in need of a somewhat powerful timer that can put out a low voltage current for about 20-23 lamps at 20W a piece to be hooked up to a standard 120v plug. So intuitively I think I may need something along the lines of a 250 watt outdoow timer. Presently I am running a 150 watt one that is being run extremely hot and is drained quite a bit by the end of the line....meaning the lights are getting enough juice. My question therein lies within the semantics of the language as I don't understand what the difference bewteen a timer and a transformer is, not to mention which would be better suited for my need. Please advise me of what I may want to take a look at. Thank you for your time.Eric Foster

You have two problems with your current lighting set up.  First you have approximately 460 watts of lights on a 150 watt transformer.  That is not good!   Secondly, if you have all the lights on one cable you are experiencing a voltage drop problem.  I would purchase one of our 500 watt power transformers with a built in timer and some 12/2 landscape cable to split up the load.  I like to put no more than 200-watts on each cable if the run is under 50 feet.  If you are going over 100 feet I would drop the wattage to 100 per run.  If you are using or 14 gauge wire cut those recommendations in half!
