High pressure sodium, metal halide. mercury vapor, halogen lights that dim.

Can this product be used in a typical residential application where it will be mounted on a soffit under the roof line? Can HPS bulbs be dimmed? Thank you for your help.

Yes this light can be used for residential applications. If you are looking to use a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL you need to consider a HALOGEN LIGHT SOURCE and not a HPS (high pressure sodium) product. All of the high intensity discharge fixtures such as MERCURY VAPOR, METAL HALIDE and HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM utilize a ballast to power the lamp and cannot be dimmed. It is possible using expensive components, but not something that you should be worried about.

Converting fluorescent fixtures to incandescent lamps.

I accidentally bought four wall sconces that have flourescent snap-in bulbs. Can I convert the sconces to incandescent lighting?

The fixtures you purchased were designed and tested for that wattage. Changing lamp type is possible, but you will void the warranty and perhaps create a fire hazard. I would pay the restocking fee and exchange the fixtures.

Using lower wattage lamps in my outdoor floodlight.

I have a an exterior flood that uses a RAB QF 200 bulb. Will a 150 bulb also fit? Thanks

Yes, you can use a lower wattage lamp in your RAB fixture as long as you do not exceed the maximum wattage of the fixture as defined on the UL sticker.

Selecting outdoor low voltage wire for a Malibu lighting system.

I am using a Malibu 600 watt system with 20 lights (20 watts each or 400 max). Do I need to consider the length of the 12 gauge wire as well since I have added length? I have about 200 feet. Also, am I supposed to use both ABC terminals? I am only using one ABC terminal.

The wire is a very critical part of your LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING system. For a distance of 200 feet, you might want to take a look at our POWER CABLE CALCULATOR for the proper run lengths. THe malibu transformer has two 25-amp circuits to handle the 50-amp load. (600/12 = 50 amps) Refer to your instructions for more specific information.

Calculating lighting loads to determine amperage and maximum loads.

How many 65watt recessed lights can safely be put on one switch?

Regular WALL SWITCHES are rated for 15 or 20 amps of load. Most houses have the 15 amp variety, so let''s do the math using that assumption. If you divide 65 watts by 120 volts you get .54 amps per light. So on a 15 amp switch you could have 27 lamps for a total of 14.63 amps. 65 multiplied by 27 equals 1,755 total watts. If you plan to install a DIMMER CONTROL you will have to split up the load into several switches or do not exceed 800 watts per switch leg.

Recessed lights that work well in a salt air environments at a beach house.

I''m building a new home and need exterior recessed lighting cans that can withstand the HARSH SALT waterfront environment. Please advise.

Mounting RECESSED LIGHTING in a salt air environment limits your selection of fixtures. I would recommend that you consider using a REMODEL HOUSING and SHOWER TRIM that has a lens and a gasket to prevent deterioration of the fixture. When the fixture does fail you can easily remove the housing and install a new one. Hope that helps!

Halogen lights, rope lighting, kitchen undercabinet lights, cove lighting & task lighting

I purchased Hampton Bay UC 120VAC (no transformer required) halogen lights to mount both under and on top of my kitchen cabinets. Only after tearing the packaging apart did I read that they are to be mounted under the cabinet only and not for top mounting. Nowhere does it say why but heat seems to be the likely culprit. Is there another reason for this? If it is the heat, I have nearly a foot of clearance between the cabinets and ceiling so would this be enough clearance? Thanks!

The most likely reason for not allowing upward lighting is the glass may overheat and break. ROPE LIGHT is a must safer and easier solution to creating indirect lighting on top of your cabinets. Just like the HALOGEN LIGHTS that you bought, ROPE LIGHT does not require a transformer. And did you know that you can use a DIMMER CONTROL to set the intensity and the mood in your kitchen?

Rope lighting is perfect for illuminating outdoor steps and railings.

We are in the process of having a stamped concrete patio poured with a 2.5 foot brick wall constructed around it (traditional courtyard). I would like to have our contractor install some sort of accent lighting beneath the overhang of the stone cap atop the brick wall (there will be a 1-2 inch overhang - perfect for some sort of cove or strip light. I am leaning towards a low voltage light strip that uses Xenon Festoon lamps. The problem is that I can't seem to find any that are designed of outdoor use. What do you recommend I use?

