I am trying to incorporate sconces into my headboard design. living in an apartment i am not allowed to hardwire them. i also would like to install a dimmer switch for each of the two. i would then need to wire them to an outlet plug. i would just like to know if this can be done and the right way to do it.
Your best bet is to purchase some SWING ARM LAMPS that have built in dimmer controls. Since you are renting, make it simple!

I have a customer who wants a dimmable 4-bulb flourescent fixture installed inside of a stained-glass enclosure in her kitchen (mounted to the ceiling). I need a package that includes the fixture (4-bulb T8 or T12 40 watt (or close), 120V dimmer switch, and dimmable ballasts. I see the ballasts on your web site, as well as the controller. I don''t see the type of fixture to purchase, and would really like it all as a package if you sell it that way. Any ideas?(I''m an electrical contractor).
Sure, we have a LUTRON dimming fluorescent ballast solution for you. Unfortunately, we do not have every ballast and lamp option posted at this time. Please give Gabriella at call at 800-239-2939 during normal business hours and she will be glad to quote your project.

Can you tell me the difference between C7 & C9 sockets. I am looking to purchase a large quantity of sockets And bulbs but I am looking for the ones that have a larger base than the candleabra base I believe it is the C9 but I am not sure. Do you carry the round red globes to fit the C9 bases.
C7 LAMPS are considered candelabra based lamps. C9 LAMPS have intermediate bases, which are the larger of the two lamps.
We have 7.5 watt RED GLOBE LIGHTS with a candelabra base.
WE have 10-watt RED GLOBE LIGHTS with intermediate bases as well.

My circuit breaker that feeds my Low Voltage lights on the outside trips all the time. I can reset it and it is OK for a few days but then it trips. My transformer is pluged into a GFCI outlet. This never has tripped, but the breaker feeding it does. How does the breaker trip without tripping the GFCI.
Here''s the deal! You have too many lights on the circuit or a short in the low voltage wiring that is causing your problem with the breaker. If the transformer fails, the GFCI will most certainly trip.
Do you have access to an amprobe to check the readings? If not, take the total wattage of the lamps and divide by 12 volts. That will give you the total amperage and compare that against the breaker size. 12/2 wire is good for 20 amps. 10/2 wire is good for 30 amps. We have a great selection of TRANSFORMERS should you be interested in upgrading.
Good luck and happy holidays to you and your family.

I have a pre-lit tree with 1500 2.5v clear mini lights. How can I install a dimmer? I tried 300w Lutron lamp dimmer and it overheated and tripped off.
You will have to make a custom dimmer box for that kind of load. Start with a two gang plastic electrical switch box and install a 1000 WATT LUTRON ARIADNI DIMMER CONTROL in conjunction with a standard duplex receptacle. You will also need a 14/3 grounded extension cord to plug into the wall. That should do it.
The other option is to install the dimmer in the wall adjacent to the existing receptacle, provided you put the tree in the same spot every year.
Merry Christmas!

Can you help me with a problem? One of my one year old wallpack security lights is working intermittently at night. On and off all night long. It is driving me crazy. What do I need to do? Thanks
There are a couple of reasons that your WALLPACK is cycling. The first thing I would check is the photocell control. Sometimes reflected light from the exterior flood or other lights in the vacinity may cause the device to sense light and turn off. If that is not the problem, replace the lamp.
The majority of lights that blink on and off are simply bad lamps. Sometimes it''s the ballast or ignitor. If you have more than one wallpack, swap the light bulbs and see if the problem still exists. This not only checks the light bulb, but also the ballst at the same time.
Hope this information is sufficient for you to solve your problem. Please let us know if you need a new WALL PACK, REPLACEMENT LAMP or REPLACEMENT BALLAST. We have all three in stock!

I am interested in low-voltage landscape up- lighting in the 35W to 50W range to be installed in my front beds and shine up on the house. It looks like you have several good choices, but I would like something that allows me to change colors for the holidays (Red/Green). I did not see this option in low-voltage lighting. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
Sounds like one of our PRE-PACKAGED MR16 OUTDOOR LIGHTING KITS is just what you are looking for. We have MR16 COLORED LENSES that would be prefect for special occasions. The kits come with 20-watt lamps, so just ask them to give you a free upgrade to 35 watt flood lamps.
If you order soon, you can have the lights just in time for the holidays. Thanks for your interest in Residential Landscape Lighting & Design.

We use rope lighting in our commercial store for the windows. The previous track turned brown-burned in color.I noticed that you have tracks and I was wondering if that is safe in a commercial application. The lights are on 24/7.or...should I consider another lighting source? Thanks!
All plastic mounting tracks eventually brown and crack from continuous exposure to heat and UV rays. Having siad that, I don''t see any problems using the rope lights 24/7. I would just change the MOUNTING TRACKS and maybe consider the new LED ROPE LIGHTS because they are very long lasting and produce very little heat. We also have CHASING ROPE LIGHT if you want something a little more flashy! Please note the size of your light rope (1/2" or 3/8") before ordering as we have both sizes in stock.
Thank you for the question and we look forward to serving you in the future. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

I'm looking to use about 8 feet of clear rope light which would be integrated with a magnetic door sensor. When the door is opened, the lights would come on. How can I accomplish this? Do you have jamb switches? Specifically, how is the magnetic sensor wired to the rope light?
That's easy. You need a 12 VOLT TRANSFORMER, an EDWARDS DOOR JAMB SWITCH and a 8'' section of 12 V ROPE LIGHT.
You will need to run 120-volt power to the transformer on the primary side and then install the switch on the secondary side of the transformer going to the light. The switch simply breaks the power going to the light. It's that simple.
Sounds like a fun project. Good luck!

