Please help me figure out the best way to light my horse arena.

If I were to install one of these arena lights. How large of a concrete base do I need to make in order for the light to be stable? I'm looking for estimates as far as amount of concrete above ground, below ground, and diameter wide of the concrete necessary. Thanks, hope to hear from you soon.

We cannot give you specific requirements due to variations in soil conditions, wind zones and legal issues for arena light footings. However, I would contact customer service and ask about our direct burial poles which do not require footings. Makes things much easier. 800-239-2939.

Focus lighting fixtures are an excellent choice for illuminating a colonial home.

I want to up light my brick two story colonial. My plan uses 10 well lights. I plan to use 35w halogens. Do I use flood or spot bulbs. I planned on getting the focus well light $35. I live in Iowa, is there any reason to buy a more expensive well light? Angled vs flat? They will be in a flower bed. Finally I planned on the focus 900w transformer with 10 gauge wire. Unless you have a better or different one to suggest. Thank you.

I would go with the flood lamps and purchase your FOCUS TRANSFORMER with a built-in dimmer control. That way you can fine tune the intensity to just the right amount for your taste.

Unless you have a specific need for WELL LIGHTS you should consider a STAKE MOUNTED FOCUS LIGHT FIXTURE fixture They are easier to move around, adjust and relocate as the plant material matures or your needs change.

Xenon undercabinet lighting for kitchens and other work areas.

How do I know which length Xenon undercabinet light fixture(s) to order for my kitchen? What about the corner with an angled corner cabinet? Do I need a hardwire box for the hardwire fixtures? If so, do I need one for each fixture or just one for each group?

The main goal for good task lighting is to try for uniform light distribution on the work surface. So, you try and use the largest XENON LIGHT FIXTURES you can to fit the cabinets. We have link cables to connect the fixtures form one to the other for retrofit applications. If you are starting from scratch, I would consider using the hard wire fixtures.

Troubleshooting an Intermatic and/or Tork mechanical time clock.

I've installed a timer in-line between an 110V outdoor receptacle and my swimming pool pump receptacle to timer...Black to "L" white to "1" green to ground Pump to timer...black to "X" white to "2" green to ground I have confirmed successful electrical service to the pump but the timer is not working. Is is possible that I have the timer wired incorrectly?

Check to see that the white neutral wire has been connected to the timer motor and that you can see the gears turning through the small inspection hole, If the gears aren't moving, the clocks not working.

Nutone bathroom heater has stopped working and I need some troubleshooting tips.

My Nutone heater is not working. How can I fix it or reset it?

Check the power going to the NUTONE HEATER from the wall switch, and then from the wall switch going back to the panel. If that is good then you might have a bad thermal cutoff device inside the unit. This is the protection device that turns off the unit if it overheats. Hope that helps.

Figuring out the best way to hook up a low voltage lighting system that somebody else prewired.

I have a total of 11 feeds that the person who installed my paver patio left pre wired I have 8 lights to mount on my steps (8watts per light) 3 wall mounts (8 watts ) and then I have 4 beds around the patio where I will probably use some 15 watts lights x 8 which should be fine for a 300watt transformer . How is the best way to test if it is a closed loop system via continuity or attach one end to a transformer and find if there is power on any other wire which would be the closed end of the loop? Does the closed end need to be on the same voltage in a multi tap transformer. If it starts on a 12 volt it should end on a 12 volt in the multi tap connections ? Do you have a good book on describing the open and closed loops open I understand its the closed that I get confused and can you get a multi tap with all 12v taps because the wire looks to be a 12 gauge so it would make life easier. Thanks

You need to pick up a inexpensive multi-tester that has an ohm meter and volt meter. The ohm meter will allow you to identify each wire to see where it starts and where it ends up. The volt meter will allow you to check for voltage drop if the wires are too long or too small. If you strip back each wire and twist one end together that will allow you to use the ohm meter on the other end to find each wire.

After you label them, then you can start DESIGNING YOUR LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM and seeing the best way to terminate them. If you just have one or two lights on each home run wire, you can splice them at the transformer or double lug them if you transformer has screw terminals like the 300 WATT TECHLIGHT TRANSFORMER.

We have many transformers that will work. I suggest that you view one of my previous OUTDOOR LIGHTING BLOGS to learn more about calculating loads and sizing transformers.

Dimming electronic low voltage transformers with electronic dimmer controls.

I have eight individual lights that went out and was told that the transformers were blown due to improper installation of dimmer switches. The switches were already installed when I bought the house. I have new switches and need new transformers...Are the above transformers appropriate for Lutron dimmer switches?Thank you.

Yes, these are designed to work with LUTRON ELECTRONIC STYLE DIMMER CONTROLS.

Can somebody explain to me how to size the wire and transformer for a low voltage lighting system.

Is your 150 WATT TRANSFORMER capable of handling multiple runs. If so, how many? I'm planning landscape lighting for my home and as I do research I'm getting the impression that its often an advantage to have an additional run. What about the intermatic Malibu transformers? Which transformers can handle multiple runs?

