Light rope lamp spacing and cutting recomendations.

Can the rope lights be cut every inch or so. And can I hook it up with existing female plug

It depends on the voltage of the rope lights. LIGHT ROPE has small light bulbs wired in series. This means a grouping of lights is matched to the operating lovtage. So on 120 VOLT ROPE LIGHTS, for example, you can only cut the wire every 18". On 12 VOLT ROPE LIGHT you can the light every 2".

Lighting for boats using 12 volt lighting fixtures in solid brass.

I have malibu deck 7 watt low voltage deck ("boat") lights that have worked flawlessly for over 10 years. Recently, however, only the first two lights in the row of 12 light when the transformer goes on. I recently replaced the 300 watt transformer with a 600 watt, but the problem persists. What is most bothersome, however, is every few nights all 12 lights will come on! Suggestions?

Sound like you have a some sockets or lamps that are going bad. The sockets over time deteriorate or corrode due to salt air or exposure to water. The filaments in the light bulbs sometimes break off the support posts inside the lamp. As the filament moves around it comes in contact with the support post and comes on due to arching. That would be one explanation for the lights that are going on and off. Try changing all the lamps and inspect the sockets for replacement. If you have gotten 10 years, it might be time to buy some new lights! We have BRASS LIGHTS designed for boats.

A LUMEN is a measure of luminous flux or quantity of light emmitted by the source.

Halogen lamps (like tungsten) have their light output quoted in watts, but really lumens is the important parameter, not how much power the lights consume. How many lumens does a halogen lamp output for a given wattage?

A LUMEN is a measure of luminous flux or quantity of light emmitted by the source. For example, a dinner candle provides about 12 lumens. A 60-watt incandescent lamp provides 840 lumens.

Lumens Per Watt (IpW) - A ratio expressing the luminous efficacy of a light source Here are some typical efficacies for various light sources:

Edison's first lamp

1.4 lpW

Incandescent lamps

10 to 40 lpW

Halogen lamps

20 to 45 IpW

Fluorescent lamps

35 to105 IpW

Mercury vapor lamps

50 to 60 IpW

Metal halide lamps

60 to 120 IpW

High pressure sodium lamps

60 to 140 IpW

The values above for discharge lamps do not include the effect of the ballasts, which must be used with those lamps. Taking ballast losses into account reduces "system" or lamp ballast efficacies typically by 10 to 20% depending on the type of ballast used.

Phantom lighting is designed for indirect lighting

I'm building a timber frame and want to use low voltage lights on top of the beams for mood lighting. Do I need to put the wire in conduit from the transformers in the basement to the beams?

I recommend using PHANTOM COVE LIGHTS on top of the beams for a soft indirect light source. Select the 10 watt Xenon frosted lamps spaced 6" on center with a 24 volt remote magnetic transformer. As for wiring, you will need a couple of 12/2 or 10/2 home run wires from the top of the beam to the transformer in the basement. Contact John in customer service at 800-239-2939.

Phantom Lighting is a perfect solution for your home!

Lutron dual dimmer is a good solution for controlling two seperate light fixtures from one box.

Is a dual dimmer or one dimmer and regular switch available in a single gang style?thanks.

LUTRON only makes a DUAL DIMMER SWITCH for two devices. If you are looking for a dimer switch combination, you are out of luck. You can always enlarge the switch box to make room for another device.

Wall packs used in a commercial building vs. high and low bay fixtures

I am looking to order 16 to 20 MH 400w wall packs for a commercial space, used for production machines. Can you help me with the proper spacing. 25'' wide 210'' long 22'' ceilings. Lights are mounted on both sides of the 210''wall 20'' high

I would run the METAL HALIDE 400-WATT WALL PACKS on both sides of the production area alternating them at 22'' intervals on center. Mount the lights at 15-20'' above the floor. This will give you a good source of working light along the perimeter of the space.

Have you considered using HIGH BAY FIXTURES or LOW BAY FIXTURES instead of wall packs? Lighting from the ceiling may be a more effective way of recuding glare and increasing production. If you go this route, order (10) METAL HALIDE 1000-WATT FIXTURES and mount them down the center of the building.

