My Rotary Club has just renovated a small downtown park as part of its Rotary Centennial celebration. On the edge of the park are 4 deciduous trees (Oak?) that are about 15 feet tall. There are electrical outlets at the base of each tree. We would like to do year-round twinkle lighting on these trees to add safety and overall appeal. The Public Works Director is not very enthusiastic, fearing an ongoing maintenance problem of broken bulbs. Would LED be the answer. What product? What cost per linear foot? Can you give me some guidance.thanks.jack
Unfortunately, the public works director is probably right. I agree that the twinkle lights would be very attractive, however the kids will eventually pull them off or they will be cut by weed whackers. The LED STRING LIGHTS are certainly more long lasting and would be less of a maintenance problem. Not a good idea for a park.
You might want to consider installing some GRADE LEVEL UP LIGHTS to showcase the trees or perhaps some MERCURY VAPOR MOON LIGHTS mounted in the trees themselves pointing down. SEE OUR GALLERY OF IMAGES FOR IDEAS.

Im having a room remolded and 13 recessed lights installed. The contracter want to put in high volt (cheaper) thant lowvoltage. What is the difference, is there buzzing with one vs the other, does high dim as welll as low etc?
LOW VOLTAGE RECESSED LIGHTS are more expensive than STANDARD RECESSED LIGHTS because of the low voltage transformer, trim and lamp The big difference between the fixtures is the size of the lights, the performance and the adjust ability .
You should consider using both types for your room remodel. Let the incandescent lights be your general lighting and the halogen lights for your accent and art lighting. Both can be controlled with a DIMMER for mood setting. It must be a very large room to need 13 lights! Check out our GALLERY SECTION for some ideas.

I was recently in a large home improvement store of which I will not name, and I noticed that they already had out
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS AND HOLIDAY LIGHTING PRODUCTS and it is not even October yet!
So I took the liberty to check out their products and the pricing. Some items were not bad, some were great and most were about average. The
LIGHTED SCULPTURES, particularily the small holiday lighted sculptures, were sparse and over priced. The
PRE-LIT CHRISTMAS TREES were a little high as well.
So I went on the web and did a little research on my own. I found Residential Landscape Lighting & Design offers a great selection of
HOLIDAY LIGHTING PRODUCTS and
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS at great prices. They are currently having a
BLOWOUT SALE on select items. It is a perfect time to buy bulk
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS at huge savings. If you are crazy about decorating your home or office for Christmas, you won't want to miss this

Can you run standard lights off of a low voltage transformer, or do you have to have special low voltage lights. I have Juno IC-1 can lights in my eaves and would like them to be low voltage. If this is possible please provide a recommendation from your product line. I am working with 8 can lights. Also, do you have a recommendation for a good general purpose landscape (ground lights) transformer? Thanks,
It is not a good idea to modify a recessed lighting fixture because you will void the warranty and UL listing. This is very important should you have a fire. The insurance adjuster will research the model and the way it was installed to see if it is done correctly. If not, you are on your own regarding the claim. Is it really worth it?
If you want to go low voltage, check our our HALO H1499RT/1420P recessed down lights. They have an onboard transformer and use a MR16 lamp.

I reviewed your FAQ''s regarding indoor step lighting and found it extremely useful so first off, thank you. Now, I am thinking about the low voltage rope light to light approximately 13 steps. I was only curious if there is a way to switch or connect a motion detector to the rope light (at the top and bottom of the stairway)since I may not want the light on all the time and only when in use to go downstairs. I was thinking about the step lights and found they are generally cased outdoor lights and the rope light may be my way of lighting the steps. Also, my builder does not personally light through carpet (mounting cased lights through carpeting). Would a rope light produce any hazards if they are mounted to carpeting at the edges (such as fire hazards) or should they be mounted more on the wall above carpeting? Thank you for your time. Mike.
Using ROPE LIGHTING on stairways is a very effective form of accent and safety lighting especially when the light source is concealed from normal view angles. There is not enough heat generated to be a fire hazard. The problem lies in making splices that are enclosed in a junction box which is hard to do on stairs If you have access to a closet or storage under the stairs it can be done safely. I would use our ROPE LIGHT MOUNTING TRACK or MOUNTING CLIPS to support the rope lights. You can use a MOTION SENSOR or DIMMER CONTROL in lieu of a switch. If you decide to purchase the rope lighting from us, and we hop you do, please order the pearl white option for better results. Thanks!

