Low voltage lighting layouts, designing low voltage circuits and 12 volt wiring information.

Do you have a product that can combine 2 low voltage circuit into one such that I can use a single circuit transformer? I understand the capacity of the transformer has to be big enough for the combined load. Thanks.

All of our TRANSFORMERS have a 25-amp circuit breaker per circuit. You can combine several feeds under one lug as long as you don''t exceed 300 watts. (300 watts divided by 12 volts equals 25 amps) Check out our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEMS information page. I would recommend that you have at least 12/2 LANDSCAPE CABLE on each of your lighting runs.

Battery operated lights for pictures, art, pianos and christmas decorations.

I am having a tough time locating miniature ( 3" - 6") electrical or battery operated up-lights that one can sit on a counter top or the floor. Do you carry such a product or have a connection with a company that does? Thanks.

We only have a limited selection of BATTERY OPERATED LIGHTS. We have TWINKLE LIGHTS, PICTURE LIGHTS and PIANO LIGHTS that operate on batteries.

Low voltage lights mounted next to sprinkler heads spell trouble.

Are there special design concerns when a lighting system is immediately adjacent to an underground sprinkler head/system?

It is always best when designing a outdoor lighting system to avoid mounting lights adjacent to sprinkler heads for obvious reasons. UP LIGHTS, which always have lenses, will accumulate lime on the lens from the water restricting the light output. Less expensive PATH LIGHTS generally don''t have lenses or sprinkler guards and water constantly spraying the light bulb can cause it to crack or fail. SOCKETS over the long run begin to deteriorate from the constant moisture. So, if at all possible, avoid mounting a light near sprinkler heads.

Recessed lights for a kitchen and breakfast room.

I am replacing flouresent lighting in my kitchen with recessed lighting. I realize that I should install the lights 6 to 7 feet apart. Does it matter the size of the fixture, 4", 5" or 6"? Or, is it just the bulb I use that I need to consider? My wife wants to go with a smaller 4 or 5 " size for looks. I was going to put in 6".

The size of the recessed lighting fixture will determine the maximum wattage lamp you can use. For example, a 4" fixture with a PAR20 halogen lamp has a maximum wattage of 50-watts. A 5" fixture with a BR30 incandescent lamp has a maximum wattage of 85-watts. A 6" fixture with a PAR38 halogen lamp has a maximum wattage of 120-watts. For the size kitchen you have ddescribed, I would go with a 5" LIGHTOLIER RECESSED DOWN LIGHT or a 5" HALO RECESSED LIGHT.

You should also install a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL on the lights to regulate the intensity and to set the mood!

Photocell controls for outdoor lighting systems turn on at dusk and off at dawn.

I have outdoor lighting - black box with only name on it as TWILIGHT LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM Model: CB-150MD Trying to locate just the photo sensor - do not need the entire unit. Works fine as ON all the time, it''s the dusk-to-dawn that won''t operate, and I believe the photo sensor is bad. Can you help me find a suitable sensor to go with this unit ?

I am sorry, but we do not carry what you are looking for. We do have PHOTOCELLS that you can use to control the (120-Volt) line side of your transformer.

Rope light can be bent or shaped to go around corners in a cove.

Would like to have indirect lighting hid behind crown molding in our hallway. Will bending ropelightingat a 90 degree angle either inward or outward break the electrical connections within the rope.

As long as it is a slow radius turn the LIGHT ROPE should be fine going around the corner of your cove. I prefer the pearl white color option for cove lighting applications. Check out our COVE LIGHTING INFORMATION page for additional ideas, suggestions and indirect cove lighting products.

Solar powered deck and step lights compared to traditional low voltage step lights.

where do i find solar powered lighting for deck stairs that mounts flush to the stair riser?

I am not aware of a fluch mount solar light designed specifically for stair risers. By design, the solar powered lights must have solar panels pointed at the sun to collect energy and recharge. A step light would require a remote panel to be oporational.

Have you looked at our LOW VOLTAGE STEP LIGHTS that are designed for steps, decks, stairways and other patio applications? They are very easy to install and service and will be more reliable than the solar option over the long haul.

Pipe threads for landscape lighting are NPS as compared to NPT threads for pressurized applications.

What is the difference between n.p.s. threads and n.p.t. ? Are there adapters to change from 1/2 inch male nps to 1/2 inch female npt. Help !!!! I''m trying to retrofit fixtures for a driveway project. Thanks in advance.

NPS threads are straight pipe threads that when assembled with other NPS threaded components will provide free and loose mechanical joints without pressure tightness. NPT threads are tapered pipe threads that when assembles with other NPT components and a sealer will produce a pressure tight joint.