For the money, ROPE LIGHTS are the best choice for OUTDOOR STRIP LIGHTING under steps, decks or railings. Most of the strips lights we sell are not really designed for wet locations or outdoor use except the rope lights.. The 24-VOLT ROPE LIGHT can be installed up to 32 feet per power feed. The 12-VOLT ROPE LIGHT can be run up to 150 feet per run. Either way, I like the pearl white finish to minimize hot spots.

Leviton 3-way switch used on ceiling fans and lighting loads.

Leviton - Decora 3-way Rocker Switches 5603-2?I used this switch for a 4amp whole house fan and the motor burned up. Can this switch be used for that application or should I have used a different switch? When I first turned it on it groaned a little then it got up too speed but I could smell the motor. By the time I shut it off it was too late.

Sounds like you had your wires crossed and burned up the fan. Sorry this happened to you! This LEVITON SWITCH is more than adequate to operate your fan or lights. It is rated at 15-amps.

Switch used for table lamps that has multiple settings.

I would like to know what type of light switch to buy? I would like to know if there is a switch that has four positions. 1. Off, 2. turn on one light, 3. turn on second light, 4. and last turn on both lights. And lastly I would like to know if I can get one as 3-way.

This type of switch is commonly used in TABLE LAMPS with multiple light bulbs. They are typically a turn or push switch. We don not currently offer this type of replacement switch.

Metal halide lights used to illuminate flags at veteran''s memorial.

To whom it may concern, I am currently working on a Veteran''s Monument that will have 8 flags illuminated throughout the night. I am going to use the RAB VR300F Floodlights for the design with 150 Watt PAR38 lamps. I would also like to use the 12 gauge/2 connector Direct Burial Cable for the job. Do you recommend running that cable through conduit? If so, what size? I''d also like to see what you recommend for a power supply/transformer for the project. Should I run 8 separate lines off of a transformer, or should I run them in series? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you for any help you can give me. Sincerely,Michael

First of all, I commend your service to our country! Let's do this project right!

You do not want to use PAR38 lamps due to short lamp life of maybe 3000 hours. Do the math: 12 X 365 = 4,380 hours! This is not a good choice of fixtures or lamps.

I would go with our Large 175W Metal Halide Lighting Fixture with Single Up light Kit - TEC R4AG24147 with the spot lamp and hub mount option. Your flags will glow in the night air like you have never seen before. You should two per flag if you want them awesome looking or one per pole for very attractive lighting. The lamp life on these fixtures is 24,000 hours!

Since this is a public facility, you should run the wires in conduit or you could use 12/2 UF cable that should be buried 18" deep to comply with the National electrical code. Use some landscaping around the fixtures to conceal them from view.

I salute your efforts!

Low voltage lighting wiring techniques and sizing direct burial cables.

I have a 900 watt power pack, consisting of (3)three 300 watt hook-ups. My question is how many lineal feet can I run using 20 watt spot lights before I run out of juice? I have 4 acres and I really don''t feel like trenching for another GFCI if I can get by using 8/2 direct burial cable. Some of my lengths are probably going to be 300 lf or more. Please provide me with some formulas for how many lf I can go with 8/2 gauge and 10/2 gauge. According to your price list, it appeared that your 8 gauge and 10 gauge were about the same price, so I guess it would make sense to go for the 8 gauge.

That''s a big parcel of land for a low voltage lighting system. You are better off using multiple transformers to maintain voltage. By creating zones, you can be assured of maintaining an average voltage to each of your lights I would go with the 8/2 CABLE for sure!

To assist our customers, we created a POWER CABLE CALCULATOR that will help you figure out the size and capacity of the wire using different size loads.

We also have a DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS article that you will find useful.

Photocells are effected by stray light sources causing them to cycle on and off.

If a fixture uses flood light bulbs and has a photo eye to turn it on and off, can it use regular light bulbs?

Yes! However, make sure that the light bulb you use does not cause the photocell to cycle on and off from stray light. A reflector flood lamp, forces the light in one direction unlike a standard light bulb that throws light in every direction. If the sensor picks up too much light it will think it is daylight and turn off! You can always redirect the photocell away from the light source to prevent this form of cycling.

Dimming outdoor string lights on a patio is pefect for parties.

