Locating low voltatge transformers in outdoor soffits.
What do I need to meet code to mount the lighting transformer and dimmer in a soffit? Instructions for some transformers say they should not be soffit mounted.Your best bet is to locate the low voltage transformer in the attic where it is readable accessible and can dissipate the heat. It is always best to have access to the secondary fuses in the event of a short circuit.
Magnetic transformers by nature generate heat and require roughly 3” of free air clearance around the unit for cooling purposes. Electronic transformers however, create less heat and may be installed in junction boxes recessed into the soffit near the light fixtures, if you so desire.
Have you considered using a small 120-volt soffit lighting fixture? These MR16 lights are small, easy to install and dim with a standard dimmer control.