I need to light a 130' x 65' indoor horse arena. The lights will mount from the ceiling at about 20' height. I would prefer to minimize shadows as much as possible. The room has a sand floor and dust is not really a factor. The circuit I have is 220 volts.
I would suggest installing (12) 350-WATT METAL HALIDE HIGH BAY FIXTURES in two rows equally spaced down the arena. Metal halide produces a very nice white light and shadows should not be an issue if you go with these commercial grade lighting fixtures. Please give Aaron a call should you need further assistance with fixture selection or ordering information.

How can I hang Christmas lights from a roof gutter that is covered with a gutter screen? My husband wants to keep the screen in the gutter to keep the leaves out, and the light hanging clips I bought work only on screenless gutters. Thanks
Well... I would pick up some small S-hooks at a local hardware store and hang the lights off the screen itself. You can also use small electical tie-wraps in the same fashion to support the lights. You can find the tie-wraps in the electrical section of a Home Depot or Lowes. They come in many colors and sizes.

Have a landscape lighting project comming up that would require running 4 or 5 runs of landscape wire though a basement wall and over to the multiple tap transformer, can the wires come through to the inside in conduit and then run bare like romex to the transformer. Thanks
I am not sure it will officially pass code, but it should be alright. As long as you do not exceed the capacity of your DIRECT BURIAL CABLE I don''t see any reason why not. Keep in mind that OUTDOOR LIGHTING TRANSFORMERS are not rated for indoor use. However, they will work fine as long as you provide plenty or air circulation around the transformer for cooling and use a GFCI protected outlet.
I hope that you will visit our OUTDOOR LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING STORE when ordering your lighting fixtures, wire and transformer.
Thank you!

I recently removed a wall-mounted light fixture. However, there is now a hot black wire and a white wire that is simply dead ended in the electric box. What do I do with these wires? I covered them with electrical tape and left them back in the box. Is this safe? I turned the circuit breaker back on, because there is an important radon fan on the same circuit breaker.
I am assuming that this wire is in a metal or plastic junction box. If so, just install a blank cover and you will be fine. If not, disconnect the switch feeding the abandoned wire and that will eliminate any cause for concern. It is always a good idea to use electrical tape or wire nuts to terminate the wire.
If you decide to ever install a new OUTDOOR WALL LANTERN, we have a great selection.

Last year I bought some green mini lights I need to match. problem is, the bulbs are larger than most commercial light sets. How long are your bulbs? I need to match them.
You would not only have to match the length, but also the wattage and operating voltage of each lamp. This varies by manufacturer. All SEASONAL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS are wired in series and so having that informatuion is critical. That information can generally be found on the label attatched to the lights near the male plug. Once you have that infotrmation, I should be able to help you.

We have several strands of icicle lights that every third icicle will not light. How can we fix them?
All CHRISTMAS STRING LIGHTS, NET LIGHTS and ICICLE LIGHTS are wired in series. That means that multiple light bulbs are hooked together to operate at 120 volts. So if you have a pattern of lights that is not working, one or more lamps has failed. You can purchase a lamp checker to find the culprit or take a working lamp and one by one replace each one in the string until you find the bad one.
Of course, you can always purchase some new ICICLE LIGHTS and make your life easy.

I have a dozen 12v pathlights, and need to replace the bulbs, sockets in many. Each socket is a boyonet single contact with a 12v 12watt lamp. The socket is swaged to an l bracket which screws into the interior of the fixture. A pigtail goes down through the central pipe about 18 inches or less. I''m wondering if these sockets are still available, or, could I replace the bulbs and sockets with halogen about the same wattage? I can''t find the sockets at auto supplies, dixieline, home depot, or on the web. I''d prefer to repair the fixtures rather than replace them. They are a two tier pagoda style with a central "jar" open on the bottom with a hemispheric top, about 3.25 inches in diameter, and about 5 inches tall The bottom is threaded. the fixtures are aluminum. Help? Thanks
Well, you might have to get creative to replace these sockets. You can do it. We have some Single Contact Sockets with mounting Bracket - SKT T11 that are close to what you have described. You might have to use a end butt connector to extend the positive wire and use the fixture body or run a new wire for the other lead wire.
The Single Contact Socket Base - TEC MPLS is another low voltage socket that might work for you. It is designed to fit in a 1/2" knockout hole. It has two wires that are long enough to fit your stem. You would have to fabricate a bracket or silicone the socket in place.

Good afternoon.I had 4 Halo H5ICAT fixtures installed in my living room during construction. The ceiling and walls are now sealed, but I would like to add 2 more for more light. Does Halo make a fixture comparable to the H5ICAT for existing ceilings as opposed to new construction? Thanks, Anthony
Yes, HALO LIGHTING makes a H5RICAT remodel housing for installations where the housing will be in direct contact with ceiling insulation. Integral thermal protector provides positive protection against over-lamping. The H5RICAT can be installed from below the ceiling. Air-tite housing prevents airflow between attic and living areas. I need a LUTRON 2000 watt Dimmer Switch for some incandescent lights in my office boardroom. Do they make a 2000 watt dimmer switch and what are my options?
OK, you have two options:
For a wallbox solution, Lutron has a Nova NT2000 dimmer control that goes up to 2000 watts. The other option is to use any Lutron wallbox dimmer in conjunction with a Lutron Power Booster. You will need a dedicated 20 amp circuit run to the booster. We have both Lutron devices should you decide to order.
Thanks!

