If you use the LUTRON MAESTRO DIMMER CONTROLS you can most certainly dim the lights from both ends. One end has the MAESTRO DIMMER CONTROL and the other has a MAESTRO SMART REMOTE CONTROL.

Hi We have a chandelier with a switch at the bottom of the stairs and at the top of the stairs. I'd like to put a dimmer on this if it's possible? The switches in the wall now have three wires running to them. The only dimmer I can get here has places for two wires. Will this work? Please don't tell me use the red or white wire. All the wires in the house are black. This is Mexico. Thanks
You will need to use a THREE WAY DIMMER CONTROL to allow for controlling the lights at both ends. You have to identify the hot wire first, and then the others are called travelers. The travelers connect to the red wires on the dimmer. If you get the conmination wrong, the lights will only work from one end. The colors don't really matter as long as yo identify the hot wire first. I would cal an electrician if you are concerned about the wiring.

We are considering the Fantech line of remote exhaust fans as well as a Panasonic Exhaust fan. We are considering one of thise 2 choices.Our concerns are noise and backdraft.I hear the Panasonic is quiet, but, does it prevent backdraft as well as the fantech? What is your recommendation? (I also understand if the Fantech is used in may rooms, that sound from other rooms gets piped around the house to other rooms connected to the fan

PANASONIC EXHAUST FANS are some of the best made fans and quietest fans on the market. The Panasonic fans do have backdraft doors to prevent unwanted air or energy loss.
I am not familiar with the other fan you are consdidering or the problems with sound issues you are raising.

We want to install track lighting in our living room. The only colors I could find was white and black. We ultimately bought black but now want to paint the fixture brown to match the kitchen and dining room track lighting . What kind of paint can I use? Must it be heat resistant or can I use ordinary enamel? Thank you.
Depending on the wattage of the fixtures, enamel will most likely work fine. If the fixtures are over 100 watts, I would consider a high heat paint. Either way, it is the light colors that turn brown from the heat. So if you are going brown, don't worry.

I would like to install a motion sensor to control a fan in a 12' x12' horse stall. I want the fan to come on when the horse is in the stall and turn off when she leaves- night and day. Will the LS300 do this? Thanks

We have completed the 200 ft x 120 ft outdoor riding arena and would like recommendations for the lighting fixtures needed. We are considering the TRACKKIT02, but are having a hard time determining if should use the 400W or the 1000W set. We have 2 poles down each long side. The poles are 30 ft, buried 4'' deep. Thank you. The 400-watt lights are more than adequate for casual nightime riding. If you are holding competitions or special events you should go with the 1000 watt fixtures. It is always better to be too bright than to not have enough light to see.

I am interested in the four-light Liebetraum chandelier for my entry. I have 8 foot ceilings. The current light hangs 19" and is fine. The height on the Liebestraum is 17" - what else do I need to account for? I want to make sure that it works in my entry - thanks.

I installed a door jamb switch and it only works intermittently with a fluorescent light in my pantry. Is there a special door jamb switch for for fluorescent lights? Or should any door jamb switch work with fluorescent lights? (It uses line voltage.)
Your DOOR JAMB SWITCH is designed to work with both incandescent and fluorescent lighting fixtures. It's not the switch, it's the light fixture.
Incandescent light sources can be turned on and off repeatedly without any problems because they are have a filament inside the lamp and are considered an instantaneous light source.
Fluorescent light are more complex. They are gas filled lamps which require a ballast to excite the gas, causing it to light up. They are not designed to be turned on and off repeatedly. Sorry to give you the bad news.
If the ends of your fluorescent lamps are blackened, it is time to change your light bulbs. This will help your light to operate properly.

I want to update my light fixtures in my home and that can be a little expensive when you''re wanting them all replaced. My question to you is, would spray painting them work? If so, what is the best paint to use for this kind of work? I would appreciate any info. Thank you!
You can spray your LIGHT TRIMS with high heat paint from an automotive store to freshen them up. Depending on the type of housing you have in the ceiling, it may be fairly cheap to install new trims.
If you have a basic white can, such as a HALO H7 HOUSING or equivalent the trims are supported by small springs that hold them in place. HALO LIGHT TRIMS are very inexpensive and can be used in similar housings by other manufacturers. If you have a more sophisticated RECESSED HOUSING, you may want to just go a head and paint them.

Wish to illuminate painting 73" wide x 20" high. The floor is 68" below lower corner of painting. The ceiling is 15' up from the art. What equip. do I need and where do I locate ceiling unit in relation to art?

I am planning on putting pathway lighting on either side of my driveway. What are the pros and cons of the above mentioned subject.Any help would be greatly appreciated.martin PATH LIGHTS can be quite effective as a light source around driveways, sidewalks and stairs if used properly. If you have flower bed, shrubs or rocks to partial conceal the lights or prevent them from being damaged this is great. However, if they are just stuck in the lawn, chances are they will get broken by kids, lawnmowers and people just tripping over them. Not to mention, someone backing over them.
You might consider also using a BOLLARD style light fixture that is taller and less likely to get damaged. It will also take fewer bollard lights to do the job.

