Outdoor flood lighting a residence with a soft warm wash of light.

I need 2 outdoor flood lights to moderately illuminate the front of our home that is approx. 120 feet across. What type of light do you recommend and what wattage? We don''t want to brightly illuminate, just a medium lighting for security and safety. Thanks!

If you are planning to install the lights out in the yard, shining back towards the house, I would go with a couple HALOGEN FLOOD LIGHTS with an optional MIGHTY POST MOUNTING STAKE. I would install a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL to regulate the intensity of the lights. That way you can not only extend the lamp life, but set them just the way you like them.

You might also consider a LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KIT a another way to accomplish your goals.

Christmas light, santa claus, christmas decorations, outdoor christmas lighting & outdoor christmas decorations

I moved to a new home the middle of last year. Before I knew it, it was Christmas! I had no idea that the entire neighborhood went crazy with Christmas lighting. It looked like a winter wonderland. Needless to say, my house was the laughing stock of the neighborhood. I am determined not to let that happen again. What advice can you give a guy who is training for a big Christmas lighting display?

Congratulations on your new home. Sorry to hear your first Christmas was a little rough. I know from experience that CHRISTMAS LIGHTING is big business and many people live for the experience. I know in my neighborhood it is fierce competition.

Since you are starting from scratch on your house you might stick with the basics this year and add on more items over time or as your budget allows. Here are some tips and suggestions for a successful Christmas lighting program:

CHECK YOUR CIRCUITS
Do a physical count of the receptacles around your house and identify the breaker size. Nothing is worse than installing a new Christmas lighting system only to have the breaker trip on Christmas Day! Depending on the size of your lighting display you might need up to (4-8) 20 amp dedicated circuits. Contact a local electrician to help you with this process before you complete your design. This is the heart of a good Christmas lighting job.

TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR HOUSE
Take a digital picture of your house and print several copies on plain white paper. This will now be your blueprint or roadmap for your design that will show run lengths and plug locations. Now you can start developing a design.

MEASURE THE HOUSE
Measure the width of the house and particularly the entire roof line for some basic light strings. The C7 & C9 BULK LIGHT STRINGS are a perfect way to fabricate a continuous run of lights without unsightly splices that could be dangerous. It also allows you to run the fixture wire directly to you first dedicated receptacle on the house. We have SHINGLE CLIPS FOR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS to make your job easy and fun. In addition to outlining the roof with Christmas lights, you can also illuminate vertical elements of the house such as outside corners, doorways, chimneys and other architectural features of your home. Be sure and buy extra C7 & C9 LAMPS so that you have plenty of replacement lamps. Personally, I like the transparent lamps the best. They look bright, rich and full of Christmas cheer! Remember, only buy Christmas lighting products that carry a UL Rating from a reputable manufacturer.

LIGHT THE SHRUBS AND TREES
Now that you are down off the ladder, it's time to get the kid's help installing CHRISTMAS TWINKLE LIGHTS & NET LIGHTS on the ornamental trees and shrubs across the front of the house. Don't go crazy trying to get the MINI LIGHTS perfectly positioned on each shrub. It is more important that you don't run the lights in a straight line, but rather using an alternating approach to spread the lights around for balance and symmetry. Nobody likes seeing the wires during the day, so concentrate on the lights and how effectively they will look at night. You will need to make any final adjustments to your CHRISTMAS LIGHTS after dark.

INSTALL SOME SCULPTURES
The final element of your Christmas lighting display is LIGHTED YARD SCULPTURES and other Christmas decorations such as ANGELS, BOWS, CANDY CANES, GIFT BOXES, LIGHTED WREATHS, LIGHTED GARLAND and HANGING LIGHTED ORNAMENTS. If you have a large patio or terrace you might even consider a LIGHTED CHRISTMAS TREE or several ARTIFICIAL TREES.

HELPFUL HINTS

Buy early and save big money! Buy after Christmas and save big money! If you wait until November or even December you will pay more and feel rushed. Have some fun and do it right!

Have your electrician install TIMER CONTROLS. That way you don't have to worry about going outside in the middle of the night to unplug your Christmas lights.

Soffit lighting using halogen style recessed fixtures in line and low voltage.

Doing a house remodel, enclosing the eves, would like to install wall wash lights ..have room for cans. Some are 2nd story..should we use 120 or low voltage? Which has longer bulb life? Do you have fixtures/suggestions?

