How much light does this lamp give? I am concerned about the ''disclaimer'' regarding its inability to give same amount of light as a plug-in lamp. What % less light does it give? Have customers been unhappy with the product in the past?
Battery lights just simply don't give the same quantity of light as those that plug in. We have not had complaints as most people who buy them simply don't have electrical power near the art. You should expect about 50% less light than standard models.

I sell fountains and would like the fountains to turn on when they drive up and off when they drive off...what do I need???
Any simple MOTION DETECTOR used in combination with a LIGHTING CONTACTOR will turn your fountain off and on. The contactor reduces the load on the motion detector on larger fountains. If you are talking about a simple pump, the motion detector is rated for a approximately 10 amps.
Please give us a call here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design at 800-239-2939 when you are ready to place the order. You will need a JUNCTION BOX for the lighting contactor.

I have built a new deck, 14' x 30', using composite products. One end is enclosed with a privacy fence for a hot tub (14''x18''). The fence is 6' and made of the same material as the deck. I am interested in low voltage lighting and something in a postcap style. However, I am concerned that the light will be shining down in people's eyes. Can you recommend something? I have 7 posts in this area. The other part of the deck uses regular railings. I have one set of 4 steps going down to the yard. Thank You.
I like the HADCO DL4N POST TOP LIGHT for decks and walkways.
If you install a LUTRON MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL on the TRANSFORMER you can set the mood and glare will not be an issue. This fixture has a prismatic diffuser to soften the light.

Will the Lutron fluorescent dimmer switch work with dimmable compact fluorescent bulbs? I was told I need a special dimmer. Thanks
Some fluorescent lamps, such as those from GREENLITE have built in ballasts and will dim with standard dimmer controls. The LUTRON FLUORESCENT DIMMER SWITCH that you are looking at one works in tandem with a LUTRON ELECTRONIC DIMMING BALLAST.

I am doing a project in Palm Beach County Florida and will need some 20' metal halide, 250W, 120 volt parking lot light poles. You state that the wind zone for your poles is up to 100 mph. I am concerned that this will not be enough for local conditions. The map on the building dept website shows this area as 140mph. Do you have poles rated this high? Does anyone?
We certainly have COMMERCIAL POLE KITS that will work in your WIND ZONE. EPA is determined by the drag created by the fixture and the pole. I would recommend that you contact Jeremy in customer service at 800-239-2939. He can specify a lighting pole that will meet your requirements in Florida.

I would like to purchase and mount the TL16M, 16" low bay light & wire it for existing 110 outlets. Will I be able to wire this type of light for 110 volts?
I don't see why not. The LOW BAY LIGHT does come with a twist lock cord cap that you can either cut off and hard wire or install a twist lock receptacle to match. I don't know how many you plan to use, so check your load. Divide the wattage by the voltage to get total amps. Typically, 1920 watts is all you can put on a 120 volt 20 amp circuit.

The socket receptacle in my Halo H1499T housing is now free floating. Does this trim "anchor" the bulb so that it in a fixed position? What about a lens?
Yes, the HALO 1419P PIN HOLE TRIM and the HALO 1420P SLOTTED TRIM both have holders and Pyrex lenses to secure the MR16 lamps into the trim.
The free floating socket allows you to remove the trim and access the MR16 lamp for servicing. These are great little RECESSED LIGHTS that I use all the time.

I have a 100 year old live oak. I would like to make this the focus for my office. Is low voltage an option? What is best to use?
LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING produces a very nice warm light source and is very easy to install. Mounting several MR16 up lights around the base of the tree is a great way to illuminate the trunks and canopy of the tree. You might want to upgrade from 20 watt lamps to 35 watt lamps if the tree is really big.
MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTING on the other hand produces a blue green color that is much more dramatic than the low voltage option. This type of lighting is line voltage and would require an electrician to install. These lights can be installed in the shrubs or mounted in the tree if necessary.

I understand from archived questions that the 600 Watt transformer has: capability for 300w x 2. Each has Terminal A, B and C. I also understand that Terminal C is the neutral so....Here is my question.I have (1) 600 W transformer and (1) 300 Watt transformer. The 300 watt transformer powers: (4) uplights/50W each with no problem. Distance of home run roughly 76 feet. I added another 50w to the 300 trans. and the lights dimmed somewhat. I use 12/2 cable. My connections on the back of the 300 unit are: one wire under terminal A, one under B, nothing g under CThe same applies to the 600 watt transformer. I think I am not using the transformer correctly, or am I? I purchased the 600 w transformer for 6 additional up lights, total distance is about 350 feet (I have just under an acre) Am I going about this correctly and is there a diagram you might refer me to? Thanks so much....
You might want to run another cable and split up the lights into two home runs back to the transformer. Check out our CALCULATING VOLTAGE DROP PAGE for wiring ideas.
Now for the new installation that is 350 feet, you have a problem. I hope you purchased HEAVY DUTY LANDSCAPE CABLE such as 10/2 or even 8/2 and a HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER!
This kind of installation will take some careful planning otherwise you will be disappointed with the results. I would recommend that you hook up the lights, look at them at night before you bury and wires. That way you can make adjustments as needed.