Can outdoor mini-lights (i.e. patio umbrella lights) be controlled with a dimmer switch? Thanks for the help

If your lights are 120-volt you can most certainly dim them with a standard DIMMER CONTROL. You will need to install the dimmer in front of the receptacle or construct a little junction box to splice the wires. Either way, you should have the lights on a GFCI receptacle just for safety reasons. FYI - to operate properly, the GFCI should be in line before the dimmer control to prevent nuisance tripping.

Battery powered deck lights for a patio umbrella look great at night.

I bought patio umbrella and want to know if there is such a thing as a battery powered electrical outlet so I can plug in some lights without having to run an extension cord from the umbrella to my outside socket. please advise. thanks.

We have some BATTERY POWERED TWINKLE LIGHTS that may be of interest to you. If your table happens to be on a wood deck with space below, you could always run a low voltage cable under the deck to the base of the umbrella stand and connect to some LOW VOLTAGE ROPE LIGHTING. You will need a TRANSFORMER if you go this route.

Tennis court lighting equipment for club sized court and stadium courts

We have a CLUB SINGLE TENNIS COURT at our weekend home. My wife has been after me to install some lighting fixtures so that we can host a neighborhood tournament. How complicated is it to install a TENNIS COURT LIGHTING SYSTEM?

Installing a tennis court yourself can be quite an enjoyable process as long as you have a lot of friends or hire someone to install them for you. Before ordering the equipment, consult the local building authorities to verify that you can install the lights! Once you have their blessing you are ready to go.

Here are some of the steps in the process to installing tennis court lights:

Electrical Wiring
Dig a narrow trench 18" deep and install 3/4" PVC conduit running from the power supply (breaker panel) to each of the light poles. It's OK to loop two poles together for this size court. Although we sell muti-tap ballasts in our lighting fixtures, it is most economical to run 240 volt power for residential applications instead of 120 volt. You should have a local electrician help you size the wire and make the necessary connections to the panel.

Concrete Footings
Second, you will need to drill four 18-24" diameter holes roughly 6-8' deep depending on your soil conditions. The CONCRETE FOOTINGS should contain rebar steel for strength and be poured with the supplied anchor bolts positioned correctly.

Pole Assembly
Using saw horses to support the poles the next step is to assemble the fixtures to the arms and finally attach them to the pole. All of the electrical wiring should be completed from the fixtures to the base of the pole during assembly.

Set Finished Poles
Using a bucket truck or small crane the poles are hoisted into the air and placed on the anchor bolts and secured into position. Using the bucket truck or a tall ladder you will need to adjust the lights after dark to minimize glare and fine tune the lights.

We also carry lighting packages for:

STADIUM & FEATURE SINGLE COURT
RECREATIONAL & RESIDENTIAL SINGLE COURT
DUAL COURT PACKAGES

If you are looking for REPLACEMENT PARTS & ACCESSORIES or a COMPLETE TENNIS COURT LIGHTING PACKAGE we have just what you need to play like the pros. Give a call today toll free at 800-239-2939 to find a lighting system that is right for you!

UL 2388 (Flexible Lighting Products) has replaced the old UL 1571 guidelines for rope light.

The reason ROPE LIGHTS are hard to find by the roll is a change in the rules from Underwriters Laboratory. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) published a new set of standards for rope light products in the fall of 2002. The new standard is known as UL 2388-Flexible Lighting Products. All manufacturers had until November of 2003 to manufacture rope light to the old UL 1571 guidelines. Any rope light manufactured after this deadline must meet or exceed all of the new, more stringent standards of UL 2388. Here is a short explanation of the changes required by UL 2388.

No Field Cutting
The cutting and splicing of rope light at the site of installation is NO longer permitted. All rope light must be pre-cut at the factory and have molded ends that can be easily connected. Installers will now only be able to connect and disconnect molded ends of pre-cut lengths.

120V Product Only
Nothing is really said with regard to low voltage rope light in the new UL 2388 standards. Therefore, for the foreseeable future Residential Landscape Lighting & Design will only offer 120-volt rope light. We anticipate, however, that UL 2388 will be amended some time in 2005 and address many important issues regarding the manufacturing and use of low voltage rope light.

SJT Power Cords with Fused Plugs
UL 2388 requires that an SJT (heavy duty) power cord with a fused plug be used on all rope light that is designed for outdoor use but does NOT require a fused plug for indoor use. Rope light that has an SJT power cord with a fused plug can, therefore, be used indoors as well as outdoors.