If you are looking for long life lamps, I would go with a halogen light fixture. HALOGEN LIGHTS come in many sizes and several voltages. LOW VOLTAGE HALOGEN LIGHTS are generally smaller, but may be more trouble during servicing as the must be disassembled for re-lamping. Line voltage RECESSED HALOGEN LIGHTS come in 4", 6" and 7 1/2" sizes. They can be serviced off of a ladder as well as with a re-lamping pole. Both the MR16 and PAR lamps are available in spots, medium flood, flood and wide flood beam patterns. Let us know if you need help narrowing your selection of RESIDENTIAL LIGHTING FIXTURES.

Dim lights on my low voltage lighting system look terrible.

I added lights to my existing landscape but the new lights are dim and so not produce the desired effect - they are 11 W. I returned the lights for a different design and also upgraded to a 300W transformer but no luck - still dim. What can I do now?

The problem is not the transformer or the fixtures. You have a classic case of voltage drop due to the total load versus the wire size you are using. Check out our POWER CABLE CALCULATOR located on our INFORMATION PAGE to learn more about correcting your problem.

Mounting stakes are typically used to mount path lights and other low voltage lighting fixtures.

What is the customary method of installation of path lights, if a fixture comes with an in ground stake how should that stake be installed in the ground? Is it standard practice to bed the stake in concrete or gravel?

How you anchor the stake really depends on the soil and traffic conditions. I generally just hammer the stake into the ground. If you use concrete or anchor it to well, it will break the stem when it gets kicked or hit. Try using the stake and see how it works. Should you decide to purchase a different type of MOUNTING STAKE we have many to choose from.

Sebco buck and boost 12 volt lighting transformer wiring information.

I wanted to confirm that my landscaper connected my SEBCO transformer correctly. I have a SEBCO 500W 12V (#1084) Transformer with (2) 25 amp circuit protectors. I have two cables (10/2 gauge) running from the transformer to power two 250 watt circuits. Each circuit breaker has a red wire connected to one terminal (labeled X2 on one breaker, X4 on the other breaker). One wire from each cable is connected to the other terminal of each breaker (I presume this being the "hot" wire as these wires are connected to the black wires on each light on the circuit). The neutral wire from each cable is joined together along with the red wires labeled X1 and X3 into a four wire bundle and tied together with a wire nut. Should the neutral wires plus X1 & X3 wires be joined together this way (it''s a "bulky" connection)or should the neutral wire from each cable be joined only with one return wire on the transformer (X1 or X3)? If the latter, which cable should be connected to X1 and which to X3? Thank you

On a Buck and Boost transformer you have several ways to configure the wiring to vary the output voltage. For example, on the secondary side, if you connect X1 and X3 together and X2 and X4 together you get a 12 volt output. On the other hand, if you connect X2 and X3 together and use X1 and X4 as your outputs, you get 24 volts. The same is true on the primary side for switching between 110 and 220 volt inputs. Either way, one side of the output should run through the circuit breakers. And you are right, sometimes it does make for a bulky connection.

Puck light transformers with circuit breaker protection.

I''ll be purchasing 35 puck lights for a kitchen - can you recommend an indoor transformer to power them - they are 20w bulbs?

That''s a big job for PUCK LIGHTS! You will need to run several feeds from the TRANSFORMER to multiple groupings of lights. This transformer has (4) 25-amp fuses which will allow you to combine the various feeds to properly distribute the power. These lights always look better when recessed under the cabinets. By adding a section of wood below the cabinets you can create a void to run the wiring.

Low voltage lighting system design assistance and recommendations.

I will be installing 20 18W low voltage recessed ambient lighting in stone posts along a 700 foot long driveway. The end of the driveway will have a low voltage gate operator calling for 14 gauge direct burial wiring to backup and charge its own 12 volt battery. Should I consider a loop, or multiple wires, and what size transformer should I acquire? Thanks Jay

You should be considering running 120 volt power using 12/2 UF OR 10/2 UF CABLE out to your gate operator so that you can install a 12 volt transformer at both ends of the installation. That way you can use the same ditch to run both sets of wires and still maintain your voltage on the low voltage system. And yes, run a loop system on both transformers using 10/2 LANDSCAPE CABLE. Another option is to use a MULTI-TAP TRANSFORMER that allows you to bump up the voltage to offset the effects of voltage drop. Check out our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS information page for more assistance on the effects of voltage drop.

Low voltage outdoor lighting kits are perfect for lighting the facade of homes.

What is the best way to light the facade of my home? It is constructed with Austin stone and stucco.

The best way to light the facade of a home is to use multiple wide spread INCANDESCENT LIGHTS or HALOGEN UP LIGHTS mounted close to the foundation of your home. Used in conjunction with a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL you can set the intensity to a soft warm wash of light. By grazing the light across the stone, you enhance the detail by showing the textures.