Is there away that we can make the low voltage lighting brighter in our yard?
There are many ways to make your low voltage lighting system brighter. You first have to understand why the lights are dim. This can be due to several issues. One, is the LANDSCAPE CABLE size could be inadequate or too small to handle total wattage of the lights. Secondly, the distance from the TRANSFORMERS to the lights may be too far causing a voltage drop.
Visit our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING PAGE or CALCULATING VOLTAGE DROP for more information. These informational pages will help you understand the problem and find a solution.

We saw that on a previous question that you recommended 3 poles with two fixtures each on both sides of a 165 ft. x 270 ft. Riding arena. Our arena is about half that size (180 x 90). Is it possible to get decent coverage for training (not showing) at night with 3 poles on only one side if we go with two fixtures per pole and higher watt lights (e.g.1000-watts)? Would the 30' pole be better in that configuration? We are sitting right on sandstone bedrock at the edges of the arena. Do you have a recommendation for the dimensions of any concrete form used as a base for a 25 or 30' pole? Lastly (whew!!) we are in Norman, Oklahoma. Do you have local folks that you recommend who do installation work? Thanks! (Great Website!)
Please contact Jeremy in customer service at 800-239-2939 for design assistance. It would be much better if you had poles on each side to minimize shadows and provide uniform distribution. Do you have an SL04 in Cast Aluminum. I prefer the 4 louvers on the SL04 to the 2 louvers on the SL08. However, with the SL08 model costing more, I am assuming that Cast Aluminum is more resistant to weather conditions than Stamped Aluminum. Is this correct. I am concerned about the effects of weather conditions on the fixture itself, since I live in a hot, humid, salt air environment(900 yards from the ocean) here in South Carolina. What are your thoughts.
You should go with a COPPER STEP LIGHT or BRASS STEP LIGHT. These lights can withstand the salt air environment and will give you years of enjoyment.
I would not use an aluminum landscape lighting product near the coast. It will deteriorate in no time. Although you may pay more for a copper or brass step light, the investment is worth it!

What are the requirements for the footing/foundation for a Fiberglass pole? My specifications calls for a 20' pole. Does a Fiberglass pole require a foundation or can it be placed directly in the ground? Please advise.Thank you
The FIBERGLASS POLES are designed for direct burial and do not require a formal footing. Having said that you could certainly set these in concrete if you wanted.

I have this (and other nutone fans) fan in a new house built for us. Not sure where our builder bought fan , maybe home depot, but builder has left us and the MBR fan sounds like a truck and will probably stop working soon. What recourse do i have from nutone? The NUTONE FAN in your bathroom has a 4.0 sone rating which means it should not sound like a truck. PANASONIC VENT FANS are much more quiet if you are considering a change. I like the PANASONIC FANS.

I am building a game room and bar in my basement where there are no windows however, I will be putting a picture window in the framed wall a few inches from the concrete wall. I have a friend of mine who will either make a daytime Boston scene or nighttime scene to show outside. The window will also have a neon bar sign of some sort in the window to give the appearance of a Pool Hall or Bar. I would like to either have some soft daylight hidden above the window showing my daytime scene or lighting appropriate for a nighttime scene. My first thought would be a fluorescent tube for the daylight and maybe a neon orange stick for night? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

At present my outdoor lights go on by way of timer 5pm through 11pm. I also am able to turn the lights on with the wall switch at any time. Can I use this motion detector in addition to what I now have so that if motion is detected after my timer powers off the lights will go on. Thanks
Sounds like you have some kind of override switch on your security lighting. Once you kill the power to the MOTION DETECTOR normally it will not operate. Now if you remove the timer and use just the motion light it will do what you want. The RAB GOODNIGHT MOTION DETECTOR dims the lights down to 20% until it detects motion and then raises the lights to 100% for security. This is a very nice feature that not only saves energy, but extends lamp life.

NO. The LUTRON LAMP CORD DIMMER is designed for 120 volt operation only.