Most of the LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FIXTURES we sell have NPS threads. You can use a standard pipe thread compound on NPS threads to prevent water from getting into the fixtures or junction boxes.

Low voltage lighting, outdoor ceiling fans, accent lights, hanging lights & barbeque lighting

We''ve got a 35'' X 16'' Aluma-wood patio cover. It''s an aluminum patio cover with a laticed, non solid top. I would like to put 4 cannister or puck lights directly over the BBQ island and 3 surface mount ceiling lights spread across the 35'' length. BBQ lights will be on one dimmer switch and ceiling lights on another.First, I''d like the lamps to be bright, maybe brighter than incandescent bulbs. I''d also like the dimmers for mood when necessary. Halogen or xelogen bulbs are the way to go, right? Can dimmers be used with halogen or xelogen bulbs like incandescent bulbs?Second, lights that take incandescent bulbs cannot also take halogen/xelogen bulbs, correct? If so, where does one find decorative/stylish, "outdoors use" halogen/halogen lights? I've looked everywhere and am coming up short. Would I be better sticking with incandescent bulbs?

Sounds like a great project! I can tell you now, forget using PUCK LIGHTS outside. They are not weatherproof and will look terrible. I do prefer the halogen source over the incandescent source due to lamp life and color.

You have a couple of options for LOW VOLTAGE HANGING LIGHTS in copper, HANGING ACCENT LIGHTS in brass or DIRECTIONAL ACCENT LIGHTS that will look good on your arbor.

How about a WEATHERPROOF CEILING FAN? We have a full line of WESTINGHOUSE FANS so of which are designed for wet locations.

Path lights create wonderful pools of light for walkways, sidewalks, driveways and patios.

I need new path light. The 10" Pagoda Path Lights AL0310 seem appropriate. But I am confused. Is the light spread a circle with 24 foot diameter? Is that achieved with the lamp that comes with the fixture? Do different lam;ps produce different light spreads?

The Focus Lighting - 10" Pagoda Path Lights AL0310 path light is perfect for illuminating walks, paths and driveways. The diameter of the circle is determined by the mounting height. The light bulb determines intensity, not so much the spread! I like the 20-watt SC base holgen lamp myself. If you want to spread more than a 10'' diameter, you need to go with a taller stem. Be careful not to go to high as you begin to get glare from the fixture. They are designed to be installed below eye level for maximum enjoyment.

You might also consider the Techlight 10" Mushroom Path Light 12 Volt AL10A as another option.

Vent fan and exhaust fan sizing information for Panasonic and Nutone heaters, ventilators and fans

Is there an easy way to size an exhaust fan for my bathroom? You have so many choices!

Picking the right VENT FAN is always hard for a consumer. We get lot's of questions regarding NUTONE FANS and PANASONIC FANS.

So we created a simple CALCULATOR to help you determine the minimum CFM fan needed for HVI's recommended 8 air exchanges perhour as recommended by the manufacturer. CFM stands for cubic feet per minute of air.

If you need further assistance to select the right product for your home, just give us a call at 800-239-2939.

Outdoor lighting poles, concrete footings, outdoor security lighting, security lights & commercial light poles for parking lots

Do you have a typical light standard detail for a 30 foot pole(I am looking for the detail of what needs to be put in as far as concrete and rebar to support this pole)Thanks

The standard CONCRETE FOOTING for a 30'' pole is 24" diameter approximately 6-8'' deep. Of course, soil conditions vary from state to state, so it''s a good idea to have a local engineer review the WIND ZONE CHART and sign off on the final footing design.

For more information concerning OUTDOOR LIGHTING POLES you should take a look at our OUTDOOR POLE LIGHTING INFORMATION PAGE.

Westinghouse fans are designed for outdoor pergolas and patios

I noticed in a previous post that you carried Westinghouse Weatherproof fans. Would these be suitable for use in an exposed pergola?

Yes, some of our WESTINGHOUSE CEILING FANS are for wet locations and others are for indoor use only. I recommend that you take a look at the folowing fan:

Westinghouse - Pacific Paradise Ceiling Fans - 78790
Item Number: WST 78790

I see a lot of contractors install a peice of plexiglass on top of the pergola to protect the fan from direct expose. These fans have gaskets and are designed to work outdoors.

Mercury vapor bullet down lights are used to create moonlighting in Oak trees.

Currently designing landscaping for our new custom home, so please send information on lighting and design services. Of particular interest is down lighting for large oak trees on our property. Thank you.

