I have a 240' long driveway that I'd like to line with low-voltage lights, but after reading thru some of the archive about voltage drop, etc, it appears I can't just put 1 transformer at the house and run a single wire down the side of the driveway. Would it make sense to have 110volt service installed in the area and run multiple sets of lights or is there a better/more cost effective way? Thanks.

Well thats a good question.  Whether you go low voltage or line voltage, you still have to dit a ditch and install the wiring.  UF CABLE or LOW VOLTAGE WIRE or PVC conduit should be buried 18" to meet National Electrical Requirments.  Rigid conduit, on the other had only has a 6" requirment.  So let's look at our options.

If you go line voltage or 120 volt, you can install a variety or PAGODA LIGHTS or PATH LIGHTS without the worry of voltage issues, provided you use #12 or #10 wire.

If you go low voltage or 12 volt, you will have to use a MULT-TAP TRANSFORMER, home run wiring and #10/2 or #8/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE to overcome voltage drop issues.  Click here to CALCULATE WIRE SIZES and to learn more about DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS.  We have many PATH LIGHTS to choose from.
