Dimming outdoor low voltage lighting systems with special dimmer switches.

Is there such a thing as a dimmer switch for standard low voltage landscape lighting? Thanks

You have two options for dimming a low voltage lighting system. One is to install a MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL on the supply side of the transformer. However, if you have a built in timer, this will not work. The second option is to purchase a FOCUS TRANSFORMER with a built in dimmer control. It dims on the load side (12V) and can be used with an internal or external timer or photocell.

Contact customer service at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design for more information on dimming transformers. The toll free number is 800-239-2939.

Step lighting can be a very effective way to prevent accidents.

I'm having a raised concrete patio put in my back. It will be raised about 2'' above ground level. It's wall will be out of natural stone. There are two sets of steps and I want to install step lights like your model DCL1-N on them and around the wall. My question is how do I do it? I'm confused. Are there electrical boxes that the contractor recesses into the steps/walls? Don't I need something to put the 12 gauge wire and 6ft pigtail in? I understand the process of the installation, but if I bury the pigtail and 12 gauge wire in concrete, how do I get to the wire if something breaks? If it was a 120v installation, the lights would come with a "back box", but your light looks like it screws into the concrete. Can you help me? Thanks

I would be glad to help you better understand the mounting techniques for installing LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING FIXTURES in a brick or stone wall. You are right, never install a wire without a conduit in a masonry wall!

The HADCO DCL1N is designed to mount directly to the wall without a back box. You should install a PVC conduit from each light back to the transformer location. Make sure you use electrical (sweep 90's) and not plumbing 90's to connect the conduits. Otherwise you will never be able to pull the wires!

These are great looking STEP LIGHTS! Thanks for shopping at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Call us at 800-239-2939 if you need help selecting a TRANSFORMER or WIRE for the project.

Installing a recessed plug behind art for picture is the best way to hide the cord.

How long is the cord on your picture lights? Trying to decide where to locate the outlet box for it. New construction.

The cord is typically 6' or so. You should use a PICTURE LIGHT RECEPTACLE and center it behind the art. Use a wall switch to control the light in combination with a DIMMER CONTROL.

Thanks for shopping for ART LIGHTING FIXTURES at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We are here to assist you so please give us a call at 800-239-2939.

We have many PICTURE LIGHTS to choose from.

Using grade level mercury vapor up lights to illuminate a tree.

How do I install 120V well light to illuminate a tree? I''m choosing 120V vice low voltage since the trees are far from the house. Is there a junction box / stake that I need? Any other material that I need? Any information would be appreciated.

For up lighting trees with WELL LIGHTS I like to use an above grade junction box or ballast box to prevent water from siphoning into the fixture through the wire.

MERCURY VAPOR WELL LIGHTS are the best for lighting trees due to the color they produce. 100 watts is usually plenty of light for a medium sized tree or perhaps two fixtures if the tree is large. The ballast box can be located a maximum of 100' away from the tree. Be sure and install a pea gravel base below the fixture for drainage.

Thanks for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting Design. We are here to help, so please call 8000-239-2939 if we can assist you.

Picture lights need a recessed clock receptacle behind the art for power.

We have purchased six of your 14" picture lights for a project we are trying to complete. And since the lights are currently back order and will not be shipped until the beginning of May, how can I get any specifications on rough-in or installation? We have a fair amount of stain grade material to be completed around the lights and need to get the appropriate installation electrical boxes places as soon as possible. Thanks!

These lights are designed to plug into a CLOCK RECEPTACLE behind the art. Simply rough in a single gang junction box centered behind the art. If possible, switch the outlets otherwise the light has a twist switch on the cord. This can be stapled to the back of the frame for easy access.

Thanks for the purchase and shopping with Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future.

Replacement light bulbs for Christmas decorations and other holiday lighting equipment.

I am not sure what the size type is. I have a string of colored lights, the bulbs are about 2 3/4 inches long and the base which screws in is about 5/8 inch diameter. These are a bit larger than standard night light bulbs but smaller that standard house lamp bases. I need to order a bunch for replacement of burnouts. If you cannot id the type from this description I could send a photo scan of the 3 bulbs side by side to give you a picture id opportunity. Let me know pls. Thanks.