To assist you in lighting facades, buildings or landscaping we have created a series of LOW VOLTAGE OUTDOOR LIGHTING KITS that contain everything you need to install your lighting system.

Lighting loads for low voltage outdoor lighting systems.

I have about 350W of 12V lighting on one circuit. My 300W transformer is not putting out enough power to fully light all of the lights. If possible, I do not want to split up the circuit. Is it possible to use a 600W dual circuit transformer to power my single circuit (wire both outputs to the same circuit)? or would I need to purchase a single circuit transformer?Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

The only way to split the load is with two or more feeds from the lights going back to the transformer. If you are using 12/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE you have exceeded the capacity of the wire. 325/12=27.08 amps. 12/2 CABLE is rated for 20 amps. 10/2 CABLE is rated for 30 amps. Dimmer control wiring information and grounding prodedures.

The box has 4 switches in it, one is a dimmer that needs replaced. I purchased a single pole dimmer that has two black wires and one green wire. The old switch had just two black wires. One of the black wires is wrapped around a bare copper wire and another black from the box. Should I wrap the new green wire around that bare copper wire along with a black wire from the new switch?

NO, the green wire is for grounding the DIMMER CONTROL to the box for safety reasons. Ground wires are left either green or bare for identification. DIMMER CONTROL WIRING DIAGRAM

Motion lights, detectors, remote control switch & security lighting.

I have an idea for outdoor security lighting. I'd like to mount a number of regular incandescent lights to illuminate the place like a prison yard under certain circumstances. I want a normal wall switch someplace, probably near one of the doors. But, I'd also like to be able to kick the lights on by remote control from the bedside. Based on the plan I have in mind, the system would need to handle about 3000 watts worth of bulbs. Can't seem to locate the hardware needed to do this. Anyone know of a source?

You could always use a power line carrier device like an X10 switch that can be controlled remotely or simply us a MOTION DETECTOR LIGHT. If you want to turn them on and leave them on, you simply toggle the wall switch twice to switch to manual mode. You can reverse the order to turn them off. That way you can have your security light and floodlight in one package. Take a look at RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE LIGHTING & DESIGN for more information on motion lights, sensors and detectors.

X10 device used to control outdoor landscape lighting transformer remotely.

I would like to install a dimmer switch on my outdoor low voltage lighting that I can control via Remote control! I have found this switch (X10 Pro Inductive Dimming Wall Switch Model: XPDI3-IW) on X10's website. Can you tell me if this will work or do you have other options for me. I have not bought the Transformer yet, but I figure I will be looking to buy 2-300 Watt

The X10 is a good product, however it is not rated for outdoor use. You would be better off installing the device in a dry location, perhaps at the breaker panel on the circuit supplying power to the transformer. Since the X10 device is a power line carrier and not an IR device, you can install it just about anywhere in the house.

Please take a look at our selection of LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING TRANSFORMERS and LUTRON DIMMING PRODUCTS for other ideas and solutions.

Installing conduits for recessed step lights in a concrete wall.

I am currently in the process of building and pouring several small garden walls that will have recessed lighting fixtures cast into the concrete. I will be casting in place the light housing(s) which has/have accommodation for electrical conduit. My question is My question is how to run the electrical wiring to and from the cast in place recessed fixtures. Should the conduit come up vertically and run through the gravel bed into the base of the wall and to the fixture? Alternatively, should the conduit run horizontally through the wall and attach to the fixture? Or should the conduit be placed so that it invades the concrete as minimally as possible? i.e. run along the outside surface of the concrete wall and pierce it only when necessary to connect to the recessed fixture ...any thoughts on this application are greatly appreciated..Robert

It really boils down to the orientation of the holes on the fixture housing. By code, you should not have more than (4) ninety degree bends in any on run of conduit. If you do decide to stub up from the bottom, make sure you tape off the conduits and install pull strings in advance of the pour. Check out our STEP LIGHTS before you go to far! Good Luck

Xenon kitchen and halogen under cabinet lights that are reasonably priced and easy to install.

I am a small time remodeling contractor who is looking for a company who manufactures a low cost, easy to install, good quality undercabinet halogen or xenon light fixture. What do you recommend?

I think AMERICAN LIGHTING has some of the most reasonably priced and well made XENON TASK LIGHTS and HALOGEN UNDER CABINET LIGHTS you will find. Not only are they easy to install, they come in several colors that other manufacturers don't have like BRUSHED STAINLESS, WHITE and BRONZE.

In addition to undercabinet lights AMERICAN LIGHTING manufactures many products including SEASONAL LIGHTS, LIGHTED SCULPTURES, ROPE LIGHTS, TWINKLE LIGHTS, C7 & C9 LIGHTING STRINGS and many other HOLIDAY ITEMS. You might want to consider offering some seasonal lighting to your clients!