Your lights sound like a perfect solution for my under cabinet lighting. Can I get a spec sheet or directions on installing these lights before I order?, I want to know what I''m getting into and if I need to prepare. My situation is that I want to get a 2 light set and a 4 light set. The 4 light set will be under cabinets, 1 of the lights is on one side of a window, 2 are just on the other side of the window and then the 4th. Is on the other side of my stove. I need advice on how to run the wiring and how much space is needed for that wiring.
How you run the wires for your puck lights depends on the way your cabinets are built. The instructions do not cover anything other than the light fixture wiring. However, these puck lights are easy to install and the wire can be stapled behind trims for a finished look.

I am trying to light a piece of artwork that consists of a series of clear lexan boxes which contain mounted butterflies. There are 14 boxes arranged edge to edge so that the butterflies appear to be flying in a swarm. The problem arises with reflection of of the boxes. I need to illuminate the artwork from a severe angle from approx. 10''. I require the beam to be as focused as possible. I have tried MR16 low voltage bulbs in a variety of fixtures. Someone suggested an elongation lens for the MR16 as a solution. What does work is to extend the fixture so that the bulb is recessed approx 4" from the edge. Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated.
The beam elongation and other MR16 LENSES are great at changing the shape and quality of the light on the wall. I can't help you with the reflection issues. I would buy one of each of the MR16 lenses and give them a try. Start with the beam elongation and soft focus lenses first. You might also buy a hex cell louver to prevent glare from the light source.

The variation in light output is due to VOLTAGE DROP ISSUES. Split the lights into two separate wires going back to the transformer and you should be fine. Check out the above link for information on low voltage wiring methods.

We are about to redo our kitchen ceiling. It will change from a 1970's low drop down ceiling to a sloped ceiling. We would like to put recessed lights in the new ceiling. However, I don't like the large 6" trims for the 'sloped ceiling'' recessed lights. Is there an adapter that can be placed inside a recessed light so that we could control the lights direction and use regular baffle recessed lights? I want to do this from within the recessed area and don't want an eyeball hanging out of the recessed light. Is there any such option? If not, are there recessed lights that are for sloped ceilings that are smaller than 6"? Thank you
We do have some SMALL APERATURE RECESSED LIGHTS that would work well on a slightly sloped ceiling. IF your slope is severe, unfortunately you will have to go with larger trims.
The HALO H1499RT/1420P SLOTTED MR16 TRIM is one option. The other fixture that might work is the LITON LR965 MR16 ADJUSTABLE TRIM.
Have you considered using a CHANDELIER or HANGING PENDANTS in the kitchen as well? How about UNDERCABINET LIGHTING FIXTURES?

I purchased a LUMARK Dusk to Dawn LSMV80W White Light. The insaller opened the box and dropped the bulb. I am unable to find an 80W mercury vapor replacement bulb. It was purchased at Home Depot and they did not have that particular replacement bulb and said that fixture was being discontinued. Could you please help me in finding a replacement bulb. Thanks.
I am not familiar with a 80-watt MERCURY VAPOR LIGHT BULB. Are you sure that you have the right size? We only have 50, 100, 175, 250 and 400 watt mercury vapor lamps.
Thanks for checking with us here at Resdidential Landscape Lighting & Design. Call us at 800-239-2939 should you decide to select another OUTDOOR SECURITY LIGHTING FIXTURE.

We just put in a new lawn and have a path, i need lights that stay low to the ground so the kids dont trip over them. Maybe placed inside the path or hidden on the sides.
We have a couple of low profile PATH LIGHTS that might work for you. Without and plants or structures to protect the lights your choices are limited.
Take a look at the ROCK LIGHTS. Although they are not flush, at least they will not get damaged by the kids. The PAGODA LIGHT is also a cost effective solution.
Do you have any trees in the yard tall enough to use MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHTS?
Thanks for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. We look forward to assisting you and please call if you have any questions toll free at 800-239-2939.

Can your motion detectors be wired into existing light fixtures? If so, how is it wired? Thank you...
Yes, our motion detector can be installed to an existing outdoor light fixture.
The RAB MOTION DETECTOR is designed to go between the power supply coming from the switch going to the outdoor light fixture. So, as long as you can install the motion detector inline before the light, it will work fine.

Is it
possible to purchase just the capacitor for this mercury vapor ballast. I do not think I need the transformer. I would like to know your opinion?
We do not carry just the capacitor for the 400-watt model. Depending on the age of your ballast you might be better served to just replace the whole thing. When MERCURY VAPOR BALLASTS get old, they begin to buzz and make all kinds of noise.

I need a installation sheet on this
goose neck sign light. May I use this light for a project in Port St. Lucie on a brick building?
We do not have a formal specification sheet for this GOOSENECK LIGHTING FIXTURE. It mounts to a standard metal junction box such as a 4" round or 4/0 box. The fixture is well made and should work well for your application.

