Help me figure out which dimmer switch to use!

I recently purchased some very nice looking pendant lights at my local home improvement center. They came with a funny looking round transformer in the canopy bar. Do I need any special dimmer for these decorative lights? The salesman had no clue what I needed!

Sounds like your fixture came supplied with a round toroidal transformer. This is a magnetic transformer and does require that you use a Lutron dimmer control designed for inductive or magnetic loads. Failure to use the right dimmer switch will most certainly fail in no time.

On the other hand, if your fixture had come with a small rectangular electronic transformer, you would also have to use a special Lutron dimmer designed specifically for electronic loads. These little transformers are very finicky and will flicker and buzz if not dimmed properly. Trust me!

I hope that answers your lighting questions and next time you will call us before the other guys. If you need anything else call us toll free at 800-239-2939. We are all about setting the mood and making lighting work for you!

Low voltage lighting transformers for indoor use.

I am looking for a Landscape Transformer which can be installed indoors. Specifically, a 200-watt or 300 watt model.

Most landscape lighting transformers are not UL rated for use indoors. Electrical inspectors do not want to see low voltage wiring running through the wall without a sleeve or conduit as it could be a fire hazard.

We do have several UL approved indoor low voltage transformers that have secondary fusing. They are magnetic and electronic depending on your needs. The electronic transformers are only rated for 150-watts where the magnetic transformers go up to 1000-watts.

Lighting fixtures for basketball and volleyball courts.

We have a 40' x 70' basketball court & 35' x 55' sand volleyball court separately, what light system is needed to light each court and what is the optimal mounting height for the lights?

We have several sport court lighting kits designed for just these type of applications. Our pre-packaged half-court lighting kit is designed for recreational use with professional results. If you send us a drawing of your two court layout, we can design a custom package that fits your budget. Depending on the location of your two courts, it might be possible to utilizes a common pole and keep the cost down.

Should you have existing wood poles, we also have a series of brackets and fixtures designed for outdoor sport lighting projects.

Lighting a grove of trees around a pool area.

Our house is located on 3 acres next to a state park. We have a grove of beautiful locust trees (60-70 ft high) in our pool area. We would like to be able to up light them so that we could see the delicate branches at the top on special occasions. We am not sure what kind of lights we need and also want to know what types are the most energy efficient.

Sounds like you home is located in a great area. I would use one or more 175-watt mercury vapor flood lights with three sided glare shields. The lights are fairly large and you will need to hide them in some foliage or even mount them on the back side of the tree. These energy efficient HID lights are strong enough to dramatically illuminate the Locust trees and the shields minimize glare from the fixtures. Should you decide to use these lights more often than special occasions, I would suggest using a timer control. I would hook these up and experiment with the best aiming angle and location before installing the wiring.

Please help me with some low voltage landscape lighting!

I am in the process of purchasing a new home. My wife and I are interesting in doing some simple outdoor landscape lighting in the front of the house. Since the home is new, and the plants are small, can you make a suggestion?

Our outdoor lighting kits would be perfect for your new home. They are designed to allow for flexibility and expansion as the plants mature.

I like the MR16 landscape lighting kit because it has more lamping options and flexibility than some of the other fixture types we offer. It also has extra transformer capacity to add path lights or address marker lights if you so desire in the future.

If you have any questions or just want to talk about outdoor landscape lighting, we would be glad to help! We are passionate about our lighting and look forward to serving you! Call us tollfree at 800-239-2939 or contact us online.