Door bell wiring and troubleshooting door bell chime buttons.

Hello. I took the wires off the doorbell ringing unit because we''re remodeling. Now I can''t seem to rewire the doorbell so that it is controlled by the actual doorbell outside. I have four wires going to the ringer unit, blue w/white (which seems to have the juice coming to it) white w/blue, white w/orange, and orange w/white. I have an Edwards ringer unit It has three posts, a "T", a "1" and a "2". If I put the blue w/white on the T post and the white/orange on either 1 or 2. The doorbell rings right away and continues to "fire", in other words the ringer doesn't relax again. The doorbell is not being controlled by the outside doorbell. Any suggestions.

I would buy a volt meter. Find the power and connect to terminal T. The other wires go to the buttons at the 2 doors. One will ring the chime once, ding, use this for the back door. The other will ring the chime twice, ding-dong. If you go in the attic and find the transformer, that color wire should go in the T. You can also take the door bell buttons out and check the color of the wires. All you are doing is making a continuous loop circuit. Hope that helps!

Church steeple lighting using a metal halide spot fixture.

Do you carry a narrow beam spot light we could use to light a cross on a steeple 60'' form mounting point. If not could you direct to where one could obtain these. Thanks in advance Stan

We have a 175-WATT METAL HALIDE SPOT FIXTURE that would be a good choice for lighting the church steeple. You can mount the fixture on the box using the hub mount option or remote the ballast for a cleaner look. This lamp has a tremedous focused light output and most certainly do the trick. Depending on the viewing angles, you should use two or more to do it right.

Send us some pictures of the finished job!

Soffit lighting using small low voltage down lights.

I know you recommend FOC SL-37 for the exterior soffit application. What type of lamp (spot or flood) would you recommend for lighting brick coins? The soffit height is around 9 to 10 feet above finish grade. Thanks!!!

I would suggest that you use the spot lamp for the best results. Keep in mind that this FOC SL-37 fixture does not adjust allowing you to fine tune the spots of light.

You might take a look at the HALO 1419 TRIM and HALO H1499RT HOUSING for a more flexible solution. The fixtures operate at 120 volts and utilize a MR16 LAMP. You can get beam spreads in 9 degree,10 degree, 12 degree, 25 degree and 38 degree spreads.

Motion detectors that operate on 12 volts or low voltage current.

My yard is lit by small 50W outdoor lights placed randomly. The lights are powered by the usual 300W power supply. I would like to use this same low voltage source to go to a motion detector and a separate light. If motion is detected I would like this dedicated light to turn on. I am trying to keep the racoons out of my fish pond. I thought if the motion detector would pick them up when they come into the yard about 3AM and turn on the light it would frighten them away from our koi fish ... which they catch and eat. Any ideas?

We have a great little 12 VOLT MOTION DETECTOR that is perfect for your application. Just use one of your 12 VOLT LANDSCAPE LIGHTS and you are in business!

Dimming magnetic transformers for outdoor lighting applications.

I have a 300w magnetic transformer, and I would like to dim only 30 watts of the load (i.e. 2 lights out of a total of 12 on the transformer). What type of dimmer would be required and/or can I use a standard dimmer (or even a potentiometer from Rad Shack)? Since I''m dimming only 10% of the load, I can''t see why the type of dimmer would matter. Please let me know if my ignorance on this topic is showing. Thx! - Rob

You would have to do something very creative to dim only a partial load from a single MAGNETIC TRANSFORMER. You could add a section of wire to the ones you want dimmed to lower the output (voltage drop) or perhaps install device from Radio Shack that would limit the voltage. The easist thing would be to install lower wattage LAMPS, which is the same thing as dimming them. If you decide to dim the entire load, you will need a MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL FROM LUTRON to do it properly.

Low voltage relay switches salavaged for spare parts.

Below is archives I read on your site that is the same as my problem (1960s house built with low voltage switching. I removed the switch to find a model number as indicated in the archive below however, I cannot find any model number other that 3A 25V on the switch "Made in the USA". I am looking to update the look and are hoping that coverplates can be found in optional colors too. Regards,BruceFrom Archive low voltage lighting I bought an older house that has a 24 volt DC lighting system intergrated into a standard 110/220 AC system. There are several transformer 110 AC to 24 DC wired thoughout. But the system is old and I can find low volt replacement switches. The original switches are G.E.25V 3A. What can I use as replacement switches? or even better how can I get rid of this system without re-wiring the whole house? You bought a house that incorporates relay switching. Unfortunatley, you can only use the GE switches that are designed for your system. To bypass the system and install conventional wall box controls it will require rewiring the switch legs from the relay panel back to each room of the house. We have access to replacement parts if you can provide me specific GE part numbers.

