We have an outdoor small fountain in the front yard of this condo in Wash. DC. It Is about 8' in diameter, and 3' feet deep. The light we have had until now started taking water in, and could not be repaired. What can u suggest for us to use. Thank you.
My favorite FOUNTAIN LIGHT is from Focus Lighting. The SL11 PAR36 UNDERWATER LIGHT is my favorite because it uses a sealed beam lamp. This means it will never leak or take on water. When it burns out, you simply change the lamp. Be sure and get the angle bracket and glare shield for the best results.I would get at least three lights for your size fountain.

Please send me some general info about mercury vapor lamps, including information about self ballasted mercury vapor light bulbs.
The SELF BALLASTED MERCURY VAPOR LIGHT is perfect for retrofit applications. This lamp utilizes solid state technology to produce a mercury vapor light source without having to use a traditional remote magnetic ballast. So if you have incandescent tree lighting and want to introduce a longer life lamp and shift the color to blue green, this is a perfect way to do that. This lamp is slightly longer than standard R40 lamps and may not fit in some fixtures with lenses.

Hello, I hired an electrical contractor to replace and install three new outdoor post lights which are on a low voltage system with a transformer. The new lights are regular post lights and on a timer and often do not work. I called the contractor back and he made several cuts in the wires along the ground to test the power and then repaired those cuts with plastic caps, glue and black tape. The lights worked for a short time and then would not turn on once again. I decided to to check out the wires myself, so I dug up part of the wire and found that the pieced together wires had actually burned and melted the plastic caps and tape covering the wire connections. I have just replaced those patched connecctions with some new wire and plastic connectors made by a low voltage co. The lights worked for one night and now do not work again Any thoughts as to what might be going on?? (FYI- The previous post lights were installed by another electrician and worked fine for years. In fact they were still working but the glass in one had broken and couldn''t be matched so I replaced all three lights. I am wondering--Did the post lights need to be converted in some way to be used on a low voltage system? The lights do have low voltage bulbs in them. Thanks!
If the wires melted chances are the amperage is too high for the capacity of the wire. Remember, the lower the voltage, the higher the amperage. Tell your electrical contractor to get out his amp meter and give you a reading. If you have more than 20 amps on a 12 gauge wire, you have a problem.
I would call the electrican back and make him fix it.

I am looking for some low cost lighting for my outdoor wedding. I am creating a lounge area in the middle of a vineyard and need dim lighting for my guests to see. Do you have any fixtures that would create enough light, be relatively low cost, and operated on batteries?
The only BATTERY OPERATED LIGHTS we have are perfect for table decorations and floral arrangements. Unfortunately, they are all we have at this time. They are a cost effective way to make things sparkle.

What is the beam spread on this landscape lighting fixture? I would like to mount a
up light (cannot call it an "
up light, due to city constraints) to wash two stone posts (6''-0" high) that flank double Entry Gates. How far do they need to be placed from the posts and what is the lowest wattage available?
This particular WALL WASHER FIXTURE has about a 55+ degree beam spread. You can always control the intensity with a DIMMER CONTROL. Take a look at the FOCUS DL14 as an alternate. Used in combination with a beam softener and hex cell louver this can be a very stealth lighting source.
I hope this helps you past the regulations in your area. We appreciate your questions here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Feel free to give us a call at 800-239-2939 if you need help selecting another fixture.

I have a 300 watt Malibu transformer that I want to run two lines of lights off of. One line runs about 80 feet and has 77 w. The other runs about the same length but with 90w. I purchased two lengths of 100' 12/2 wire. I was planning on running them independently so that I got a little voltage drop to save
light bulbs. However, I could very easily make this a continuous loop - both runs end up very close to the same spot. What would your recommend? With the two lines leaving the transformer, do I just connect both of them at the terminal screws or do I need to run to a ''T'' connector and split them from there?
You can never go wrong with a continuous loop wiring system as far as voltage drop. You do have to pay attention to the polarity of the wires so that you don't short out the system. Just note the markings on the wire and use a consistent method of installing the lights.
You might just try running two runs and see if you have any VOLTAGE DROP ISSUES. If you do, you can always complete the circuit and make the transition to a continuous loop system.
Thanks for asking the question. We appreciate any and all inquiries to Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. If we can be of further assistance, please call us at 800-239-2939.

I want to
up light 5 white birch trees behind my pool. I want to highlight the trunks with a little bit of light on the foliage. I definitely don''t want this to be the focal point. The row of trees is about 65 feet long and the center of this row will be 100 feet from the transformer. I was planning on 20W MR-16 Halogen
up lights using 8/2 wire and utilizing a T-shape with 2 lights to one side and 3 to the other side. If I use 10/2 wire and 13-14 volt output, would that do the trick? Do most transformers accept 8/2 wire? Any comment about my bulb choice? Thank you very much
I like you selection of 20 watt lamps for achieving the light levels you have described. Most LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING TRANSFORMERS will accept a 8/2 cables or a cluster of smaller DIRECT BURIAL CABLES if you choose to split up the load into several home runs. I like the idea of multiple cables because it is easier to balance the loads and diagnose problems should they occur.
We have some PRE-PACKAGED MR16 LIGHTING KITS that might be just what you are looking for. They contain everything you need to illuminate your trees. You might see if these lighting fixtures appeal to you. Customer service will be happy to reconfigure one for you if you have other ideas.

For the 100 ft string, at 24'''' spacing, I assume a total of 50 lights? Thanks. PS. Would these work for a trellis?
Sure, installing GLOBE LIGHTS on arbors and trellis structures can be quite attractive especially when used with a DIMMER CONTROL. That way you can set the mood! Makes for a great party atmosphere.
Also, ICICLE LIGHTS can be very effective if run in rows on each timber and not just around the perimeter. They weatherproof lights can be used all year long and will give you years of nighttime enjoyment.

I would like to know more about the RAB
STL12
LV motion detector. How does it install? What fixtures can be hooked up with it? How far from the transformer can it be? ETC. Thanks
This 12 VOLT MOTION DETECTOR unit is designed to work in line between the 12 volt transformer and the lights. It is rated at 96 watts! I would not go more that 100 feet away from the transformer as a rule of thumb.
Thanks for the LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING question. Please let us know if we can help. Our number is 800-239-2939.

I want to light up my house architecture. One person recommends 110 volt system while another suggests a 12 volt system. What do you recommend and why?
12 volt lighting is very easy to install and can be quite effective. The lights are more delicate and can be moved around as the plants mature. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM.
120 volt lighting is considered more heavy duty and would require the help of a licensed electrician. You have more color and wattage options to choose from. However, since all fixtures are mounted on junction boxes they are not easy to relocate or remove.
Check out our LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS IN A BOX as a first option. You can always add some UNDERWATER LIGHTS FOR FOUNTAINS, HANGING LIGHTS FOR ARBORS or PATH LIGHTS FOR STEPS OR WALKWAYS.
Low voltage lighting is a fun project for any homeowner. Thanks for shopping at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We would love to help you design and lighting system and earn your business. Always test your light locations before running the wires and burying the cable.

Does this motion detector unit come in a smaller package to fit an existing standard switch box? Also, can it be installed upside down? Ex. under the eave of a house?
The GOOD NIGHT TUFF SENSOR is designed to fit on a standard rectangular or round junction box. It does not come any smaller. I don't see any reason that you can't install the LIGHT SENSOR upside down as indicated.