If you are interested in down lighting, I would suggest that you look at our MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHT KITS. These packages are designed for the "Do It Yourselfer" in mind! They include all the necessay items you need to perform a professional installation. The DOUBLE 100 WATT KIT is probably the most common wattage for Oak trees. If the tree is very tall, you should upgrade to the 175 WATT KIT.

If you have any questions, just give us a call at 800-239-2939.

Sub woofers and outdoor landscape lighting is all I need to finish off my project!

Just stumbled upon your web site -- very helpful, and I''m likely to become a good customer! My questions: I''m installing a pool in my back yard. I already have Niles Outdoor Rock Speakers (4 pair) that I''m placing around the pool/spa/patios. If I want to add a subwoofer for better bass response, do I just need one for the area as a whole, or should I have multiple subwoofers? The overall "pool/deck area" is probably something like 60'' by 60'' or thereabouts. Second question. I want to install a "moon light" in a tree near the pool for some ambient down lighting. What light do you recommend for that application? I assume it''s 120V, rather than low voltage, but if I''m mistaken, let me know. Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the kind words. I certainly hope that we can assist you with your audio and lighting needs!

I would recommend that you go with two SUB WOOFERS for that size yard. Since you already have eight speakers this should do the trick. Your yard will ROCK!

As for lighting outdoor landscape lighting equipment, Watt it really depends on the height of the tree and how bright you want the light. Here are my suggestions:

If your mounting height is 20'' high or less go with a 50 WATT MERCURY DOWN LIGHT VAPOR KIT.

If your mounting height is 30'' or less go with a 100 WATT MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHT KIT.

If your mounting height is 40''or over go with a 175 WATT MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHT KIT.

Depending on the position of your pool you might want to go with a two fixtures in the tree. Sound like you have a great yard! Give us a call at 800-239-2939 for more assistance in selecting your products.

How do I install a timer on a 12 volt transformer?

Apparently terminal C is used for a 3 wire photo cell to control the lights. How is this done?We have an 88, 100 and 200 watt transformers with a timer each. I want the system to turn on at dusk and turn off at 11:00, without having to adjust for daylight changes through the seasons. This would involve putting a photoelectric sensor in the line after the power transformer or using terminal C. The transformer timer would turn power on at say 4:00 p.m. but the lights would not until it got dark. They would then turn off at 11:00 from the timer. Is there a sensor which is available that works on a 12 volt system? I have tried one of your 120 volt ones - but the 12 volts is not enough "juice" to trigger the sensor to turn off. Or is this what the C terminal is for? ThxRuss.

You are making this way to complicated! Just install a MECHANICAL TIME CLOCK to control the TRANSFORMER. If you want, you can install a PHOTOCELL after the time clock and before the transformer. I do not know of a 12 volt photocell or time clock.

Picture lights come in both traditional and contemporary styles.

I have looked at your different picture lights and see that the 14" Richardson picture light has an option of a switchon the frame. I am going to need 3 or 4 of these and would like to buy the picture lights that have the switches already on the light frame, if possible. Can you give me your expert opinion on which is the best quality for the most reasonable price? Thank-you.

All of our HOUSE OF TROY PICTURE LIGHTS have a thumb switch on the cord. What I do is staple the thumb switch to the frame, using a T18 staple gun, and them staple the excess wire. If you have a RECESSED CLOCK RECEPTACLE behind the painting this works well because the painting hangs flat against the wall. Personally, I like the TRADITIONAL PICTURE LIGHTS because of the variety of sizes and finishes or the CONTEMPORARY PICTURE LIGHTS.

Recessed Lights, Shelf Lighting, Puck Light, Cabinet Lighting & Lighting Glass Shelf

I am in the process of building some wood bookshelves for a client in his home office. He has asked me to put some lights on the shelves. I see that you have a wide selection of shelf lighting products to choose from, which is very helpful. How do I light each shelf with the same amount of light if I use glass or wood shelving?

We do have a great selection of CABINET LIGHTS and SHELF LIGHTING PRODUCTS. If you are planning to use glass shelves you have two mounting options: From the top of the cabinet down, or mounted vertically on both sides of each opening.

TOP DOWN METHOD OF SHELF LIGHTING
Depending on the size of the cabinet and space above the cabinet you may want to use PUCK LIGHTS or LOW VOLTAGE RECESSED LIGHTS as your light source. The puck light fixtures are best suited for small to medium sized cabinets with glass shelving. The low voltage recessed lights are better for medium to large cabinets where more light is desired.