I have a Hunter ceiling fan and want to add a speed control if I can. Do your Lutron fan speed controls work on Hunter fans?
LUTRON FAN SPEED CONTROLS are designed on most ceiling fans including Hunter, Casa Blanca, Westinghouse, Concord and other name brand fans. Some speed controls are made for one fan and others can handle more than one fan.

I was in the process of installing a ceiling fan in my daughter's room when I noticed she has a plastic box. The instructions say that you must use a metal box that is approved for ceiling fans. I am not really interested in tearing up the ceiling or turning this into a huge project. What can a guy do to safely hang the fan?

CEILING FAN HANGER BARS for dummies. Seriously, they have a special bracket that will replace the plastic box with a sturdy metal mount and you don't have to tear up the ceiling. There are several other styles if this is not the one you need.

My builder and I have a disagreement over a bathroom ventilation system for my new home. He wants to install exhaust fans in every bathroom and I want to set up a central ventilation system using a remote duct mount fan motor. Do you have any thoughts?
Installing a
REMOTE DUCT MOUNT EXHAUST FAN is a the Cadillac of exhaust systems. That is because you have to set up a large duct that will channel the unwanted air or moisture from several bathrooms to the outside of the house, which can be expensive.
Having said that, I think it is still a great idea to consider this exhaust method over individual fans. I think it is quieter and more efficient to pull the air, rather than push the air.

I have a storage shed out in my backyard that has electrical power, but no exterior light. So when I go out at night it is hard to get the door unlocked because I can't see. Do you have any small flourescent or halogen light fixtures lights that come with motion sensors? I really don't want to draw attention to the shed under normal circumstances.

We are building a new house, and want to install
soffit lights. We are going to use 4" housings, and want to know what spacing we should use.
Installing soffit lighting is a great way to show off the architectural details of your new home and well as provide security lighting. Spacing should be dictated by the features of the house you want to highlight or symmetrically for balance from the street view. For example, centered on windows, arches, doorways, and entrance. You should decide fairly quickly as to your design, so the carpenters can layout the roof rafters to accommodate your lighting.
We have some very small RECESSED LIGHTS that are perfect for soffit lighting. Have your electrician install a REMOTE DIMMER CONTROL in a closet or attic as well as a photocell outside to automatically switch the lighting.

We are installing
under cabinet lighting but am not sure how much light per linear foot we should expect to install.
We are looking to light under the cabinets onto a dark granite (green or black)
counter top. Any general recommendations would be appreciated.
Darker color counter tops, such as granite, tend to produce reflected images of the light source which can be objectionable. However, you just have to live with it because it is difficult if not impossible to completely hide the reflections from normal viewing angles, without reducing light output or coverage.
Most fluorescent, xenon or halogen light fixtures designed for under cabinet lighting produce sufficient light levels for task lighting, regardless of the counter top color. They key to successful kitchen lighting, is uniformity and the ability to dim the lights for mood setting. So that eliminates fluorescent lighting for now.
I would take a look at our XENON LIGHTING FIXTURES and HALOGEN LIGHT FIXTURES as a possible consideration. Position the lights where you do your work, or continuously for best illumination.

I would like to
hard wire one xenon light unit into the wall, then link 4 additional xenon fixtures. The longest span between any two xenon fixtures will be roughly 10 feet. Is this possible? Can I link the xenon fixtures using standard Romex® wire or do I need something special for low voltage lighting fixtures?
Yes, you can link XENON LIGHTS using Romex® wire as long as you do not exceed the capacity of the wire. In fact Romex® is exactly what is required for residential applications for concealed wiring, to meet most electrical codes.
If your fixtures requires a remote TRANSFORMER, you should install one Romex® wire from each xenon light directly back to the 12 volt transformer. This is called HOME RUN wiring and it will prevent voltage drop problems or differences in the light output between fixtures.
If your XENON LIGHT STRIPS have built-in transformers, there will be no reason that you can't just link them together using Romex® wire.

Some electrical work has been done to my house, when I noticed that on the same (20 ampere) circuit, beside the bathroom receptacle outlet (GFI) the kitchen counter top receptacles were connected, normally used for small-appliances. I do believe that the connections can overload the circuit when a toaster oven is used in the kitchen and a hair drier in the bathroom. The town electric inspector approved the job , but I still believe that the connections are faulty
You are right. However, the situation is not faulty, it's unfortunate and the inspector should have know better. It is common practice to provide dedicated circuits to both bathroom and kitchen circuits. For example, you should have a dedicated circuit for the following kitchen appliances: Microwave, disposal, refrigerator, GFCI receptacles and lighting. Depending on the construction of your home, it may be possible to split up the circuits without significant damage to the house. I would contact the original electrician and ask him to what your options are. Otherwise, you are right about the breaker tripping when everything is on at one time.

I want to install under cabinet lights in my new kitchen. Cabinets are cherry cider wood and black granite counter tops. Which type of light do you suggest is the best for this area? I don''t like
fluorescent because of the inconsistency, but am afraid that halogen bulbs
would become too hot against the underside of the wood cabinets. What do you suggest?
You might take a look at the XENON & HALOGEN KITCHEN LIGHTS we have from American Lighting. They are good looking fixtures that can be dimmed for mood setting. Heat should no be a problem for the wood as these fixtures are made in metal and carry a UL approval. I have them in my house and they look beautiful.