Stronger PVC and Less Heat Output
The new UL 2388 has much more stringent testing standards for the clear PVC plastic used in making rope light. The result is that the rope light manufactured under these new standards emits much less heat than rope light made under the former standard.

Mounting System Design According to UL 2388 any mounting system design must allow the end-user to be able to remove the rope light without using a tool. That means no staples or Romex connectors to attach the rope light!

We were fortunate to purchase a large inventory of ROPE LIGHT MANUFACTURED BEFORE NOVEMBER 2003 BY THE ROLL. If you are interested in purchasing bulk reels of rope light, contact Residential Landscape Lighting & Design for more information toll free at 800-239-2939.

Hampton Bay transformer has quit working and I don''t know why.

I have two Hampton Bay SKLXR032 12 volt transformer. One is hooked to my light in the from yard. There is 30 feet of wire leading from the transformer to the lights. The lights consist of 12ea 4 watt light on a 60 foot wire. They work fine. My backyard light have 50 feet of 12 gauge wire leading from the transformer to the lights. I have 8ea 4 watt lights on 60 feet of 14 gauge wire. The total length of wire being 110 feet. In this configuration the lights will not light and the transformer will not turn on and produce 12 volts. Please advise on what I can do. I have put a 12 volt battery at the end of the 50 foot wire and the lights work fine. I have also replaced the 50 wire with a different wire. Still no luck. Please advise. Why won''t the transformer put out any voltage? Please advise.

I recommend that you replace the Hampton Bay transformer with a more reliable model. Our MALIBU TRANSFORMERS ML88T are heavy duty magnetic transformers with secondary circuit protection. I get more complaints about Hampton Bay transformers than any other transformer on the market.

Dimmer control is buzzing and I don''t know what to

I HAVE 3 X 35W LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTS ON A DIMMER SWITCH. THE DIMMER SWITCH IS RATED AT 400W HOWEVER THERE IS A LOUD HUM WHEN YOU DIM THE LIGHTS. SHOULD I FIT A LOWER RATED DIMMER OR SHOULD I ADD ADDITIONAL LIGHTS?

Are you using a magnetic or electronic transformer on your lighting system?

If you have the wrong style DIMMER CONTROL for your transformer this may be the problem. Use a ELECTRONIC DIMMER CONTROL for electronic transformers. Likewise, if you have magnetic transformer you need a MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL.

Hampton Bay transformers compared to Techlight and Focus transformers.

I have a Hampton Bay 300 watt transformer for outdoor lighting. The photocell has been damaged and no longer works. How can I obtain a replacement?

You need to contact Home Depot directly for replacement parts for your Hampton Bay transformer. That is the most common complaint I hear from my outdoor landscape lighting customers. For that reason, we promote TECH LIGHT STAINLESS STEEL TRANSFORMERS and FOCUS HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS to our customers. We feel they are a more dependable and reliable product!

Step lights for my new deck would really be nice.

I am installing step lights on my deck and around it, is there an optimum height for the step light or is the middle of the riser the correct location?

The middle of each step is a good starting point. With STEP LIGHTING, you are really interested in preventing shadows which complicate the situation. If you can mount them on the side of the steps approximately 12" up it is always better for distribution and safety reasons.

Smoke detectors have gotten much better over the years.

Our condo is approx 30 years old and we need to replace some of the fire sensors. Can we find exact replacements?

You would not want to use the same devices due to improvements in technology and appearance. The SMOKE DETECTORS we have today are combination devices that monitor not only smoke but carbon dioxide as well. We also have standard FIRE DETECTORS if you want a simple device.

What is the best outdoor landscape lighting MR16 fixture to up light my tree?

I''m buying floodlights to up light a large walnut on one edge of patio. Total space is small (1200 sq ft) and I don''t want to overdo it. If I use two small 12v floods what bulb size should I use, 10w, 20w, or 35w. I have the same question about spotlighting a small fountain about 30 inches high. Thanks.

I would go with the 35 or 50 watt MR16 lamp. In a 50 watt lamp you can go with a 10 degree beam spread (EXT) 38 degree beam spread (EXN) or a 55 degree beam spread (FNV) depending on the area of coverage. For the fountain, I would use a 20 watt MR16 (EZX) 7 degree spot. Hope this helps in your selection of MR16 lamps. We have some great MR16 FIXTURES if you are looking for some for your outdoor landscape lighting project.