Multiple runs are always a good wiring method for low voltage lighting systems. Just because a transformer has one circuit breaker, that does not mean you can't run several wires from the lights back to the transformer. In fact, it's a great idea to run multiple wires!

If you divide your total wattage (say 150 watts) by your operating voltage (12 volts) you get amperage (12.5 amps). This is how you figure out how many wires and what size you need. Distance also plays a major factor in determining the wire as well. 12/2 cable is good for up to 30 amps and 10/2 cable is designed for 30 amps.

Most TRANSFORMERS with circuit breakers utilize one or more 25 amp breakers depending on the capacity of the transformer.

I hope this information is helpful in your design. Sit down and do the math before purchasing or buying your LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM. It will save you time and frustration.

Solving low voltage lighting issues by using home run wiring methods.

In my back garden, I have a low voltage 300w transformer powering about 14 lights totaling about 150-160 w. The power line from the transformer comes to a "T" intersection where one line goes one way and one line another way. One one side of the garden, the lights are bright and work well. The lights powered by the other line, however, are dim by comparison. I've tried re-working the power line at the "T" with new connectors at least three times, but with no good result. Also, the power line feels very warm (almost hot) to the touch near the T. Is this normal? Any suggestions on how I can fix the lighting so that I get a uniform light output from all of my lights?

The best fix for your low voltage lighting system is to run a new wire from the transformer and split the two loads into two home run wires. Simply remove the T connector and have two 12/2 DIRECT BURIAL WIRES going back to the transformer. This will solve you problem and put this issue to bed.

Lighting transformers for outdoor low voltage lighting systems.

In ordering your Techlight transformer, when asked for secondary circuit breakers for additional $12.08, does that mean I will have to separate connections so I can split my deck lighting system? Double connections? Also, I'm in need of approximately 200 watts, is it OK for me to purchase the 300 for future additions? What is the largest size wire this transformer will take? Will this transformer make any noise at all? I would like not to have any buzzing.Thank you for your quick response.

If you order the 300 WATT TRANSFORMER with one circuit breaker it will handle up to 300 watts or 25 amps of load. This means you will need to split your lights into two home run wires using 12/2 CABLE and combine them in the transformer wiring compartment to the circuit breaker. Do not exceed 20 amps on 12/2 wire!

A better idea would be to purchase the 600 WATT TRANSFORMER giving yourself plenty of room to add more landscape lighting. You may want to add PATH LIGHTS, FOUNTAIN LIGHTS, HANGING LIGHTS, STEP LIGHTS and other cool lights. You will find great enjoyment installing a low voltage lighting system. It is a fun and very rewarding experience.

Volleyball and basketball lights designed for residential sport courts and other recreational facilities.

I'd like to install minimum lighting for a multi-sport court that I have in my backyard. I have a 40' x 80' court laid out for full court basketball and volleyball. Can I use 2 lights mounted in the center just outside the volleyball poles?

Yes, these TENNIS 190 COURT POLES or SPORT COURT KIT lights mounted at center court will provide adequate illumination for your combination volleyball/basketball court. We have both direct burial poles as well as those that require a concrete footing. You could offset them slightly to spread the light out if you wanted to.

If you are doing the work yourself, I would go with the direct burial pole. You local rental center has a powered post hole auger that is perfect for drilling the foundation.

Contact Joe in customer service and he can provide you a customized quote. You can even order a GFCI receptacle option if you need a plug near the court for a leaf blower.

How hard is it to add a door jamb switch in my closet after the fact?

I would like to add a door jamb switch to our entry coat closet. The closet is wired for a light but at the moment we only have a wall switch and covered junction box because we didn't think we needed a light at the time. How difficult is it to take wire the jamb switch "after the fact"? I would have to disconnect the rocker switch that is now on the wall...The junction box for the light fixture is directly above the door. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you are willing to cut drywall and repaint the wall it is really very easy. Otherwise, you might consider replacing the switch with an OCCUPANCY SENSOR.

If you decide to go with the JAMB SWITCH you just reroute the wire from the old switch to the jamb switch and you are in business. Oh, you will also need a wood chisel to fit the box in the jamb. Sounds like a fun project!

Low voltage recessed down light for soffit lighting around the house.

I'm searching for "down lights" to mount in the pitched eaves of our home. The beam must project down vertically to the ground and not 90 degrees vertically from the eave. This will require the eyeball to pivot. I'm trying to "wash" the wall with a dim light. I've tried just a regular 120V recessed eyeball light with various bulbs including halogen but it creates a harsh light and not fully directional. Can you help? Thanks

The HALO H1499RT/1420P is a great little adjustable accent light. If you use a wide spread MR16 lamp (EXN) in combination with a PRISMATIC MR16 LENS you will be most pleased with the results. You can also use a DIMMER CONTROL to dial in just the right amount of light.

Horse arena lighting using direct burial steel poles and HID fixtures.