Sounds like you are looking for INTERMEDIATE BASE REPLACEMENT LAMPS for your light strings. Intermediate base lamps are slightly larger than a candelabra base and smaller than a standard medium base.

Track lighting in a kitchen can be very effective form of general lighting.

Is it possible to do long lengths of flexible track lighting? I would like to do 32 feet total of 120V track across a kitchen that is being totally remodeled. What are the limits on track length/ wattage per transformer, and can "kits" be connected together to look like one long undulating track? Also, can we combine lower wattage fixtures to accent wood cabinets, etc. Along with higher wattage general/task lighting fixtures? (Will it look funny to have some small fixtures pointing at the walls and some larger ones basically pointing straight down on the same system?) I think it will look O.K, but am not sure. The room is 22 X 12 feet and there will only be 4 recessed can lights in place. All other lighting except under the counter pucks would be from this track. I would like to highlight the faces of the cabinets, etc as well as provide task lighting over an island (with drop pendants on the track) and general ambiance and illumination.Any help you can give me on what parts or kits I need to get to do this is very appreciated! Great website, by the way! Thanks for your time-

A SINGLE CIRCUIT TRACK LIGHT is designed for up to 1920 watts of light on a full 20 amp circuit. This allows for a safety factor if used for continuous duty.

I would select the same fixture style and use smaller wattage lamps where you want a softer look. That way the lights all look the same.

If you order a two circuit track system, you can switch one or more lights on the same track separate from the others. Thanks for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design for your KITCHEN LIGHTING needs. Give us a call at 800-239-2939.

Chandeliers form Concord Lighting, Framburg Lighting, and Justice Design for dining rooms.

We are in the process of redecorating a dining room at our house. The designer has suggested that I locate a chandelier that I like on the internet. She told me to look for an "Old World" looking chandelier with alabaster shades. You have so many fixtures, can you help me narrow my choices?

I would be glad to assist you in selecting a new DINING ROOM CHANDELIER for your home. We do have many shapes, sizes and styles of CHANDELIERS to choose from. CONCORD has a very good looking chandelier line as does JUSTICE DESIGN.

In addition to CONCORD, JUSTICE DESIGN and FRAMBURG we also have chandeliers from WESTINGHOUSE, AZIANO and AMLITE. They range in price and quality, so you might look them over as well.

Thanks for shopping with us here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. I would suggest that you also install a DIMMER CONTROL so that you can set the mood for that special dinner.

Please give us a call at 800-239-2939 if we can be of further assistance or have your designer call should she have any questions or concerns.

Tennis court lighting using extruded fixtures, die cast fixtures and dual lamp CCS2000 fixtures.

I am interested in purchasing some tennis court lighting fixtures from your firm. Can you please tell me the difference between the die cast and extruded fixtures? How do these tennis court light compare to the CCS2000 series?

We get a lot of questions regarding which TENNIS COURT LIGHTING FIXTURE is right for me. Frankly, the difference between die cast and extruded fixtures boils down to a personal preference. The extruded fixture has a more traditional tennis court look, where the die cast leans towards a more modern look. The extruded has less wind drag (EPA) than the die cast due to the overall height. There is no difference in light quality or light output between the two tennis court lights.

The CCS2000 SERIES TENNIS COURT LIGHTS are our top off the line competition grade lighting fixtures. The dual 1000 watt lamps per fixture have tremendous light output and are good for stadium courts and other courts with spectators. The main advantage of these lights is simply taller poles, fewer poles with more light output. This translates into lower operating costs and less concrete work during the installation.

These are the kind of tennis court lights you see at the club. Thanks for the question and your interest in TENNIS COURT LIGHTING PACKAGES from Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Just give us a call at 800-239-2939 if we can be of assistance.

Soffit lighting fixtures that are small, inexpensive and effective outdoor lights.

I need low voltage lighting to install in soffit. Needs to know about the insulation. Can it be placed near insulation or must the insulation be removed?

Take a look at the AZIANO RECESSED LIGHTS for soffit lighting. These have IC housing options or they can be installed in a non IC method. Please note they are sold in lots of 12 units and they come with 120 volt MR16 lamps. This makes them easy to install and dim with a standard DIMMER CONTROL.

Basketball lighting fixtures for residential recreational spaces.

