Hello. I was hoping that someone might be able to assist me. I recently just purchased 2 Thomas Kinkaide paintings. They are Holiday gathering and Disneyland 50th Anniversary. As you may already know, Thomas Kinkaide is known as the painter of light and many of his paintings are designed to be seen with multiple effects as long as you have the proper lighting. I would like to duplicate in my home, that same studio effect that brought me to buy both of these paintings. Can you please recommend the proper lighting distance etc for these 2 paintings? I will be more than happy to supply you with more details so I can determine the best lighting products to purchase. Thank you!
Congratulations on your purchase of two Thomas Kinkade works. I have always admired his works and particulars his use of light in the subject matter.
Most galleries use a strong halogen light source to showcase there art. Halogen has good color rendering and can be dimmed to get just the right level of light.
We have a couple of ART LIGHTING FIXTURES that may be of instructs to you.
HALO 1499RT/1420P ACCENT LIGHT
PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR
Both of these lights use a halogen source. Other than cost, the main difference is the ability to shape the light to fit the exact contour of the art without spill light on the wall. This will give you a lighted from within look that is just spectacular.

How deep are typical conduits that house the wires that provide power to these units when they are near grass, landscaping and trees that are 40 feet tall? Thanks
How deep you install the conduits is specified by the National Electrical Code. For schedule 40 PVC conduit and UF CABLE you must bury it a minimum of 18". For galvanized rigid conduit, you can go as shallow as 6" below the surface.
So if you are hand digging around tree roots it is must better to use the metal conduit. Much less stress to the trees and to the landscaping.

Can I mount my 250 W outdoor transformer in the garage, if it is connected to a GFCI receptacle? If not, why, and is there anything I can do to enclose it so it can be mounted in the garage?Thank you very much!
As long as you provide plenty of air space around the transformer for cooling, you should be fine. The issue is not the transformer it is how you get the wire from the garage to the landscape lighting.
LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING CABLE is not rated by the electrical code for installation through a wall without a conduit or pipe However, people do it all the time.

Do you have a diagram that shows the back of this light? I need to know how it will mount so I can determine if we can use it. Thanks!
We do not have a diagram or illustration of the back to send you. The HADCO SLRL2U is mounts directly to the wall with screws. It is not designed to cover a standard electrical junction box. Sine the fixture is low voltage, the wires are just spliced behind the fixture using wirenuts.
This is a great little step light because it produces very little glare from normal viewing angles. Have you see the FOCUS SL07 in brass? This is a very popular STEP LIGHT. If you are looking for something with a junction box, check out the FOCUS SL30.

Hi, first of all thanks for all the useful information on your site, I have found it extremely helpful. I''m interested in lighting the base of an oak in my garden. Due to the situation of the tree I have to mount the light directly to the trunk. I have read on your ''ask the experts'' archive, that stainless steel screws are tree friendly and wont damage the tree in any way. Can you please confirm that this is correct as the tree has a tree preservation order (I'm based in the UK) and cannot be damaged. Thanks in advance.
I am pleased that you find our landscape information interesting and helpful. Thank you for your kind words
Anytime you mount a light fixture to a tree it is considered a risk. The stainless steel screws are the best to mount lights as they do not rust. Our TREE MOUNT KIT contains the bolts, nuts, mounting plate and back plate.
Depending on the limb structure of the tree you can use either a BULLET STYLE UP LIGHTS or a BOX STYLE UP LIGHT for more intensity and coverage. On the box flood you will want the 4-sided bug shield option for glare controls.

I currently design and install low volt landscape lighting. I am interested in installing line voltage systems, but I can't seem to find any books on the topic. I am a licensed electrician and I understand the NEC. What I am interested in is design, and the photometrics of mercury vapor, metal halide etc. landscape lighting products. Thanks
There are several books at Barnes and Nobles that I have seen on exterior landscape lighting. I learned myself by the old fashion way; making mistakes. In no time, you become an expert on the subject.
I personally prefer MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTING FIXTURES for moonlighting or up lighting specimen trees.
For down lighting, here are my rules:
Under 20' high go with a 50 WATT DOWN LIGHT
20 to 30' high go with a 100 WATT DOWN LIGHT
30 to 40' high go with a 175 WATT DOWN LIGHT
For up lighting, use the same rules:
Under 20' high go with a 50 WATT UP LIGHT
20 to 30' high go with a 100 WATT UP LIGHT
30 to 40' high go with a 175 WATT UP LIGHT
For large Palm trees I like to use the 175 WATT METAL HALIDE UP LIGHT with the spot lamp and hub mount option.
We are glad to help you design and specify LANDSCAPE LIGHTING EQUIPMENT for your jobs as a courtesy to you. You should buy a few different lights and experiment in your own yard. Landscape lighting is an art form, not a science. Landscape lighting is fun and very rewarding!