I have an outdoor (horse) riding arena approximately 165 feet by 110 feet in size. Need to know how many lights (type, watts etc), poles (type, height) etc. and spacing to provide adequate coverage for evening riding. Thanks

I will ask Joe to contact you regarding your HORSE ARENA. For an area that big you would need a minimum of twelve 400 watt lights and six 30' poles to provide adequate coverage. Talk to Joe about our direct burial poles, which would work better for your application instead of those that require a concrete footing.

Low voltage lighting issues related to long runs with big wattage loads.

I have a 600W transformer split with 2 runs of 12/2 gauge cable, with a 300W max on each run. I have (2) 35W + (5) 20W on the first run, respectively, about 250ft run. The second run has (1) 35W and (1) 150W [Lamppost, 3 x 50W] on it, approximately 75ft run. The lamp post is continually going out, and when we disassemble the pole, for the 3rd time now, we find that the connector is slightly melted. This time I was also able to determine that the cable in the post itself (smaller, 14 gauge? not sure) gets warm. We were going to just hard wire the lamp into the 12 gauge, but the fact that it's getting warm concerns me. I also did a volt test and there are 6V at the connection. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have quite an amperage load on your existing wire. Frankly, 250 feet on 12/2 cable is really too great of a distance to carry your load. You might try removing the connector and use wire nuts for the splice as a quick fix.

To correct the problem you need a MULTI_TAP TRANSFORMER to step up the voltage which will reduce the amperage at the end of the run. And lastly, you should run a new wire and split up one or both loads. To really solve the amperage problem you either need to use an amp probe or do the math.

Check out our CALCULATING AMPERAGE LOADS information page for more details on the subject.

Outdoor patio speakers and rock speakers for pools, patios and backyards.

I want to install a pair of patio speakers. I have already run the wires through the drywall when my house was being constructed, can I install the speakers directly on the vinyl siding. I am not sure if the siding will hold, any other ideas?

Sure, remember the siding is just covering up the plywood exterior of the house. So if you use long wood screw to securely attach the OUTDOOR SPEAKER MOUNTING BRACKET, you should be fine.

You might also consider using our OUTDOOR ROCK SPEAKERS as they produce a very nice sound. We have a small PAIR OF ROCK SPEAKERS in our selection that might be of interest to you. For the price, they are a tremendous value.

Door jamb switches are easy to install and easy to wire.

Does your door jamb switch come with wiring pigtail? What size? Will it handle #12 AWG? I want to hard wire this into a 20A circuit. It will only have a 50W (1/2 amp) lite connected. Does this wire like a normal switch with screw terminals?

The DOOR JAMB SWITCH has two 16 gauge pigtail wires that would connect to your wires with wire nuts inside the junction box The hardest part of this door jamb switch is cutting the wood to install the box. The wiring is the easy part.

Thanks for the great question and for shopping at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We look forward to earning your valued business.

Dimmer switches are a perfect way to extend lamp life and create ambiance.

Hi, We have 26 recessed flood lights in the eaves of our roof. The 50 Watts, Par 20 flood light, medium base 120 volt bulbs don''t even last a year. A contractor has to come to change the lights so we wait until at least 6 are gone before we change them all. There must be a longer lasting bulb that we can get for such a location. Any information or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. I live in Ontario, Canada. Thanks

The easiest way to extend the lamp life of your soffit lights is with the use of a DIMMER CONTROL. However, you will need a 1500 WATT LUTRON NOVA T DIMMER to handle the load. This will solve your problem and create a nice lighting effect. Please visit our DIMMER FAQ SECTION for more information.

Thanks for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design all the way from Canada. We appreciate your business and look forward to processing your order.

LED track lighting kits allow you to select a specific color of light.

Hi, I'm interested in getting some colored lighting for my condo but I have a few questions: 1. Are there any big differences between the 2 LED track lighting systems? They seem pretty similar. 2. I''m much more interested in giving the room a colored "tint" (like a faint wall washing effect for a 15' x 15' room) than 3 straight beams of light. Would the system be able to give me that effect or would another of your products better suit my needs? 3. How does the system connect to power? Thanks for your help!

The pictures do not reflect the actual quality of the lights. They are really for illustration purposes t show the multitude of colors. If you want to wash the walls with a colored light, these are the right product for you. The light is soft, effective and very cool to operate.

All the LED TRACK LIGHT KITS we offer simply connect to an electrical power supply in the ceiling. Please contact Jeremy for more detailed information and ordering information at 800-239-2939.

We are delighted that you are considering LED lights from Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We look forward to earning your business.

Outdoor New Orleans gas lanterns are easy to install and require very few tools.

What information or tools do I need to install your outdoor gas lanterns on the exterior of my home?

The fixture will mount using lead or plastic anchors if your house is brick or stucco. If you house is wood, simply use wood screws to attach the mounting bracket. So you will need a drill, screwdriver and plumbing supplies. Instructions are included with every gas lantern.