Background:I have a contractor who pre-wired 12/2 direct burial cable for step lights adjacent to my pool deck. The run is approx 150''-200''. The single homerun load consists of 24 7w 12v steplights. I have a 3-tap 900w transformer that has 3 300w output taps. The light string is overloaded and buried in concrete now.Question (1):Can I purchase one of your 600w multi-tap transformers and use the higher voltage output taps to resolve the voltage drop issue?Question: (2):Does your 600w multi-tap transformer have 1 600w output with different voltage taps (or) does it consist of 2 300w outputs with different voltage taps.Question: (3):I am wondering if 15v @ 600w would be the right combination to brighten my "very dim" step lights?
Ouch, you do have a problem. Your contractor should have used conduits for running the wires under concrete for this very reason. Just be glad the wire was not cut during the pour!
Buying a multi-tap transformer will allow you to boost the voltage which will significantly improve your situation. The real problem is that you only have one wire! Can you get to the last fixture and run a new wire back to the transformer? If so, that will allow you to feed from both ends in a continuous loop.
If my math is right, you only have 12 x 7 = 168 watts of light. You don''t need a bigger transformer, you just need something that will produce a higher voltage. Our TECHLIGHT LV300-T is a very good solution.
Send the contractor the bill!

Residential Landscape Lighting & Design (RLLD) is a true masterpiece of the art of "findability." No matter where you begin, if you are searching for lighting fixtures for your home, garden or business, all roads seem to lead here. When typing a search phrase into Google, RLLD consistently appears on the first page of results whether your term is as broad as "landscape lighting," or as specific as "low voltage underwater lights." RLLD's seemingly ubiquitous presence on the web is not due to any trickery, nor is it the result of heavy investments into paid advertising. RLLD's impressive rankings in all major search engines is a direct result of the extensiveness of its product selection, the volume of educational content, and the ease with which all of its information can be found--by humans and search engines alike.
RLLD offers thousands of lighting products which are designed for use in a wide range of applications. If it emits light, RLLD sells it--from table lamps to commercial parking lot poles! The product selection is divided into nine basic categories: Landscape & Outdoor Lighting, Indoor & Residential Lighting, Commercial & Industrial Lighting, Holiday & Seasonal Lighting, Home Automation, Safety and Security Lights, Fans & Heaters, Sport and Tennis Court Lighting and Lighting Parts & Accessories. RLLD's products are divided in this way because, typically speaking, the first question that must be answered about any lighting fixture is where and how it will be used. While the user may select one of these top level categories from the home page, they can generally be found just as easily by entering the terms into Google or other search engine.
Once the customer has made a selection, the user is presented with further subcategories related to the product selection. Indoor & Residential Lighting products, for example, are further divided according to the indoor location or application. Ceiling Lights, Wall Lights, and Floor Lamps are just a few examples of the major categories for indoor lighting. Along with these subcategoires, the user is also presented with several original articles authored by RLLD staff content writers. Articles like "Bathroom Lighting Tips" or "Strip Lighting Information" may assist the customer in choosing the correct product for the application, or simply provide ideas for a lighting design project. The products are always interlinked with the informational pages so that when a decision is made, the ordering process is always close at hand.
Once the customer has arrived at a product listing, narrowing down the selection until the correct item is found could not be easier. A left-hand navigation bar provides the customer with multiple options for sorting through the sometimes extensive results. Users may choose to shop by "Category," "Manufacturer," "Bulb Type," "Material," or "Voltage." Customers may also sort results by price, in ascending or descending order. These options can be selected in any order, meaning there are many roads leading to the right product, and all of them are easy to find.
While the skilled developers and programmers at RLLD have worked hard to make the internal site navigation as intuitive as possible, the reality is that most users never experience this aspect of the site. The reason for this is that most users find exactly what they are looking for as soon as they click on the top result in the search engine. Since RLLD uses real manufacturer SKU numbers in its product listings, a person looking for an angle-cut well light by Focus Industries could simply enter "SL-03-AC" into Google. After selecting the first result, the order process is just one click away.
The single most "findable" piece of information on RLLD's website, however, is its 1-800 number, which is always visible on the upper right-hand portion of the page. During normal business hours a live customer service representative can be reached with a single phone call. RLLD's customer care representatives have earned an impressive reputation for their willingness to go the extra mile for anyone who calls--answering questions and helping customers select the right product for their application. Orders may also be placed over the phone for customers who prefer a verbal confirmation. RLLD's staff works diligently to stay in contact with its customers regarding the status of their orders, and quickly alerts them of any issues that may occur in processing or shipping.
Running a successful online business is certainly no easy task. Through careful thought, years of expertise and a strong commitment to customer service, RLLD has found itself far ahead of the curve in the realm of technology-based business in general, and the online lighting retail industry in particular. No matter what kind of lighting fixture you are searching for, RLLD can light the way. Find what you are looking for! My entire house has exposed beams running through it. The living room is especially hard to keep lit at night, because of all the windows, as well as the light radius being blocked by beams. Right now I am just using torchieres, but it''s a pain to walk around and turn off 5 lights when i''m ready for bed! Any suggestions? Mounting the lights on the beams seems strange.
Well, since you have the torchieres, you might want to consider installing a DIMMER SWITCH to control the lighting circuit. This can be done with standard wall box dimmer or a LUTRON RADIO RA system. Lutron's Radio Ra allows you to automate a lighting system without the need of rewiring the house. Radio RA is a wireless home lighting control system that easily retrofits into any home. You can control the light in any room of your home, your car, bed, or even your swimming pool. Scene buttons on your master control allow you to choose from many useful pre-settings. One touch of the "TV" scene dims the lights and instantly turns your living room into a home theater. Press "Welcome" to turn on the lights in your garage and in your major living areas. The Radio RA remote control lighting system may also be integrated into your home security system. You can configure your Radio RA to turn on all lights in the house, or flash when the system is tripped--quite a deterrent to even the most determined intruder!
We have all the components needed to install a full Radio RA remote control lighting system into your home, including incandescent and low voltage single- or multi-use dimmers, wall-mounted master controls with 5-, 10-, or 15-key pads for scene selection or light monitoring, table top master controls, power boosters for low-voltage and fluorescent units, as well as infrared units for use with remote controls. Full RA Remote Radio Control Lighting system packages are also available, with everything you need to get started.
It's a very cool lighting control system!