We have sveral dogs on a 1/3 acre. I have tried (5)150 watts with halogen bulbs. These did not work.I would like to have one light at each corner of the house - outside -and a light in the middle with a sensor that I can wire all of them together. I want it so all the lights will come on when the sensor is tripped. Our outside mesaurments are 40ft wide by 40ft depth.I heard that I ned a sodium setup? Thanks so much
HID LIGHT SOURCES such as high pressure sodium, metal halide, mecury vapor and fluorescent fixtures do not work well with motion detectors. They require a warm up period to reach full intensity and will not restrike again until they have cooled off. Halogen lights, on the other hand, are better suited for this type of application because they will go on and off without delay.

Hi, I''m wiring post lights with 2 circuits. One circuit controls the lights and the other controls the plugs on the lights. How many wires do i need to run in the conduit?
You will need four wires in the 1/2" conduit. Two black, one white and one green ground wire. For a 20 amp load you should use #12 gauge wire and for a 15 amp load you should use #14 gauge wire.

recommended location and height off of floor. Can it be mounted on ceiling
Sure, the FIREX SMOKE/CO2 ALARM can be mounted on the ceiling at any height. You should place the device near stairways or the return air duct in your home. Other devices can be used in bedrooms, living rooms and family rooms.
These devices are both 120 volt and battery operated in the event of a power loss. They can also be connected together so that if one goes off, all of the alarms will go off. I have these smoke alarms in my own home!

The archives are an excellent resouce, thank-you. I found much on low-voltage systems, but not what I need for 120v. So, I''d like to ask the experts the following: I have 1200 feet of driveway. I have an underground 10/3 wire running the entire length. Starting 200 feet from the house, the line pops up every 100 feet for a future light post. The intent is to provide enough light to guide an auto down the dark driveway. I need to finish the installation job. Question 1: What watt bulbs can I use for 11 single fixture light posts? Question 2: What amp breaker do I use in my panel box?? Question 3: Is this system design going to work, or is it under-designed, ie. 10/3 wire, 1200 feet, 11 fixtures, 120v feed from house panel??? Last Question: What would be the specs on the manual switch and automatic photo sensor to use???? Thanks for your help in advance.
Congratulations on running 10/3 wire for your driveway project! We can make that work!
Since you used 10/3 that means you can have two 30-amp dedicated circuits with a ground. You will need a TIME CLOCK (double pole, single throw) to handle both circuits. Starting from the far end of the run, connect four lights to one circuit and the other seven lights to the other circuit. This will help balance the load and minimize the effects of VOLTAGE DROP.
If you use INCANDESCENT LAMPS I would not exceed 100-watts per fixture. If you go FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS (warm white) you have no restrictions. We have a great selection of POST TOP LIGHT FIXTURES and LANTERNS if you are still looking for the equipment.
Send us some pictures of the finished project!

What is the reason that the power pack must be installed outside? I have a partial basement. Would it be OK to mount them in the basement?
All electrical products must be tested and listed by Underwriter''s laboratory or ETL as to the specifications and applications for which they are designed. OUTDOOR LIGHTING TRANSFORMERS are listed for outdoor use, hence the warning. If you provide adequate ventilation around the transformer and penetrate the wall with conduit, use a GFCI RECEPTACLE, you should be fine.