Please forward me spec sheets on your House of Troy 36" picture light.
The HOUSE OF TROY 36" TRADITIONAL PICTURE LIGHT is a great accent light for large works of art. The one shown to the left illustrates the 8" size and shape of the hood. The 36" traditional picture light has three mounting arms to support the fixture and uses (5) 25 watt or 40 watt tubular incandescent lamps. It comes in several finishes including polished brass.
I checked with the factory and they do not have a formal specification sheet on each individual light. What they do have is a PRODUCT OVERVIEW of the various models they offer.
I hope this information is helpful in your decision to purchase from Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. Give us a call toll free at 800-239-2939 if we can be of further assistance. Thank you!

I have some questions regarding this fixture. Does the price listed include the ballast? The ad lists the quad-tap ballast for this lamp as a pulse-start. Can you confirm that is the case? If the quad-tap ballast is a pulse-start, do you sell a PAR-38 metal halide lamp (which this fixture uses)with pulse start? I have not had any success in locating this type of lamp in the pulse start variation. Thanks for your help. These fixtures look to be good candidates for my application.
The lamp is not included with the RAB METAL HALIDE PATIO FIXTURE , although you can purchase one as an option. The fixture is designed for 120 volts or you can get a multi-tap version as well for use with 208, 277 and 240 volt supply voltage.

I would like to use this to replace a toggle switch that controls lights in the room. Would this product work and can I install it in the same box the toggle switch was in?
Photocell controls are for really designed for exterior use. They are activated by light levels and nothing else. If you want to replace a wall switch for interior lighting, you might want to consider using an OCCUPANCY SENSOR or a WALL TIMER. These kinds of HOME AUTOMATION devices are perfect for turning on the lights when someone is in the room.

I have a batting cage and an area (pitching mound) next to it. I want to light the whole thing 70 x 35'. Using the height of the cage plus 3' to mount the lights to. What type of lights would you recommend? How many? What wattage? Is fluorescent an option? How many etc?
I have seen all types of lighting installations for batting cages. Everything from HALOGEN LIGHTS mounted on the fence post, to FLUORESCENT LIGHTS suspended over the cage, to COMMERCIAL LIGHTING POLES illuminating the whole area.
How you illuminate the area really depends on your budget and how complicated you want to make this project. The poles would look the best, but require the most effort. The fluorescent option is probably the most practical. Why don't you send us a digital image of the cage and we will gladly design the lighting for you.

Is it safe for these to be covered in insulation? My attic has blown in insulation. It looks like ground up newspaper. I didn't realize the recommended bulb got so hot. I'm concerned about possible fire. I just installed 10 of these units in my recessed ceiling in my kitchen.
Yes! The HALO H7UICAT RECESSED LIGHTING HOUSINGS are designed for direct contact with insulation. They are UL Approved for this kind of installation.
Feel free to use these HALO RECESSED LIGHTS in your house with confidence that they are safe and well made.

What is the recommended distance under a metal halide 400 watt fixture, to combustible material such as books?
I am not sure about that one. If I had to guess, I would say four to six feet. That's a very good question!
If you are concerned about heat, we have many other LOW BAY FIXTURES with lower wattage lamps.

I am ready to place an order for my lights and supplies I need some help with the lay out. I have 2 runs of lights one to the front of the house and one around my fenced in pool area. I am putting 6 20watt lights across the front from one transformer the farthest light is about 130 feet from a 250 watt transformer. What would be the best way to wire the
lights the second run is from a 750 watt transformer. I will have12 18 watt lights around the perimeter of the pool and2 20 20 watt lights in the corner also 8 11 watt lights on the outside of the fence the farthest distance from the transformer is 80 feet. Thank you for any help you can give me.
We look forward to receiving your LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING order here at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design.
You might take a look at our wiring diagrams on the DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS page for some ideas. My rule of thumb is put no more than 100 watts on a 100' of 12/2 cable and you will be fine. So, just split the lights into several home runs back to the transformer and your lights will work fine.

I am ready to light my roping arena, but it is much, much narrower than the fellow who asked you the most recent question about arena lighting. My arena is 60' X 330'. I have 90 amps available, currently set up as (3) 30 AMP double pole (220V) breakers. What is the best lamp? Metal Halide? Sodium Vapor? Wattage? I have 6 1500 quartz lamps I can use, but don''t like the light (too yellow), and they don't seem to put out near the light the metal halides do.
Why don't you contact Aaron Lozier in customer service at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design. He can be reached at 800-239-2939. Aaron has extensive experience in HORSE ARENA LIGHTING and is happy to help specify and quote a lighting system that is just right for your arena.
I personally like the metal halide fixtures for their performance and good color rendering. Talk to Aaron about using forward throw fixtures to minimize the glare.