I have 100 watt mercury vapor fixture. I want to light up 3 large oak trees. How far should the fixture be from the tree an how many should it have?
That depends on the viewing angle of the trees. If you have a 360 degree viewing angle, you will need two, perhaps three lights per tree. They should be located at ground level halfway between the trunk and the drip line for soft even coverage. If the lights are in a lawn area you may want to go with a GRADE LEVEL MERCURY VAPOR UPLIGHT or if they are in shrubs, you should go with a 100-WATT UPLIGHT BULLET w/HUB MOUNT. Check out our lighting GALLERY for more landscape lighting ideas. Send us a digital image for design assistance and fixture specifications.

I just replaced batteries in my BRK smoke detectors. We have 6 that are all connected and a couple of days after putting in new batteries, they went off. This has happened more than once. A friend of mine said when theirs did that, they had a bad one. How can I tell which one it might be if this is the case?
That is a very good question. I would lower all the SMOKE DETECTORS from the mounting plates and disconnect the red wire which loops them together. That way you can isolate the problem and identify the problem device. If you follow these instructions, the devices will remain in service for the duration of your test. Hope that helps.

My post lantern will not turn off during the daytime. I assume the problem is related to the photoelectric eye. Any ideas on how to correct this problem?
The life span of a photocell control is about 3-5 years. If you see moisture in the glass window of the PHOTOCELL CONTROL, it's time to replace it. They are very easy to install or replace since they only have three wires: Hot (black), Neutral (white), and Switch Leg (red). Turn off the power and be careful.

I own a convenience store that has a public restroom. Of course nobody turns off the darn lights or the vent fan. Consequently, my fan has burned up for the second time. IN-WALL TIMER SWITCHES , I would take a look at the Intermatic models we carry. These spring wound in wall timers come in several models:

Have you ever wondered how the lights turn on and off when you open or close a closet door? It works because of this little magical switching device called a
DOOR JAMB SWITCH.
Jamb switches have been around for years. There is nothing fancy about a jamb switch except that it is one of the most conveneient wall switches in the house. But door jamb switches are not easily installed after the fact, so consider them basically for new construction or remodel projects. They require a junction box to be mortered flush into the wood door jamb that provides a space to splice the wires. This is not always easy to do without cutting sheetrock and drilling the studs. Ask your electrician to find out what is right for your job.
Some
DOOR JAMB SWITCHES do not require a junction box and work on a low voltage current such as 12 or 24 volts. These miniature door switches require a
low voltage power supply and
relay to operate the system. This type of jamb switch is very helpful when you want to switch multiple doors on a cabinet because the wiring method is considerable more simple and easy to install.

The
ULTIMATE HOLIDAY LED CHRISTMAS TREE is a tree-shaped flat panel sign illuminated with 1,000s of LED bulbs. Available in various heights, the Ultimate Holiday Tree is designed to hang on the sides of buildings or stand in corporate lawns and deliver bright lighting effects, colorful moving patterns, and super large text messages that celebrate the holiday season.
The Ultimate Holiday Tree covers a lot of square feet on the side of a building or wall. However, it's flat panel design (about 5 inches wide without framing) allows it to be used in areas that traditional Christmas trees cannot. Scale the Ultimate Holiday Tree to size that is appropriate to your venue. There are 13 sizes to choose from between 8 and 100 feet tall.
The
ULTIMATE WINDOW LED CHRISTMAS TREE is an approximately 36-inch tall Christmas tree-shaped decoration illuminated with bright, direct view, color-changing LED clusters. It is designed to attract attention to retail stores as part of a holiday window or point-of-purchase display. In another suggested use, several Window Trees can be faced out of different windows of a multi-story building to quickly and economically build a bright commercial holiday display. Designed for years of indoor use, each Window Tree is hand-built with sturdy exteriors, professional emerald green paint jobs, and long-life LED bulbs. The trunk on the Window Tree can be removed with a screwdriver at your discretion to fit the custom look of your display. The Window Tree uses bright LED bulbs that direct their colorful changing lights at a 30 degree angle. The result is an intense direct view that is much more noticeable and entertaining than what is delivered through standard incandescent Christmas bulbs such as C9, C7, or minilights.
The
Ultimate Holiday Trees from Lightwild uses the latest innovations in LEDs and light control technology to deliver a unique alternative to common, traditional Christmas trees. Call today and make this one of the most sophisticated and exciting holiday lighting displays you have seen in years.