When the imagineers at Disney wanted a special
lighting projector to enhance the interior of the Parrot Cay restaurant, on the cruise ship Disney Magic, they contacted Phantom Lighting Systems. What the Disney designers envisioned was a small recessed optical framing projector that would project patterns of light onto the walls and draperies to create a magical effect. They needed a framing projector that would project focused light, fit into a tight space, produce very little heat, operate at 220 volts and ship quickly. In order to meet Disney's specific needs, the technicians at Phantom Lighting fabricated a custom holder that would accept a stainless steel pattern filter, or "gobo," which is typically used in theatrical lighting.
In addition, the Disney designers specified and are using
Phantom Strip Lights in some of the many display cases located in a boutique on the ship. The small linear light source with remote transformers was perfect for the application.
In addition to creating a dazzling theatrical environment for the Disney company, the Phantom™ Contour Projector, with its control and precision, is the perfect compliment to your fine art collection. It truly brings objects of art to life - colors become more vivid and rich, forms more lustrous and distinct. The splendor of your art will dazzle you when you add the artistic illumination provided by the
Phantom™ Contour Projector to creatively affect the palette of mood, whether bright and illustrious or subtle and warm.
This form of art lighting intensifies the magnificence of your art with a contoured light beam that flawlessly embraces the distinct outline of your individual pieces of art. Through the use of its standard or custom designed templates and an unbroken line of direct lighting, the Phantom™ Contour Projector provides luminescence for single, multiple and irregularly shaped art objects. Three different
art lighting applications - one projector. With cutting-edge technology, this unseen projector can be used as far as 30 feet away to as close as just a few feet. The richness of your art will illuminate your environment with beauty and splendor. Additionally, Phantom offers five different housings to meet the needs of any project, from a remodel to a top access to surface mount.
Because needs are diverse, the
Contour Projector provides options to fit almost any situation--whether you're one of the world's leading entertainment companies or simply looking to beautify your own home. For more information regarding Phantom Lighting System, please visit

I was looking at installing some parking lot lights. The area i want to cover is 160ft.x120ft. What would you recommend. Also can you get the poles powdercoated of aluminum? Also what is the coverage area of your outdoor light kits?ThanksDave

I would like to know if it is possible and/or advisable to dim a low voltage transformer. I am installing line and low voltage lighting in my backyard and am leaning towards using the LutronRA system to control all my lighting. This wireless system allows me to set up different landscape lighting settings but is predicated on being able to dim low voltage lighting. Do you have any suggestions on what type of a transformer would work?(p.s- I plan to use malibu low voltage lighting).
It is easier to dim a MAGNETIC TRANSFORMER with a LUTRON RADIO RA DIMMERS than a ELECTRONIC TRANSFORMER.
Please check out our LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS. They are a complete solution to your outdoor lighting needs. You get the lights, wire, transformer and the lamps in the kit.

My landscape contractor suggests he install 7 Lustrorame uplights and 5 Saguaro petite pathlights in my backyard. This would include a 600W transformer, photocell and timer. The transformer would also accomodate future front yard lighting.Questions:(1) why can''t I do zone lighting? Sometimes I may want just the uprights on and not the pathlights, front yard and not the backyard, etc. Does this require separate transformers for each zone?(2)My wife asks, why can''t we have indoor light switches for each of the zones? Why not? This would nix the timer, which is okay, because some nights I won''t want any lights on.Is it possible to have such a flexible system? Contractor is good with stone work but not sure he''s competent on this issue. Thanks for your insights.
There is only two ways to have zoned lighting using a LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING TRANSFORMER. The first way is to have two transformers, one for each zone. The other is to install standard switches on the low voltage cables after the transformer. That way you can have or both on and still use the built in timer to control the lights. To do this correctly, the switches should be in a WEATHERPROOF BOX with a WEATHERPROOF SWITCH COVER.
You might want to look at our PREPACKAGED LIGHTING KITS as an alternative to what your contractor is suggesting. We have a great selection of OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING EQUIPMENT.
God luck and we appreciate your business!

I have one 700 Watt Transformer. Each line runs no more than 300 watts with no more than 275'' line length of 14 gauge low voltage line. With only a few days lighted, 3 bulbs burned out on seperate lines. Any trougble shooting tips?
My rule of thumb for low voltage lighting is no more than 120 watts of light on a 100 foot run of 12/2 cable. See our HOW TO DESIGN 12 VOLT LIGHTING SYSTEMS for more specific information. 14 guage wire is very inadequate for your installation. You will need 12/2 LANDSCAPE CABLE or 10/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE to solve your problems.