Depending on the height of the ceiling and how critical the work, you could also do a combination of both to minimize shadows. Let us know if we can help with a lighting layout!

Stained glass window illumination and accent lighting for decorative windows.

Need to spot light from the outside. A 8'' wide by 24'' tall stain glass window. Has 4 seprate areas due to a cross in the center from top to bottom and left to right. Which spot lights would you suggest. Thank you

Lighting stained glass window is always a challenge due to the different transmission rates of the colored glass. You have basically two choices if they are ground mounted:

(2) HALOGEN PAR64 SPOT LIGHTS with 500-watt to 100-watt lamps or (2) METAL HALIDE PARABOLIC SPOT FIXTURE with 400-watt lamps.

You should mount the lights about 12'' to 14'' back from the window on a concrete base. I have also seen lights mounted on a pole at or near the centerline of the window which flattens out the light creating a more uniform distribution. This technique can be a problem if the light can be seen through the windoe.

Either way, the lights will not effectively light the corners, but the majority of the window will look fantastic. Please contact CUSTOMER SERVICE for specific part numbers and pricing at 800-239-2939. Neither one of these suggestions is currently posted. Thanks!

Antler chandelier, deer antler chandeliers, chandeliers from elk antlers & antler light fixtures

Nothing adds to the decor and ambiance in a vacation cabin, lodge or hunting lease than a beautiful hand made ANTLER CHANDELIER. Deer antler chandeliers or light fixtures made from elk or moose antlers are a real conversation piece. They are used in residences, offices, hotels and lodges throughout Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Texas and and other venues with rustic themes.

Finding a well made ANTLER CHANDELIER is not always an easy task. Because of the large number of antlers found in the wild, many people attempt to make and market antler chandeliers, lamps and sconces. Some painstakingly conceal the wiring inside the antlers by carefully drilling each antler, while others simply glue exposed wires. Well made elk, moose and deer antler chandeliers should have all the wiring concealed and should have a Underwriter's label of approval. After all, who wants a antler chandelier that might be a fire hazard instead of a prize possession.

Shop while you are on vacation, but buy from us!

Phantom low voltage lighting is designed for indirect lighting on wood timbers.

It is always a good idea to run conduit for backup, however Romex® is fine as long as it meets the local electrical code.

For best results, install a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL for adjusting the light levels for mood lighting.

New Orleans gas lanterns create old world charm and elegance for any home.

Have you ever wondered about installing gas lanterns at your home? Have you ever admired or been mesmerized by the gentle flicker of a dancing flame created by a gas lantern light?

New Orleans Gas Outdoor Lanterns are a perfect way to add elegance, charm and warmth to your front door, patio or front entrance. Gas lanterns or gas devices as they were called back in the late 1900’s was the earliest form of modern street lighting. One of Europe’s greatest displays of gas street lighting took place in 1866 when Queen Victoria unveiled the famous statue of Prince Albert in Queen Square in Wolver Hampton. Thousands joined in the town square that evening to see the queen and marvel at the illuminated brilliance of the town square from gas lantern lights. These first gas lanterns we fabricated by Ready & Son and eventually displayed at the Wolver Hampton industrial exhibition of 1869 and again in 1902. Early gas lanterns were constructed of sheet metal and tin and assembled using a soldiered lead technique developed first in the automotive industry. That same soldering technique for assembling outdoor gas lanterns still is the preferred method today.

Over the years scores of people learned the art form of lead soldering and sheet metal fabrication. Eventually, more expensive metals, such as copper, were introduced and have become the standard for today’s gas lanterns. Copper was first used by man over 10,000 years ago. We're in no danger of running out of copper. Known worldwide resources of this important and valuable metal are estimated at nearly 5.8 trillion pounds of which only about 0.7 trillion (12%) have been mined throughout history. A copper pendant discovered in what is now northern Iraq has been dated about 8700 B.C. Copper is a wonderful metal that ages and patinas beautifully creating old world charm for a decorative gas lantern. Several significant improvements increased the brilliance and efficiency of the gas light. Early craftsman pinched the end of the gas tube to a fan shape, mixing air with the gas before the point at which it was lit. Another improvement involved surrounding the flame with a mantle of metallic oxide cloth until it glowed brighter than the flame were all important innovations in the quest for more light.