I have an arbor (pergola) on my deck. The arbor is 25'' long 12''wide and 8''tall, with 2" X 8" boards on edge spanning the top at 16" centers. I wish provide for this area soft lighting that would kind of "suffuse" the area. Just offer a warm glow all around. I need to use 12v lights, using a transformer. Could you please specify the type of lighting and quantities needed? Thanks.C. Nielson, Baton Rouge, LA
You have many lighting options for your pergola. You can install a series of 5 or 6 FOCUS SL-10 LOW VOLTAGE DOWNLIGHTS down the middle or both sides depending on the post layout and surrounding plant material. I would use the 50-watt flood lamp, 12/2 CABLE, a remote TRANSFORMER and DIMMER CONTROL for mood setting.
Another option is to use a HANGING BASKET LIGHT to support your seasonal color baskets. This is a very attractive and unique form of lighting. The same transformer, wire and dimmer apply. We have many color options, including solid copper.
We also have a great selection of HANGING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTS that look super as a downlight or over a table for an accent light.
I hope this information is helpful in your lighting selection. As long as you pick a fixture that fits the style of your home, produces very little glare and can be dimmed, you can''t go wrong.

I''m looking to upgrade the fixtures for the light poles in my parking lot. The ballast is mounted in the base of the pole and is rated for 400W MH. I''ve been searching for a manufacturer who offers a light fixture that is not self-contained (i.e. does not have a ballast), essentially a fitter and globe. The poles are EPA rated at 2.1 for 110 mph wind and are 3" o.d. at the top, 4" at the bottom. Can you recommend a line of products for me to look at or will I have to abandon my existing ballasts?
We do not normally offer a remote ballast option for our PARKING LOT LIGHTING FIXTURES. However, depending on the quantity that you are looking for we can certainly ask our manufacturer to make you some. We do offer custom made fixtures in any color!
All of our COMMERCIAL LIGHTING FIXTURE PACKAGES have multi-tap ballast built into the fixture housing. If your poles are as good as you described, you can always abandon the ballasts at the bottom of the pole and install some of our custom fixtures. Give Aaron a call in customer service at 800-239-2939 to discuss your requirements and special pricing.

I am trying to equate the 12 volt outdoor lighting systems as compared to the standard 120 volt outdoor lanterns. What wattage would you use in post lanterns if say the standard 120 volt lantern used a maximum of 60 watt bulbs? What would be the corresponding wattage for the 12 volt system?
The 1141 single contact lamp (automotive lamp) is the roughly equivalent to a 40 watt 120 volt lamp.
The 1156 single contact lamp (automotive lamp) is the roughly equivalent to a 50 watt 120 volt lamp.
The 1195 single contact lamp (automotive lamp) is the roughly equivalent to a 75 watt 120 volt lamp.

Hello, we have constructed a new tennis court .We have use six new poles for lighting (2 poles at the centre line, 4 poles behind the base line, at side screen level). The pole height is 22 ft. Each pole has (2) 125 Watt Metal Halide fitting. After completion, the illumination found to be very poor. We have now decided to replace the light with 250 Watt metal Halide. Will it be sufficient? I should have called you first!
You should be using 1000-watt TENNIS COURT LIGHTING FIXTURES to adequately illuminate your tennis court. Check out our TENNIS COURT LIGHTING INFORMATION page.

Trying to remotely control and dim light on painting. Older home, no ceiling crawl space power is close to painting location but adding a manual switch would be a real problem Thanks!
Have you looked at the LUTRON LAMP CORD DIMMER for your art light? It is simple to install on the wire or directly into the plug and will dim the lights.
Another option for remote control dimming would be to install a LUTRON SPACER DIMMER to control the receptacle feeding the picture light. It has a hand held remote that works very nicely.

I want to place 9 Path lights w/20watt bulbs, 4 Flood lights w/35watt bulbs and 3 Up/Accent lights w/20watt bulbs around the right side and front of my house. The total distance from the transformer to the last light will be approx 140 feet. By my calculation, that is a total of 380 watts. Can I run all lights off one cable, or do I need more? What gauge cable do I need, 12/2 or 10/2 and do I need a 600watt transformer? Also, if using your
SRTO-SS-600, should I run three lines and group the lights by type, i.e. Path, Flood, and Up/Accent? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
I like the way you are designing your system by fixture type. It will make it easier to troubleshoot when the time comes. You will need three 10/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLES to handle the loads you have described. The TECHLIGHT LV600SSM is a multi-tap transformer that will allow you to manipulate the voltage to overcome VOLTAGE DROP from the long runs. Have you selected your OUTDOOR LOW VOLTAGE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FIXTURES yet?
Please let us know if you need any other design assistance or help placing your order.

I am looking at your website Focus
SL-09 and
SL-10. I'm considering them for a patio which has an open-beam cover (2 x 8s on edge spaced 12" apart). For nighttime entertaining. The 2 x 8''s are about 10'' high from which the lights would hang. Which of the two fixtures would you recommend, and which particular lamp?
Both the FOCUS SL-09 and FOCUS SL-10 are great little down lights. Keep in mind that these are strictly down lights and do not adjust. So you must place the lights directly over your bar for best results.
For your application, I like the Focus SL-10 with the ALR12 LAMP because it has a spot and flood option. Also, the ALR12 lamp utilizes a reflector which controls the light better. I would go with the 50 watt spots if you plan to install a DIMMER. If not, go with the 20 watt 18 degree lamps. You will also need a good MAGNETIC TRANSFORMER to power the lights.
Sounds like a great project, send us some pictures!

