Every sport played at night requires light, and basketball is no exception. Even though professional basketball is an indoor game, almost every public park in America has an outdoor court for young and old alike. Often times games on these courts run well into the night, long after dark, and
sport lights are a necessity for two reasons. The first is obvious. Players need to see well enough to play the game safely, and to make their shots. The second reason is protection. After dark, criminal activity will often rise in the neighborhood surrounding the park, and
bright sports lights around the court will serve as both a deterrent and as an aid to observation that helps players and spectators see who might be approaching.
Basketball courts in parks vary in size depending upon the size of the park itself and the enthusiasm that park patrons have for basketball. Smaller parks often offer only a half-size court, and many municipalities mistakenly assume that a standard parking lot light near the court is all that lighting requires. This is not the case.
Parking lot lights are designed to distribute light in a different environment, and to diffuse it in a different way. Sports lights, on the other hand, are designed to specifically shine light in more concentrated amounts on playing areas and to create a field of brighter, more "compact" light in which to play the game.