Fabricating gas outdoor lanterns is an art form that has been passed down from generation to generation. One of the most famous craftsmen of gas lanterns is Andrew Bevolo, Sr. who set the standard for gas lanterns in New Orleans and around the country. Mr. Bevolo’s gas lanterns are installed at some of the most prominent homes and businesses worldwide including the famous French Quarter in Louisiana. Mr. Bevolo is not the only manufacturer of gas lights; in fact many companies produce quality hand made outdoor copper gas light fixtures.

New Orleans Gas Outdoor Lanterns is one of those other companies who manufacture quality gas lanterns that will proudly represent your impeccable vision for elegance, timeliness and style. Influenced by famous New Orleans homes, or lantern collection is designed to achieve the Old World look with a twist of French country inspiration. New Orleans Gas Outdoor Lanterns are crafted of the finest materials, giving you affordable, elegant and functional design. Each lantern is welded and riveted at the factory to insure stability as well as durability. Made of solid copper and finished with a bronze patina surface, their enduring quality can withstand any environment. New Orleans Gas Outdoor Lanterns has earned the coveted CSA certification seal of approval.
New Orleans Gas Outdoor Lanterns will assuredly be the final touch to illuminate your home's charm!

New Orleans Gas Outdoor Lanterns copper gas lanterns mounted outside the home are both decorative and functional in design. They provide excellent accent and ambient lighting for visitors who need to safely reach your door. Gas lanterns give a sense of “Welcome” to guests and friends when they are used to flank the front entrance of a home. Outdoor landscape lighting fixtures designed for lighting walls.

which lighting can go on wall facing up, not halogen and not get ruined by the rain.

Rain and sprinklers are tough on all outdoor lighting fixtures. As for the wall lighting, it depends on the size of the wall and how bright you need the lights. For small walls, look at the FOCUS FLUORESCENT ALL WASHER with warm white lamps. For large walls, take a look at the TECHLIGHT METAL HALIDE BOX FLOOD

Will my outdoor lights be dim if I use different wattge lamps on one 12 volt transformer?

I have a 600 watt transformer with 2 runs that can handle 300 watt's per run. Will I get the same brightness from the 5 50 watt lights and 6 50 watt lights? Anther way the ask the question is it better to install less than 300 watts per run to obtain the full brightness of the lights. A second question is does the distance from the transformer to the first lights make a difference on the brightness of the lights? We put our transformer in the basement and ran the wire for about 35 feet before the first set of lights.

You will experience VOLTAGE DROP the further the lights are from the power supply. The difference in light output between 250-watts and 300-watts on your runs will be very little. If you put the least amount of lights on the longest run you can overcome any significant loss of light output.

Sizing exhaust fans, heaters, whole house ventilators, ceiling fans

Sizing a vent fan or heater for a bathroom or laundry room can be a frustrating and confusing experience without knowing the basic terminology. Here are some common terms and suggestions associated with determining the correct exhaust fan for your application:

Location
Exhaust fans should be located in or near the shower or tub, and in an enclosed water closet. Keep exhaust points opposite the supply air source to ensure that the fresh air is drawn through the room. Bathroom doors should not be sealed too tightly at the bottom in order to allow “makeup air” to enter the room when the door is closed. The Home Ventilation Institute recommends that a fan should be left on for 20 minutes or more after a shower to clear humidity adequately and to ensure moisture and condensation in the fan body or ducting is minimized.

Sone
A Sone is a measurement of sound in terms of comfortable hearing level for an average listener. The lower the sone value, the more comfortable the listening environment. Sones are not decibels or volume, but rather how sound is “sensed.” One sone is the equivalent of a quiet refrigerator.

CFM
CFM is the acronym for Cubic Feet per Minute — the measure of air volume moved by the fan blower. Choose a fan with a CFM rating appropriate for your room size to ensure adequate ventilation.