There is not a new updated device that will work with your system. The only switches we have are used and recycled form older homes. We salvaged these switches just to handle repairs in homes such as yours. Give customer service a call at 800-239-2939 for information on these relay switches.

Wall mounted motion detector that works on a three way switching system.

We have a room that is lit with an electronic-ballist, flourescent light. The light can be turned on from either entrance to the room. We are looking for a motion sensor that can work with a regular switch (in a 3-way configuration). We would also like to have a manual override capability on the motion sensor. Does your WSD Motion Detector have these capabilities? Is it possible to get more information about it (i.e. a copy of the spec sheet)?Thank you.

Our WSD - SSD MOTION DETECTOR SWITCH is designed for 3-way and 4-way switching schemes. The wiring instructions that come with the switch are very clear and easy to understand. You must install the switch in the room where it can sense motion or it will constantly be turning off and on. It comes in white, ivory and almond colors. I am not positive about the override function, but I would be surprised if it did not have that feature.

Sebco transformer for outdoor lighting applications

I am interested in your 900 watt transformer, but I did have one question. Since this is a 900 watt transformer if I were to hook up only 200 watts worth of lighting would it draw 900 watts worth of power. Thanks,Dave Murphy

The SEBCO 900 WATT TRANSFORMER is a good buy. You will have some electricity consumption to power up the coil in any outdoor or indoor transformer. However, the draw is related more to the actual load or total wattage than the coils.

Accent lighting a hanging wall weaving.

what size lamp should i use for a framed weaving25" x 60" ??

You could go with a surface mounted PICTURE LIGHT like a TRADITIONAL or SLIMLINE style or a recessed LOW VOLTAGE ACCENT LIGHT. This kind of fixture won''t give you a even coverage of light.

For your framed weaving, I would recommend using a RECESSED MR16 ACCENT LIGHT with a HALOGEN LAMP and a LINEAR BEAM ELONGATOR LENS to shape the light to a rectangle.

Halogen floodlights that look good on soffits and can be dimmed.

I am looking for a specification grade Halogen Floodlight in the range of 300-500 Watts that can be soffit mounted. Also if there are other technologies besides halogen that can be dimmed and used in a exterior flood application I would like to know about those as well. Thanks for your help.

For a dimming light source, HALOGEN LIGHTING is still your best option. We have both low voltage and line voltage halogen lighting fixtures to choose from. The low voltage fixtures will require a 12 volt transformer and are much smaller in size from the line voltage options. Both of these types of lights may be controled by a LUTRON DIMMER.

Here are some low voltage fixtures:

Focus Lighting - Aluminum Bullet Light - DL22

Rab - Low Voltage Sleek Flood - LFM16

MR16 Low Voltage Bullet with Flush Shield - TEC TLOMR16F

Here are someof the line voltage fixtures:

Halogen Quartz Flood Line Voltage Fixture 300watt QF300

PAR38 Aluminum Bullet with Lamp - TEC TLR38L-BZ

REMCRAFT 2061 Incandescent Line Voltage Fixture

The bullet style fixtures give a more controlled beam pattern and produce less glare from the fixture because of the shield. The flood fixtures have a more generous spread and can be unsitely if used in the wrong application.

Diagnosing a short circuit in a 12 volt outdoor low voltage power supply.

I have a 600 W (300W per side) transformer. It is approximately 1 year old. Recently my lights went out on one side of the transformer. I disconnected the wire from the transformer and checked the voltage with a meter. The meter showed 12V. So I reconnected the wire and went to the first splice just after the first light to see if there was voltage there. There was no voltage at the first splice. When I removed the light from the fixture and checked the voltage in the fixture it was 12V. Then I checked the voltage at the splice it was 12V now. When I placed the light back into the fixture the splice registered 0V. There were no other lights connected to that side except the one. So it seems like the transformer is outputting 12V but there are no amps?

Sounds like you are headed in the right direction with your testing procedures. Are the rest of the lights working when you remove the first light? If they are, replace the light in question. If they are not, you have a short in the wiring perhaps caused by a nick in the wire, a bad socket or a bad lamp. Remove all the lamps and disconnect the wire from the TRANSFORMER. Run a continuity check to see if you have an open or closed circuit. If it is closed or showing continuity, you have either a problem with the wire or a bad socket. Keep removing fixtures from the loop until it clears the short. Good luck with your LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING system!