I plan to install Xenon Galvanized Light Trim HM 24" above my kitchen counters for task lighting. Please recommend light spacing (4" or 6") and wattage.
I like the PHANTOM HM SERIES six inch on center with ten watt frosted xenon lamps. That is the equivalent of 20 watts per linear foot. It is always best to install a MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL for the strip lights to adjust the light levels.

I just discovered that the 10 recessed can housings I purchased have electronic transformers in them. I have a
Grafik Eye 3106 I plan to control these with. Will I need the
ELVI interface for them to work? If so, do I need one
ELVI per zone with this load? Finally, if I do need one per zone, can you recommend different 2" recessed cans that will work directly with the GE (as replacing those may be cheaper than the interfaces). Thanks for any help you can provide.
You would need one GRAFIK EYE ELECTRONIC INTERFACE for each switched zone. If you go magnetic transformers or line voltage you will not need to modify your system. You will have to change the load type in the program mode to accommodate your light source.

I have a seafood
restaurant in Sabine Pass that has some existing
goose neck lights on the front of the building. The are rusted terribly and need replacing. Do you sell these style lights in a galvanized metal finish or just painted?

In a design magazine there was a reference to a strip light activated by a motion detector installed in the toe kick of the bathroom vanity--when you enter the bathroom in the dark it serves as an automatic night light. I'm about to install a 66" vanity in my kid's bathroom and am interested in doing this--can you advise me? What would I need to purchase? Thanks a million!
You have a couple way to automate your toe kick lighting using ROPE LIGHTS in the kid''s bathroom.
The RAB SMART SWITCH LOS2400 is a ceiling mounted control that would work well. The other option is a RAB SSD MOTION DETECTOR SWITCH that could be mounted horizontally in the toe kick or low on the wall as long as the device was not obstructed.
You should consult your electrician as to the best approach for your situation. We have these parts in stock should you need them quickly. Either way, you should use a GFCI RECEPTACLE, since it is in a bathroom.

I have a 75' x 42' x 22' high hanger. This hanger is going to be used by an AME. I would like to hang 3 lights (not
fluorescent) to illuminate the hanger. Any Suggestions?
This is a perfect application for HIGH BAY HID LIGHTING FIXTURES. It will take more than three fixtures to adequately illuminate the hanger. I would suggest that you install six fixtures at least, and maybe eight for higher light levels. I would go with the TECH LIGHT TH22M 350-WATT METAL HALIDE FIXTURE.

I am installing recessed Lighting in church that is 37' wide x 70' long. The ceiling is 15' at center, 10' along side. Could you tell me, how many, and what type of
incandescent lighting would be best?
Assuming that you do not have exposed beams that conflict and the ceiling joists are working in your favor, I would suggest the following RECESSED LIGHTS for general lighting of the church.
The HALO RECESSED SLOPED DOWN LIGHT is a good choice for direct contact with insulation and for use on a sloped ceiling. I would use a 120-watt halogen PAR38 wide flood lamp and for a softer look, you might try the 120-watt incandescent R40 lamp. You should run two rows of recessed lights centered down the length of the church spaced approximately twelve to fifteen feet apart.
You will also need a LUTRON 2000W NOVA T DIMMER CONTROL for adjusting the light levels.

I am trying to locate some clear 12 volt mini bulbs for a tree topper star. The star came with amber lights and I prefer the clear ones. I have some clear bulbs which are only 4 volts each and therefore don't provide as bright a light. If you don't have any 12 volt bulbs, can you suggest where I might find these. I have checked both with the store where the star was purchased (Smith &
Hawken) and their company customer service. Neither can help me.Thank you.
Rather than replacing the individual light bulb, you might consider just replacing the actual string of lights in the star. Every CHRISTMAS LIGHT SET have fuses in the cord cap that are designed to prevent overloads and short circuits. I am afraid that if you do find the brighter lamps that you may be disappointed with the outcome.

I am interested in the following switches: Edwards - Door Jamb Switch
EDW45, however I want to make sure that when the door is closed the light is off, and when the door opens the light turns on. Also can I use this with a 75 watt bulb on a 15 Amp circuit? Please advise
The EDWARDS 45 jamb switch is a low voltage switch that must be used in conjunction with a transformer and lighting contractor. It is only rated for 48 volts.
For controlling one closet light, I would go with the EDWARDS EDW502A jamb switch which is designed for 120 volt use. It is slightly larger in size, but can be painted to match the door jamb. It is also much easier to install.

We want to hang wall scones on each side of a fireplace in our living room. What is the recommended height?
The mounting height depends on the type of WALL SCONCE you have selected. Wall sconces come in three varieties: Upswept, Downswept and Center mount. Typically, wall sconces are mounted at roughly five foot six inches above the finished floor. Or in other words, at eye level. It is always a good idea to hold up you WALL SCONCE to verify the actual mounting location.