Duct Types
It is recommended, where possible, to use rigid duct. It has less resistance to air flow and allows the fan to operate much more efficiently. If flexible duct is used, be sure the duct is as straight as possible. Larger diameter ducts will result in improved performance. Smaller diameter ducts will cause the fan to run harder, greatly reducing the CFM performance of the fan and create excess noise. A smooth surface duct allows for optimum airflow. For best results, use galvanized sheet metal or PVC. Flexible aluminum duct is durable, easy to install and often used. However, the ridges in aluminum flexible duct increase static pressure and can reduce air flow and fan performance. This results in lower CFM’s, higher noise levels and greater energy consumption. The degree to which performance is affected depends on the length of duct, number and degree of elbows. Sagging or weaving a fan duct will also increase static pressure and reduce a fans performance. When using a flexible aluminum duct, support the entire length of the duct with braces or hangers to keep it as straight as possible for the entire run. If the duct lies across the attic, do not allow it to sag between each joist. Also, avoid weaving serpentine through trusses. Using a flexible duct made of nylon or vinyl is not recommended due to high static pressure caused by its ridges and curvature. Remember that a duct-free exhaust fan is not a ventilating device. It does not remove air from the room.

Static Pressure
Static pressure for vent, heaters and exhaust fans is the measurement of airflow resistance as it is pushed through duct work which reduces the effectiveness of the fan. Learn more on the Home Ventilation Institute web site www.hvi.org.

Intermittent or Continuous Service
Continuous ventilation provides today’s airtight homes with a relatively constant and controlled lower level of ventilation. Intermittent ventilation is used to exhaust sources of moisture and odors, while continuous ventilation fans are used to remove accumulated indoor air pollutants. Ventilating fans should be located near the source of moisture and indoor air pollutants in bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, hobby rooms and smoking rooms.

Once you decide on the duty type, use this simple formula for selecting the right exhaust fan for your application:

Calculate the cubic feet of your bathroom (length x width x height)
Divide by 60 (the number of minutes in an hour)
Multiply the result by 8 (the number of recommended air changes per hour)
Select a
Panasonic or Nutone fan which has the CFM rating that you calculated.

If you need help selecting a bathroom exhaust fan, heater, indoor ceiling fan, outdoor ceiling fans, replacement exhaust fan parts, or combination fan/heater just give the professionals at Residential Landscape Lighting & Design a call toll free at 800-239-2939.

Low voltage dimmers on line voltage lights is OK.

Can I connect one Low voltage dimmer to 120v line that has two low voltage transformers on it? I want to dim all lights from both transformers at once.

Yes, you can connect line voltage lights on a LOW VOLTAGE DIMMER, but you should not connect low voltage lights on a LINE VOLTAGE DIMMER.

Add more lights to my low voltage lighting system using the same transformer.

I have a 300 Watt channel on my low voltage landscape transformer. Currently it has a single 100'' 16 gauge with 150 watts of lights on it. Can I start at the transformer with a 2nd line on the same channel and run the 2nd line 60'' and put 60 watts on it - OR, am I breaking a rule? Otherwise, would a T-connector off the main 100'' line allow me to split the trunk and accomplish my 150''?I realize that I can shift down to a thicker gauge to get more run length - but an trying not to do that.thanks very much.howard@mcq.com

First of all your existing 16-gauge DIRECT BURIAL CABLE is borderline to carry that kind of load over that distance to start thinking about tapping into the line. 150/12 = 12.50 amps. 16-gauge wire is rated for 10 amps maximum. You should consider changing the wire to 12/2 CABLE which is rated for 20 amps. This will reduce the effects of voltage drop and give you more uniform lighting.

I like the idea of installing some new home run wiring for the lights you want to add. You can certainly do that as long as you don''t exceed the capacity of the transformer.

You might want to consider getting a PRE-PACKAGED LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KIT that contains everything you need to upgrade your lighting.

Metal halide flood fixture to light a large back yard.

I would like to install an outdoor light on the peak of my 2 story house to illuminate the backyard, which is about a third of an acre. Could you point me in some direction on where to start? First and foremost I need it to be bright to allow activities to take place at night and I like the look of a white light (like HID)as opposed to yellowish/orange color seen sometimes. I could run a 110 or 220V line if needed. The siding is wood so it''ll probably need some bracket to keep it away from the house if it gets too hot. One or two headed is OK. Weather resistant too. Thanks!