First of all you are looking at a
MECHANICAL TIME CLOCK and not a
LOW VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER WITH A BUILT IN TIMER.
To operate a low voltage lighting system you need a low voltage or 12 volt transformer. The timer just turns it on and off.
How far you can you run the lights depends on the wire size and the total wattage of the lights. I would suggest that you take a look at our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING information page for a complete overview.
For your convenience, we have assembled LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS IN A BOX for just about any size job. They are easy to install and will give you years of nighttime enjoyment.

The most common way to override the motion detector is to turn the switch on and off several times rapidly. This should put the

I need to know if I install a RAB MH floodlight on the ground shining up will it provide enough light to illuminate a 22'' high Palm tree?
Yes, this LUMARK METAL HALIDE FIXTURE can illuminate your Palm tree. However, it will produce a tremendous amount of glare. You should consider using a METAL HALIDE BULLET STYLE UP LIGHT which has more control and a better beam pattern for landscape lighting. I HAVE 6 KICHLER 35W SPOT LIGHTS AND 20 11W PATH LIGHTS WHAT SIZE TRANSFORMER DO I NEED AND DO I NEED DUAL TERMINALS? I HAVE A TOTAL OF AROUND 150 FEET OF WIRE TO RUN . ALSO WHAT GAGE WIRE SHOULD I USE AND DO YOU SELL THE TRANSFORMER I WOULD NEED THAT COMES WITH A TIMER? THANKS!!! P.S. ON THE SPOT LIGHTS (KICHLER)IT STATES ON THE BOX 300 WATT MAXIMUM TRANSFORMER (25 AMP)
You will need a 600-WATT TRANSFORMER to run your Kichler lighting system. We do have many transformers with timers for you to choose from. The TECHLIGHT LVE600MT is the least expensive we have posted. Please take a look at our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM PAGE for wiring illustrations.
OK, let's do the math on your lighting system.
35w x 6 = 210 watts
11w x 20 = 220 watts
That's a total wattage of 430 watts and a total amperage of 36 amps.
You will need to split that up into two home runs using 12/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE back to the transformer not exceeding 215 watts per run or 18 amps per wire.

I have track lighting in my kitchen. About three or four days ago, they started to have problems. After being on for 10-15 minutes, they will turn themselves off for a second, then come back on, and on occasion, they will stay off even longer. The light switch is always in the on position, and there is only one switch. I have a Lightech Let 151 transformer, and I''m pretty sure I can hear it buzzing when the lights come back on. I''VA already tried changing the light switch, to no avail. Is this a problem with the transformer?
Transformers have thermal protector devices built into them to prevent overheating. So when they overheat they switch off and when they cool they turn back on.
I would check the wattage of your light bulbs to see that you have not exceeded the capacity of the transformer. This would certainly cause the problem.
Thank you for contacting Residential Landscape Lighting & Design with your TRACK LIGHTING question. We are here to help, so give us a call at 800-239-2939 if you need a replacement ELECTRONIC TRANSFORMER or to consider other lighting options.

I'm a journeyman electrician, and I've seen/replaced plenty dimmer switches which have shorted out, worn out, smoked, etc. - My experience is that the slide-switch goes out more rapidly than the rheostat-turning dial one. My teachers in Israel said that it''s best to turn the dimmer switch down, then off, for the dial-switch, but at that time there was no slide dimmer-switch. Here, in my apprenticeship I never heard mention of the problem, but I replaced lots of them during this apprenticeship, too. What's your take on slide vs rotor switches, and is there a more safe way for turning them off? Is there a liquid switch for dimming which is safer and less likely to burn up? Thanks for whatever advice and information you can give me! Sincerely
I have not heard of problems like that with slide or rotary DIMMER CONTROLS. Most dimmer switch failures occur due to exceeding the capacity of the dimmer, not matching the load to the type of dimmer or overheating due to failure to DERATE DIMMERS when ganged with others.
LUTRON DIMMER SWITCHES are some of the finest dimmer controls on the market. They make devices for just about every application and load type.