I started putting rope lighting under my deck that leads to my house. The problem is that you can see the rope''s path from above as it shows through the spaces between 2x4''s. Is there some type of narrow "shading" material that I can put over the rope to block the light from shining up? I thought of maybe using inch wide black electrical tape.
Adding tape to ROPE LIGHT is not a good idea. After a while the heat will cause the glue to release, leaving you with a sticky mess.
You might try using some of our MOUNTING TRACK painted black or adding a 1" x 2" wood reveal to hide the lights.

A contractor recently installed a Lutron AYFSQ-F-WH as a speed control for two ceing fan on a 3-way switch. The fans were not working properly. When i read the details I find that the switch is mad for a single fan. Is there a control 3-way control available to control two fans.
The LUTRON ariadni fan speed control that was installed is designed for one fan only. Lutron does make a Fan-Speed Control - Skylark - S2-LF that is designed for multiple fans.

I would like to use rope lighting under my landscape border. I have seen both line voltage (120V) and Low-voltage rope lighting. I would like to install low-voltage for energy savings. However, do you have any recommendation? Also, are they rated for outdoor use?Thank you. Juan
You can use 12 VOLT ROPE LIGHT, however you will need to supply a power feed every 16'' to maintain voltage levels. If you use 120 VOLT ROPE LIGHTING you will need a GFCI RECEPTACLE for protection and safety.

Hello,I am about to install some landscape lights and wanted some last minute advice to maximize quality. I am going to run about 300 watts of flood fixtures only. This varies from 20w to 50w (Everything Malibu). I plan to use 1 300 watt transformer. In addition, I have a plentiful supply of 10g wire so I plan to use that. The farthest light is probably 40 ft from the transformer. My question is given the wire gauge being used, is it still recommended to run maybe two wires back to the transformer to split the load to two wires instead of snaking one wire to all lights. Thanks For The Advice
It is always best to split up the loads into several feeds back to the transformer. Whenever possible, put no more than 120 watts on 100 feet. Here are some LOW VOLTAGE WIRING EXAMPLES to help you.

the house I live in has Malibu lighting going all the way around the house up close. the one transformer I have went out but the other one is fine. how do I find a transformer that can handle the length of the lights? they don''t ever say so what is the average distance will a transformer go before the lights fade in power?
Check out our "HOW TO DESIGN A 12 VOLT LIGHTING SYSTEM" page for helpful information regarding sizing low voltage wires and transformers. You must also be aware of VOLTAGE DROP issues when you purchase your new TRANSFORMER.

Two problems, 1 solution?i want to operate (1) backyard lighting w/dimmer,and (2)a water pump, on the same switch. is there such a switch.
Use the existing switch in the house a master override switch. Then install a DIMMER CONTROL on the light and a switch on the pump. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

I have retainer walls encircling my patio. I wanted to put lights on top of wall after Mason has finished capping the wall off. Does wiring need to run from top of wall all the way to the ground? Mason will be laying down one more row of cinder blocks. Previous rows of blocks already topped off with concrete. However patio floor is not finished. He is laying down gravel bed right now. Can lighting be installed at top of wall now or is floor installation the best way to go now? My preference is to have both top lights and a few wall or ground lights. What lights can you recommend?
You can have your mason install some 3/4" PVC conduits from the base up and across the wall for POST TOP LIGHTING. You might consider some LOW VOLTAGE WALL LIGHTS that would look nice along the bottom of the inside wall. They are low voltage and require a TRANSFORMER. One last option is BOLLARD STYLE LIGHTS that would wire up from the bottom up.

I have installed 12 ga. low volt line and lights. Can I splice rope light into that line without a transformer specifically for the rope light? I have a 900 watt transformer, using one 300 watt run right now.
The low voltage wire that you have installed is actually rated for up to 300 volts. However, that wire does not have a ground wire and does pose a hazard. If you intend to use the 12/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE for your 120 VOLT ROPE LIGHT I would strongly recommend that you install a GFCI RECEPTACLE to prevent someone from getting hurt.