I would mount a 250-WATT METAL HALIDE BOX FLOOD and a MOUNTING BRACKET to illuminate your large back yard.

Designing low voltage lighting systems for big yards.

I have a 240'' long driveway that I''d like to line with low-voltage lights, but after reading through some of the archive about voltage drop, etc, it appears I can''t just put 1 transformer at the house and run a single wire down the side of the driveway. Would it make sense to have 110volt service installed in the area and run multiple sets of lights or is there a better/more cost effective way? Thanks.

Well that's a good question. Whether you go low voltage or line voltage, you still have to dig a ditch and install the wiring. UF CABLE or LOW VOLTAGE WIRE or PVC conduit should be buried 18" to meet National Electrical Requirements. Rigid conduit, on the other had only has a 6" requirement. So let''s look at our options.

If you go line voltage or 120 volt, you can install a variety or PAGODA LIGHTS or PATH LIGHTS without the worry of voltage issues, provided you use #12 or #10 wire.

If you go low voltage or 12 volt, you will have to use a MULT-TAP TRANSFORMER, home run wiring and #10/2 or #8/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE to overcome voltage drop issues. Click here to CALCULATE WIRE SIZES and to learn more about DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS. We have many PATH LIGHTS to choose from.

When Concord Fans & Lighting was conceived in 1983, it was with the idea that a "Commitment to Excellence" would be the goal and foundation of the company. Everything Concord does is based on that original foundation. Quality of product is always at the top of the list. Quality control begins at the factory level. While the factories are in production with a fan, random spot checks are made according to the quantity of product being produced. The fans are put together, and completely checked by the Quality Control staff. All components of our fans have their own Quality ratings standards that they must meet. If a critical component is found to have a problem, the entire production run is stopped and checked. A new item is 100% pulled and inspected.

When a factory shipment arrives at Concord's door, 2% of the product is pulled and inspected in house by our Quality Assurance staff. 100% is pulled and inspected if it is a new product. All fans are hung in our state of the art laboratory just as they would be by the consumer, using only the parts supplied in the box. They are then tested for stability, air movement, noise and appearance. This insures that if anything has gotten passed the Quality Team at the Factory, they will catch it here before anything is ever put into the consumer's hands.

The key to the life expectancy of a fan lies in its motor. Concord has spent years redesigning and refining our motors to produce the quietest, coolest running motor in the industry. At the factory, on the production line and finished product assembly line, our motors are 100% quality control inspected, twice.

Heat is the biggest enemy of a ceiling fan motor. Concord fan motors are specially designed and sized to match the sweep and pitch of each fan, insuring a low heat operating environment within the motor. Factory lubricated and permanently sealed precision ball bearings installed with bearing retainers provide years of silent, maintenance free use. The switch housings are pre-wired with Molex plug-in connectors, providing ease of installation and swift handling of potential problem areas.

Finally, Concord's motor housings are stamped, lathed and instrument matched to insure a perfect fit between the various pieces and triple plated and double lacquered to provide for lasting beauty.

Some of the quality features of Concord fans include:

Noise Free Speed Control Method - Concord uses precisely manufactured triple capacitors with Underwriter's Laboratory (U.L.) tested and approved quality to insure and guarantee all fans not to hum or buzz.

3 Speed & Reversible - All Concord fans come equipped with three speeds-high, medium, low. And all of our fans are reversible to provide re-circulation of warm air trapped at the ceiling level during the Winter season.

Remote Control Compatible - All Concord fans, with the exception of the Nautika, are remote control compatible. Some models come with remote controls included. Light Kit Adaptable All fans, with the exception of the Nautika, are fully light kit adaptable. The detachable switch housing unit makes adding a light kit a quick and easy installation.

Motor Shipping Block - Factory installed motor shipping blocks protect motors during transit.

Colors - Concord carries the largest selection of colors in the industry. Decorating trends are followed closely to insure current popular colors are available. From traditional to modern, we have over 30 colors to fit each consumer's needs. The finishing process includes triple plating and powder coat finish.