I just received my order of ten focus brass hanging cylinder lights. I intend to hang them from trees going up an 80 step staircase to the house. I assumed the lights would come with directions. Could you send me information or direct me to a website on how to install the lights (connect them to a common wire/timer etc)? Thank you.
Thank you for your recent order and I will most certainly assist you in the best way to install your new FOCUS LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FIXTURES.
Low voltage lighting is really quite easy to design and install if you know the basics. Check out our information pages listed below for helpful tips and recommendations:
HOW TO DESIGN 12 VOLT LIGHTING Part #1
HOW TO DESIGN 12 VOLT LIGHTING Part #2
CALCULATING VOLTAGE DROP
The low voltage lighting system starts with a LIGHTING TRANSFORMER. The transformer should be centrally located in the system and wiring should be done as per the instructions in the above links.
Keep the wire small, like 16/2 from the HANGING LIGHT FIXTURES back to the tree limb and then increase the wire size to 12/2 or larger depending on the load and distance back to the transformer.
Sounds like a great project and a perfect application of low voltage hanging lights. Send us some pictures of the finished project and we will post them on our website www.rlldesign.com.

I was reviewing your wall pack conversion table and am not sure what it is telling me.The image appears to reflect the text on the left which states this is the foot candle array at 8'' height at a spacing of 6 to 1 and 2 mounting heights in front. How do I use the chart? It appears this is for the 50watt bulb and if I move the height up then my foot candle is the stated factor multiplied by the foot candles on the print. What about the text on the right for the 70Watt light? It mentions 3 heights in front, but the drawing only shows 2. Can you clarify for me. Thanks!
Thanks for the question. Rather than go through some long winded technical explanation on WALL PACKS, I think it would be better if you faxed a drawing of the area you are lighting. Send it to Jeremy's attention toll free at 877-272-0577.

Which type of bulb (fluorescent, halogen, incandescent) is best for a make up area with no natural light?
Actually, the best makeup lighting is a combination of all three light sources. Obviously, this would not be practical in your home. However, quality free standing make up mirrors have adjustable filters which shift the color of light to match the light source of choice.
Makeup should always be checked, and if possible even applied, under the lighting that similar to your environment. For example, if you are dressing for work, you may want to adjust your makeup to look good under a fluorescent lighting source. This consideration is particularly important with fluorescent light because these lights tend to be low in red light and high in green. Since normal skin tones contain a significant amount of green to start with, you may note obvious green skin tones under fluorescent light. The problem may be compounded if the makeup, itself, has green elements.
Position of the VANITY LIGHTS can be just important as the color of the light or makeup. Harsh shadows and the inability to see details on your face can distort how you apply your makeup. That is why makeup mirrors, used in combination with other light sources in the bathroom are always the best for frontal lighting and when you lack natural daylight.

I am planning to add ceiling fixtures to make an office from what was a formal living room. I need a LOT of lumens in my office so I want to use many fixtures. I want to know how to decide between line voltage and low voltage fixtures. How do the bulb life, color rendition, heat output, energy efficiency compare? I would suggest that you go with RECESSED DOWN LIGHTS in the ceiling for general lighting. LOW VOLTAGE RECESSED LIGHTS do have less glare and are really designed for illuminating objects, not people. Low voltage down lighting fixtures in pairs do work well for spotting over a desk.
Take a look at our HALO H&RT/410P with a 120-watt incandescent flood lamp. Without seeing your floorplan it's hard for me to make specific recommendations. However, if you want good uniform illumination space the lights about 8' apart in a grid. Used in combination with a DIMMER CONTROL SWITCH you will have excellent general lighting. You could also consider using fluorescent recessed lighting fixtures if heat is a problem.