Last year I had translucent blue C9 bulbs on my roof & trees. The lights went up the first week of December & while they weren't turned on after the end of January, they were not taken down until May. My question is - - the bulbs went up blue but by the time I took them down, the blue paint had come off of all of them at least 50%, some 100% - - what happened & what kind of bulb should I get to keep this from happening? This year I want shades of green.
That is the problem with some C7 & C9 TRANSLUCENT LIGHT BULBS. A good quality seasonal light bulb should give you three to four years before fading or deteriorating. All our American Lighting C7 & C9 light bulbs are double dipped for long lasting color and have sturdy nickel socket base to prevent corrosion. We have a dark green light bulb that is just what you need! You might also look at the teal green as a different solution. I am looking to uplight with buried fixtures and wash the front of my home aproximate dimensions 125" by 40" height. What do you think would work?
We have some PRE-PACKAGED OUTDOOR LIGHTING KITS that might be of interest to you. However, all the kits we have posted are stake mount.
If you want a good quality grade level up light, I like the FOCUS SL03 MR16 UPLIGHT for washing your house. You will need 12-14 lights to properly wash the facade of your home.
In addition, you will need a TRANSFORMER and DIRECT BURIAL WIRE to complete the job. We have a wonderful selection of OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FIXTURES & EQUIPMENT.

Sorry, not an electrician so excuse my ignorance. I am remodeling my basement entertainment room. I have a 4 switch box that controls 4 different sets of lights (none having more than 2 bulbs). I want to use the
Lutron Spacer System (I think). I want to be able to set the 4 switches at different levels and be able to able to have different moods (lighting scenes?) and I want them all to be remote
controlled. I want to put in a 5 switch box, 4 for the lights and 1 master 4 scene control. I also want a remote to control the 4 scenes. I think I need the following components:1)4 -
SPSAD switches2)1 -
SPS5
wc master
cntrl3)1 - CW5 wall plate4)1 -
SPS4
ITRP remote. Do I need something else or is this it?
You would be better off with a LUTRON GRAFIK EYE for your media room. It will handle scenes and can operate from a hand held remote. I think it is a better solution than the LUTRON SPACER SYSTEM.

I am trying to make permanent Christmas light frames for my windows that are
pre strung with Christmas lights. I would like to shorten the strings to custom fit the windows, but so far have only shorted out the circuits and ruined several experimental efforts. Do you have a simple diagram that shows how these strings work and how I can shorten them safely? Any other suggestions?
Most CHRISTMAS LIGHT STRINGS are wired in series and cannot be cut without ruining the lights. If you are using MINI LIGHTS, NET LIGHTS or TWINKLE LIGHTS this is the case.
If you would like to use GLOBE LIGHTS, C7 or C9 LIGHTS, they can be custom cut because the operate at 120 volts and are not wired in series. We have new LED C7 LIGHTS that are very long lasting and use very little electricity.
Of course, you can always use 120 VOLT ROPE LIGHTS for your window displays. It can be cut every 18" or closer depending on the type and voltage you buy.
Another great way to decorate windows at Christmas is with HOLIDAY LIGHTED SCULPTURES.

I just installed (2) 1500 watt floodlights 30'' up in a pine tree looking out into the distance as I wanted to look out at the view at night. All they seem to do is light up a small pear tree directly below the pine tree and about 12'' from it. What will I have to do to achieve the look I want which is to illuminate a 60 yard view at night?
I am assuming that you installed a couple HALOGEN FLOODLIGHTS from what you have described. Those lights do not have the right kind of internal reflector to focus the light in the area you want. I would suggest installing (2) 400-WATT METAL HALIDE FLOODLIGHTS and CUSTOM DOWN LIGHT SHIELDS to properly illuminate your landscaping and to improve your nighttime vista. Hello, I like this light. I have lap siding that is 4 1/4 high. Would I be able to install this light in the given space of 4 1/4" without having to cut into the piece of siding above? Also, does this light direct it''s light downward? Or does it direct it''s light outward? Also, how easy is it to change the bulb in this light? Thank you
I don''t see why not. The RAB SNL1 GOODNIGHT KIT FIXTURE is designed to mount to a standard junction box. You can adjust the light to point exactly where you want it to go. This is a great little fixture, and the hi-lo feature is a real winner!

Looking for horse arena lighting with timers on it or vending type. Need help asap. Thank you for your time. Caroline Lovelace, volunteer for the Gatesville, Texas Riding Club
I am not aware of any TIME CLOCKS that work like vending machines for your HORSE ARENA LIGHTS. Because kilowatts per hour differ by location it would be hard to make that work. You might just come up with an hourly charge for use of the lights and put a lock on the time clock to keep people honest.

to light a horse riding arena 165 ft. x 270 ft. how many lights Techlight 01 and what wattage would we need. Also how many wooden poles and what height would you recommend
That''s a big arena. You will need six dual kits with 25'' to 30'' poles. Space three poles per side for even distribution. The 400 WATT ARENA KITS are fine for casual events. I would jump up to the 1000 WATT ARENA KITS for competition events. Keep in mind the higher you go, the more uniform the light, the less fixtures you need and the less glare you will have. It might be more cost effective to go will a 30'' DUAL 1000 WATT COMMERCIAL KIT with steel poles. Let us know if we can help! We love horses!

