I'd like to install recessed stair lights in the wood stairs going to my front door. The stairs are in an "L" shape. There are 6 steps leading to an intermediate landing which turns and goes up 5 more steps to the front porch. How many lights do I need? Should they be positioned on every step? On both sides? That's quite a few lights!

Technically, you should have one or more step lights on each step to eliminate shaddows.  If you have a sidewall that will accept lights, you might consider mounting the lights there.  That way you will have fewer lights.
