I am looking for a motion control for my security lights

I am tired of going behind my wife to turn off the security flood lights. Do you have any motion sensors that a fairly handy guy can install without calling an electrician? We are on a fixed income and I would really like to solve this problem in the least expensive way.

We have many motion detectors and timers that will solve your security lighting problem. Before doing anything, be sure to turn off the circuit breaker before attempting to install the motion sensor device. I would hate for anything to happen to you.

My favorite motion sensor is the "Goodnight" Tuff Dome from Rab. It has a built in photocell and dimmer control to help extend lamp life and provide a good security lighting solution. Your other options are to replace the existing floods with a package motion kit.

Why don't you contact us or give us a call toll free at 800-239-2939 if those don't meet your requirements and we will pick something else.

Thanks for checking with us and we hope to earn your lighting business!

What is the best landscape light to use near the coast?

I am in the process of redoing my landscaping and wanted to add some low voltage lighting. We live near the coast and I am concerned about salt air and corrosion. Can you please suggest a fixture that will do well in these conditions? I have several Queen Palm trees and other Date Palms to illuminate across the front of my house.

The best low voltage lighting fixtures to use along the coast are copper fixtures or composite fixtures. These small, yet powerful low voltage accent lights are perfect for illuminate small and large Palm trees. Depending on the viewing angle, I would use two or three lights per tree for a spectacular result. The 35-watt MR16 flood lamp option is a good lamp choice due to long lamp life and beam spread in the copper up light fixture. Have you considered using copper path lights near the front door or along the sidewalk? These can be very handy for illuminating the walk and surrounding plant materials. They provide not only a handsome light source but, they provide safety for family and friends.

To finish off the system I would order a low voltage transformer that has a stainless steel or fiberglass enclosure. They come with timer, photocell and dimming options depending on the manufacturer you select. My favorite is from Focus Industries. They simply make a great product!

Locating low voltatge transformers in outdoor soffits.

What do I need to meet code to mount the lighting transformer and dimmer in a soffit? Instructions for some transformers say they should not be soffit mounted.

Your best bet is to locate the
low voltage transformer in the attic where it is readable accessible and can dissipate the heat. It is always best to have access to the secondary fuses in the event of a short circuit.

Magnetic transformers by nature generate heat and require roughly 3” of free air clearance around the unit for cooling purposes. Electronic transformers however, create less heat and may be installed in junction boxes recessed into the soffit near the light fixtures, if you so desire.

Have you considered using a small 120-volt soffit lighting fixture? These MR16 lights are small, easy to install and dim with a standard dimmer control.