I am updating a new home and have received several opinions about 4", 5" and 6" recessed lights. We need lots of light, but want the home to look updated. Any thoughts?
I favor using the 6" LIGHTOLIER RECESSED LIGHT as a general light source for the room. That way you can use 120-watt incandescent lamps in conjunction with a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL for soft or bright lighting.
For smaller rooms, you may want to go with a 5" LIGHTOLIER LIGHT to fit the scale of the room. They are rated for up to 85-watts. Then use smaller adjustable LOW VOLTAGE RECESSED LIGHTS for accent lighting such things as painting, sculptures or tables.
And finally, you might want to hang a DECORATIVE CHANDELIER or CEILING FAN in the center of the room.

I am currently redoing some of my landscaping and would like to add some outdoor lighting. Can anyone give me a good recommendation for a magazine review article or a web site that would explain the different options available? I would also like a web site or article that compares different brands to help me chose.
I understand that most of the outdoor systems use low voltage circuits. Are there any disadvantages to the low voltage systems?

I am a theatrical lighting designer, but I was wondering about expanding into architectural and landscape lighting. How do you guys find your lighting designers? What qualifications do you look for? Do you go to big companies or small independently-owned businesses with people you know and trust? Is the income pretty steady/live able?
Landscape lighting is simply another logical step in your lighting career. Every home or office you visit is a new set, just like a new production on the stage. Creative landscape lighting is developed from the props that you have available in the garden. First fill the space with a general wash of light. Second, create a backdrop of light to frame the space or vista. Then use well placed accent lights to illuminate
sculptures,
ponds, and
trees; the same way you did in the theater for the actors. Except now you get to use
rock lights.
The lighting techniques are the same, but the equipment for landscape lighting is completely different. Instead of large lighting instruments, you will be using small petite lighting fixtures.
Residential Landscape Lighting & Design has a wonderful selection of landscape lighting fixtures.
I wish you well in your transition and welcome to the garden!

I'm going to be running some landscape lights (standard voltage) and will be using Romex run right from the breaker box. Is there special Romex for outdoor wiring? Would you use 14 gauge for this type of lighting?
Romex wire is designed for indoor use and should not be used for outdoor landscape lighting. For outdoor line voltag or 120 volt systems you should be using
UF CABLE or conduits. UF cable is designed for direct burial as long a it is 18" below grade. This is the same depth you have to dig for PVC conduits. Galvanized rigid conduit only has to be buried 6" to meet National Electrical Codes. 14 gauge wire is rated for 15 amps and 12 gauge wire is rated for a full 20 amps of load.

I am in the process of putting in an outdoor horse arena, 20 M X 60 M. I'm trying to find out what type of lighting to use, how many lights, wattage needed, etc... The lighting needs to be sufficient enough to minimize shadows, but strong enough for clear sight. I am assuming i need to mount these on poles, but don't know how high the poles need to be either. I have heard of a formula that can tell me the wattage needed but cant find it anywhere. Anyone have any info for this? your response is greatly appreciated.
thanks...

I have a dual bulb outdoor pole lamp that I would like to control with a remote. Does someone make a remote control light socket base that I could screw into the two light sockets in the pole lamp and then be able to control the on/off of the lights with a remote? Thanks for the help.
I am not aware of a screw in remote control device. However, we do have a LUTRON SPACER that will work on a halogen or incandescent light source. The Lutron Spacer is a dimmer control that works in conjunction with a hand held remote.

I have 2, approx. 5 year old 250W Mercury Vapor Floods. They are identical to your current Techlight LRF-B5A model. I have checked bulb:OK. The fixture Hums bad, but no light. I want to try and replace the Ballast kit, but mine looks slightly different than the picture on website. The ballast is the same, but the Capacitor in the box behind the fixture itself looks different. Mine looks sort of like 2 D'' cell batteries mounted together, all chrome. The one in the picture is a single white cilinder. I assume both need to be replaced?? Is the correct part for my repair? Any info will be appreciated.
The REPLACEMENT 250 WATT MERCURY VAPOR BALLAST we have posted on out website will work in your fixture. The image posted is actually of a 175 watt ballast. Capacitors vary is size and shape depending on the manufacturer. All the metal capacitors have been replaced by plastic models. We have ADVANCE BALLASTS and they are one of the best on the market. Remember that MERCURY VAPOR LAMPS depreciate over time and loose their intensity. You might want to install new lamps with the ballasts.

can I run a "pigtail wire" from the main wire [running from the transformer]. In essence I would have a main wire with spliced wires going to my lights. Is this o.k. or do I have to run the main line continuously in to each light and back out, then onto the next light? What I woulod like to do is run a sprout wire from the main line to each light[where that wire would end] this way there would be one wier run to each light and none returning to the main wire. I am using 12/2 wire with 100 watt transformer for 8 lights. thanks
WOW, thats quite the question! Sure, you can run a 12/2 home run wire and splice into it at each light fixture. If you have enough wire, you might consider running a continous loop system.. This means, that you retun the wire from the far end which in effect balances the system. Be sure that you do not cross polarity on the wire causing the tranasformer to short out.

Here are some simply WIRING DIAGRAMS that you might study before running you wires and installing the lights.

I want to uplight the facade and certain specimen plants in the front bed of our house. There is a large apple tree on the far side of the driveway and an even larger magnolia tree on the far side of the front walk. Is it possible to do this with one transformer?
Sure, you can use one transformer if you wire the system properly and do the math. By math, I mean calculating total wattage, voltage drop and designing a balanced lighting plan. Our PREPACKAGED OUTDOOR LIGHTING KITS have everything you need to install a quality landscape low voltage lighting system.