VERTICAL MOUNT METHOD OF SHELF LIGHTING
For successful vertical mounting of lights it is best to provide a 2" wood reveal or stile on the cabibets to hide the lights. If the shelfs are adjustable, you should also provide a 1" space from the front of the shelf to the back of the reveal to accomodate the light fixtures and to clear the shelves.

Our PHANTOM XENON VERTICAL SHELF LIGHTS are the most effective and flexible lights that we offer. Used in conjunction with a TRANSFORMER and LOW VOLTAGE DIMMER CONTROL these lights will more than please your client! Check out our GALLERY SECTION for more ideas!

Visit PHANTOM LIGHTING.COM to learn more about ways to illuminate shelving, cabinets, breakfronts, antiques, coves, display cabinets or bookcases.

I am installing new drop ceiling tiles at my office and need some new FLUORESCENT FIXTURES to finish off the job. What is the cost and availability for 2' x 2' fixtures and 2' x 4' parabolic fixtures?

    Each bulb is 32Watts
    9 louver cells
    3" deep louvers

Access plate provides top access to wire way
    UL/CUL listed
All metal parts painted after fabrication following treatment with phosphate rust inhibitor

Low voltage transformer stopped working after a rain storm.

We have low voltage outdoor landscape lighting for about 4 mo. now. Worked fine until some heavy rains came, not the first mind you and suddenly no lights. Tripper not turning lights on, manual either. Checked circuit breaker, socket is covered and dry, replugged and still no lights. Could water have short circuited where water may have entered through the piercing of the quick connect? Please help

I suppose that could happen, but is is highly unlikely that all the fixtures would fail at the same time. Sounds like your transformer to me.

I would disconnect on of the fixtures and connect it directly to the TRANSFORMER as a test. If the fixture lights up, then the problem is in the wiring or the connectors. If nothing happens, you will need to replace the power supply.

My outdoor lighting timer has stopped working!

My timer will work shutting lights off but not turning on. The lights will come on if I manually turn the timer''s dial. Once I do this then the timer works. It will shut lights off at corredt time. When it goes back to time to turn lights on it does not move. I have to move manually.

You might need a new set of TIMECLOCK TRIPPERS to solve your problem. We also have replacement TIMECLOCKS if you decide to purchase a new one. We have both INTERMATIC TIMERS and TORK TIMECLOCKS.

Hanging lights that I can use on my patio.

You might take a look at out FOCUS HANGING LIGHTS for your patio cover. Since they are low voltage lights they are easy to install, attractive and very effective. You will need a TRANSFORMER to power the lights and a LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL to adjust the intensity.

Transformer wiring instructions for 120 volt input to 12 volt output.

I want to make sure that I hook up the GE transformer I bought properly. It is a 1000watt with 4 primary wires and 4 secondary wires. If I am reading the wiring diagram correctly, to go from 120 volts to 12 I need to hook two of the primary''s and two of the secondary''s together. So do I have to be concerned about which primary wire gets hooked to the hot wire? Also, the way the lights were hooked up before we bought the house was there were four 250 watt transformers hooked to 4 low voltage wires. Will it create any problem to hook these 4 sets of wires together to attatch to the new transformer?

On your GE Buck/Boost Transformer should have several wires labeled H1, H2, H3, H4 on the primary side and X1, X2, X3, X4 on the secondary side.

For 120 volt input and 12 volt output connect the following wires:

    H1 to H3

    H2 to H4

    X1 to X3

    X2 to X4

Malibu low voltage path light spacing suggestions and advice.

I have read your site to help design my landscape lighting which is very helpful, however I could not find what the normal distance of path lights with 11 watt lamps on walkway? Also, is a 20 watt spot OK to use to accent the house? Thank you!

The distance between PATH LIGHTS really depends on the height and style of the fixture. Sounds like you are using a MALIBU lighting fixture with 11 watt lamps. Those low voltage lights should be spaced approximately 6 to 8 feet apart. If you had a taller fixture with a higher wattage lamp like the Tech light - Low Voltage Copper Path Light TLSCPL12 you could go 8 to 12 feet apart.

The 20 watt MR16 is a good lamp for washing the front of your house.

Mechanical timer for my outdoor lighting has stopped working.

Timer runs until red pin reaches the switch, then it will not move any further and lights will not switch on. Unit seems to get stuck. Why?

Sounds like the small gear is spinning on the shaft of your time clock when the tripper hits the on lever. I would recommend that you replace the motor or install a new TIME CLOCK SWITCH CONTROL.

Another inexpensive solution to your problem is to install a PHOTOCELL CONTROL for your outdoor lighting system.