I am putting a basketball court outside and I have a yard light but it's not high enough to light up the whole area. Do you have any basketball court light kits that are long, but not 20' high? Thank you

You can order our BASKETBALL COURT LIGHT to any height you want. So if you want a 12' pole just specify that in the comment box when ordering. I would go with the 250-watt model if you shorten the pole. If you have a full half court, you may want to center one on each side for balanced coverage.

Lighting for sports courts is one of the many OUTDOOR LIGHTING PRODUCTS we offer. We also have FIBERGLASS DIRECT BURIAL POLES if you want a pole that does not require a footing.

Thanks for considering the lighting equipment from Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Please let customer service know that you want to down size the lamp wattage and shorten the pole when ordering. Just give them a call at 800-239-2939.

With a type 5 reflector (flood) you can expect for this light to cover roughly a 2500 square foot area. Of course, the light will be brightest under the source and fade over distance.

Pre lit Christmas trees designed for commercial jobs and theme parks in sizes up to 32 feet high.

We are shopping for a tree like this, need more information about the electrical specifications and a copy of the assembly instructions

The PRE LIT EVEREST CHRISTMAS TREE is a very good looking and well designed commercial Christmas tree. The construction is modular and consists of a topper and subsequent rings which can be added to vary the height. So if you decide later to increase the size of your tree from 26 to 32 feet, you simply purchase a couple more rings.

All the limbs are the same, so there is no following a color code or guessing what goes where. That makes assembly and dis assembly of the tree fairly easy. And the rings are designed to stack on top of each other for easy storage.

Since the tree is so large, you simply get inside the tree to make the electrical connections. Each ring has a a cord and plug that attach to a harness. I have actually been inside a 32' Everest tree at the factory and was amazed at the engineering that goes into one of these trees. I believe they had four 20 amp 120 volt dedicated circuits feeding the tree. You could also have your electrical department design a step down transformer if you only have 277 or 240 volt power. All the rings were bolted together and the base was anchored to the floor for extra safety. It's a great looking Christmas tree!

I will have Aaron in customer service contact regarding more technical information and assembly instructions. He can find out the electrical requirements for you as well.

We would be proud to work with Disney and would certainly be happy to quote other HOLIDAY LIGHTING DECORATIONS, LED CHRISTMAS TREES, or GLOBE LIGHT STRINGS that might be on your wish list.

Why are my low voltage outdoor lights so dim?

I was wondering what the best wattage transformer and wire I could use for the lights? I have a one fixture which is about 45 feet from the power supply and when I had a 300 watt transformer with 12 gauge wire the lights were really dim the further from the transformer you got. Any ideas?

Check out our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM page for specific solutions

Assuming you have 300 watts total on 12/2 cable that is overloaded. Split the lights into three home runs back to the transformer and that will solve the problem. FYI - 300 watts divided by 12 volts equals 25 amps. 12/2 wire is only rated for 20 amps!

Thanks for shopping with Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We are here to help and look forward to your call. 800-239-2939.

How many lights can I put on an existing circuit breaker?

We are replacing our fluorescent kitchen lighting with halogen track lights. We currently have 160 watts (4 x 40 watt fluorescent). How do I know the max watts when we replace? We have standard 120v circuit box. We would like to put in 12 x 50 watt halogens (6 on each side). Will this blow our circuit?

That depends on your breaker, wire size and other lights that might be on the circuit. If you have 12/2 wire and a 20 amp breaker, you can go up to 1920 watts. I would think that you would be fine adding roughly 700 watts. You will need a 1000 WATT LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL.

Xenon under cabinet lights produce more work light than rope lights.

I want to use this under top cabinets over a desk. Will it be enough light in a home office There is good lighting in the room. I need instructions for installation and to know all accessories I will need.

ROPE LIGHT is not my favorite for task lighting over a desk. It is really intended as an accent light. However, it is used for cabinet lighting all the time.

Have you looked at our XENON UNDER CABINET LIGHTS? They are easy to install and give off a tremendous amount of work light. They can also be dimmed should you prefer a softer light.

Thanks for the office lighting question. We look forward to assisting you here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design.

Lutron skylark dimmer switch can control two 300 watt incandescent loads.

I am looking for a dual dimmer like the Skylark S2-L that is capable of at least 600watts per switch leg. Is there any such thing available?