I have a 12v system plugged into an outlet that runs off a light switch inside. It''s nice because I can turn off/on from inside. Q: Is there a way to add a motion detector to trigger the system and still turn it on from the switch when needed?
Sure, we have a 12 volt motion detector that you can put inline between the transformer and the lights. It is great for controlling low voltage lighting or security systems up to 96 watt capacity . It''s easy to install and easy to test. A 5 minute Test Period allows aiming and walk testing day or night. During the Test Period, the sensor keeps lights on for 5 seconds each time it detects movement.

Are you looking for some safe, inexpensive and effective lighting fixtures for your horse arena, horse stables, and horse barn or horse farm? Whether you have Quarter horses, Arabian horses, and Miniature horses or just operate a horse boarding stables, an investment in lighting plays an important part of the overall safety and well being of your animals and patrons.
Outdoor Arena LightsOutdoor floodlights are designed for broad coverage and are typically mounted on wood poles, steel poles or on buildings to provide area lighting.
Metal halide floodlights are perfect for illuminating facilities surrounding barns, stalls, walking pens, arenas, and parking areas. For larger facilities, taller poles with multiple fixtures are a better solution for illuminating equestrian facilities.
Indoor Arena LightingIndoor commercial down lights such as
high bay fixtures or
low bay fixtures are a good lighting solution for rodeo arenas and all indoor facilities where bright uniform illumination is desired.
Exit lights & signs provide safety and security to patrons and guests in the event of a fire or emergency as they find their way out of the facility.
Horse Stall Lighting FixturesLights designed for horse barns or horse stalls should be waterproof and have high impact plastic covers for the safety of the animals. Metal halide lights and fluorescent light sources are good for horse facilities because of the color of the light. High pressure sodium lights, on the other hand produce a yellow colored light which is better for discouraging mosquitoes and bugs.
Decorative Barn LightsIf you are interested in adding some character and charms to that old barn, take a look at our gooseneck lighting fixtures. You have seen these kinds of lights on old gas stations, country stores and homes. They are great for lighting the façade of the barn and as a good old fashion country night light.
Energy Saving LampsSuppose that nothing is wrong with your current barn lighting except you are tired of changing incandescent light bulbs. Upgrading to retrofit fluorescent light bulbs is a perfect way to solve that problem. Not only will you save money, but your maintenance issues will be gone. These kinds of lights are good in feed rooms, closets, tack rooms and other areas where surface mounted incandescent lights are being used.
Good Old Fashion Barn LightsLooking for a
simple barn light that would bother your neighbors? They still make the old “sunny boy” but, now you can buy a
mercury vapor light with a glare shield.
You can also buy just the glare shield for an existing barn light.
Landscape LightingLandscape lighting is the last form of outdoor lighting that might be relevant at equestrian facilities. Aesthetic lighting for the manager’s office, show pavilion, front entrance or at the owner’s house is a great way to dress things up. Enhance landscaping, highlight trees, showcase pools, and create a nighttime vista for you and your guests.

So what is a Lutron Grafik Eye anyway? How does it differ form a standard wall box dimmer control? Is it worth the monet?
LUTRON GRAFIK EYE CONTROLS are wall box dimmers on steroids. Seriously, they replace standard switches and give you pre programed scenes with fade rates. That means, at the touch of a button, the lights will go to a predetermined level every time. Is that cool or what?
LUTRON GRAFIK EYE CONTROLS reduce wall clutter, by using
KEYPADS in lieu of switches.
For larger loads, over 2000 watts, use a
LUTRON POWER BOOSTER to control the lights. The booster works in conjunction with the Grafik Eye to dim the lights.
Lutron is the leader in dimmer controls and the investment will give you years of enjoyment!

I am trying to design an outdoor low voltage lighting system for my home. I am not an electrician, so I don't know the first thing about designing a low voltage lighting system. How do I calculate lighting loads, transformer sizes and wiring methods for my project? Any help would be most appreciated!
You are very big to ask for help. Most men would try, fail and ask questions later. Low voltage lighting is not hard, if you consider a few key factors. First, the main thing is to understand how many lights you need, what the total wattage is and what size wire to run for a successful job. Let's look at an example:
200 watts of ACCENT LIGHTS 100 watts of PATH LIGHTS50 watts of UNDERWATER LIGHTS
100 watts of FEATURE LIGHTS450 watts of total lighting load
450/12 = 37.5 amps
12/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE is rated for 20 amps 10/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE is rated for 30 amps 8/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE is rated for 40 amps
I would recommend that you split the lighting load into several home run wires form groups of lights back to the transformer. That way, you minimize the amperage load and the effects of
VOLTAGE DROP. Yes, voltage drop is the downfall of any low voltage lighting system. That is what causes the lights to be dim and ineffective.

We recently had an inspection of our commercial building by the local fire marshall. He has asked us to upgrade our exit lights and emergency lights to accomodate changes in our local fire codes. I noticed that you had quite the selection of emergency lights to choose from. Since I have 30 days to comply, if I order today how long will it take for me to receive my shipment?
Actual shipment of your
EMERGENCY EXIT LIGHTS and
EMERGENCY LIGHTING EQUIPMENT will depend on your shipping method. We have a good stock on hand of all our lights including
COMBINATION EXIT AND EMERGENCY LIGHTS. If you order more than we have on hand, our supplers have plenty on hand.
Did the fire inspector suggest using
FLUORESCENT BATTERY PACKS or
EMERGENCY BATTERY PACKS in your exosting fluorescent fixtures? These are hand for executive offices or other spaces where a
WALL MOUNTED EMERGENCY LIGHT would be ojectionable.