Nope! The only combination SKYLARK DIMMER made by LUTRON is rated for 300 watts per switch leg. You must also debate that if you gang it with another dimmer control in the same switch box.

Mounting a security camera on a commercial outdoor lighting pole.

We intend to add an elevated environmental security camera opposite or above the light fixture. Can cables run down the center channel of the post easily? Any problem with our mounting concept? Any recommended support arms to use with the camera mount? Delivery: Are there any units in ready-to-ship stock? If so, with what options? Thanks

I don't see any immediate problems with installing a security camera on a lighting pole. As far as the bracket, you should check with the camera supplier for weatherproof mounting enclosures and brackets. Normal; lead time is 5-7 business days from receipt of order and acceptance of freight charges.

Thanks for shopping with us and please do call customer service at 800-239-2939 should you need help with your COMMERCIAL LIGHTING POLES.

Selecting a dimmer control that is right for your low voltage lighting fixtures.

It states online that puck lights are dimmable. My question is do you install the dimmer switch on the primary side of the transformer, which in this case is 120 volts a/c? Or do you install the dimmer switch on the secondary side of the transformer, which in this case is 12 volts. Also is the secondary side of the transformer a/c or d/c voltage?

It is always best to dim the primary side of the transformer. We have A/C dimmer controls for MAGNETIC TRANSORMERS and ELECTRONIC TRANSFORMERS. The secondary side of the transformer also produces A/C current.

Check out out Residential Landscape Lighting & Design FAQ'S for more information on dimming low voltage lighting fixtures.

Call us at 800-239-2939 if we can help you select the right dimmer control.

Mercury vapor tree lighting using up lights and down lights create moonlight effect.

I have a number of very large fir trees in my backyard where I would like to install flood type down lights. The trees are perhaps 150 feet high. Is there a type of light you would recommend? Also, how high up would you recommend mounting them?

I would use two 175-WATT MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHTS with tube shields, per tree to create a moonlight landscape lighting effect. The higher you go up into the tree the more effective and realistic the moonlighting will look. At least go up 40 to 60 feet!

You can also use a 175-WATT MERCURY VAPOR BOX FLOOD LIGHT mounted midway up the tree to illuminate the crown of the trees. This is particularly effective when you can see the trees over the house from the street view. It also helps conceal the hot spot created by the light source up in the tree.

Check out our LANDSCAPE LIGHTING IMAGE GALLERY for some inspiration and ideas. Thanks for checking in with us. We look forward to earning your business here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Toll free 800-239-2939.

Sign lights in halogen, incandescent and fluorescent lamp types.

Please confirm that this is a 120 volt lighting fixture. The mention of 12 V is confusing. Would it still be water resistant if the mounting shaft were not vertical, but was horizontal. I need to illuminate a sign on a post. So the fixture will not be far from the signboard. Can I get immediate dispersion of light, close to the end of the fixture. Thanks

This is a low voltage pin spot fixture that we use for illuminating fountains and sculptures from long throws. If you are just highlighting a sign, I would keep in simple.

Take a look at the RAB SPOT LIGHT. It is small, inexpensive and a pretty good looking fixture. We also have decorative GOOSENECK LIGHTS designed for sign lighting. And finally, we have some commercial grade FLUORESCENT SIGN LIGHTS that might be of interest.

We look forward to assisting you here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Feel free to call 800-239-2939 to discuss your options.

Xenon under cabinet lights are fully enclosed and have a frosted lens to soften the task light.

Is there some sort of diffuser that covers the bulbs for the House of Troy undercabinet light? The pictures and text description do not mention any kind of diffuser. I would be very unhappy if I were to purchase this item and then find that the bulbs were directly visible.

They are exposed from the back. The front lip does conceal the light source from normal viewing angles. You might want to look at the XENON LIGHT STRIPS as they are enclosed, less expensive and have a frosted lens.

How difficult is it to hook up a motion detector for my outdoor lighting fixture?

I want this light for the deck outside of my apt. What do I need out there to install this light? (I'm not handy and don't know a thing about how something like this works.)

The motion detector acts basically like an automated switch. You simply remove your light and mount the MOTION DETECTOR on the fixture or adjacent to the fixture on a
