I am starting to think about Christmas lighting for my home. I am changing things up this year and need some advice on string lights. How do you safely remove lights from a string when you outline the roof and need to hide some of the lights?
You have two options. One is to cut and splice the wire or you can simple use our
BLACK OUT CHRISTMAS CAPS to remove lamps and cover up the sockets. We have models for
C7 LIGHTS ,
C9 LIGHTS and
MINIATURE STRING LIGHTS.

I was wondering if it is problematic to change wire size in runs. For example, tapping into a run of 10g wire with some 16g to supply a single 20 watt light. Shouldn't this be safe/effective as long as the load on the 16g wire is reasonable for that wire (i.e. the 20w light)? Thanks
You can certainly use different size wires to feed your
OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING SYSTEM as long as you are aware of the amperage capacities of each wire. You should start with the largest wire leaving the
TRANSFORMER branching out to the smaller wires going to lights. 10/2 is good for 30 amps. 12/2 is good for 20-amps. 14/2 is good for 15-amps. 16/2 is good for 10-amps. See our
VOLTAGE CHART for wiring diagrams and information.

I would like to put a dimmer control on my table lamps. Is that possible without rewiring the fixture or changing the socket?
The easiest way to control you table lamps is by using a
LUTRON LAMP CORD DIMMER. You just cut the wire and install the dimmer switch
in line between the power supply and the lamp. They come in several colors such a white, black and brown. We also have a
PLUG IN DIMMER CONTROL if you prefer to not cut the wire to dim the lights. This is great for lamps by the bed and guest bedrooms.

What is the deal with putting several dimmers in one box? Why do they get so hot and what can I do to fix the problem?
LUTRON DIMMER CONTROLS must be
DERATED WHEN GANGED to accomodate the combined heat load.
LUTRON ELECTRONICS does a good job of explaining the use of multiple dimmers behind one switch plate.
It is very important that you understand how to properly gang dimmers and the consequences of a poor installation. All
DIMMER CONTROLS get hot and they dissipate the heat by using the aluminum heat sink on the front of the dimmer. When you gang them you have to remove a portion of the aluminum heat sink which causes the temperature to rise and is multiplied by each dimmer you install. You can rearrange the dimmers in the box by
separating them with switches in a
multi gang box or relocate the dimmer to the other end of a three way system.

I am looking for a replacement mercury vapor ballast for one my landscape lighting fixtures. Do you sell just the ballast or do you have to buy the capacitor as well?
The
ADVANCE MERCURY VAPOR BALLASTS and
METAL HALIDE BALLASTS we sell are packaged as a kit. If you have an older model ballast, it is a good idea to replace the capacitor at the same time. Some of the older capacitors contained
PCB's and should be carefully disposed of.
If you are interested, we also have
HID BALLASTS MOUNTED IN NEMA 3 BOXES that are designed specifically for
OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING.

I am in the process of designing a fountain for my yard. Do you have any information that might be helpful in this process?
Designing proper lighting for a
GARDEN POND or OUTDOOR FOUNTAIN is fairly simple if you
understand what kind and how many lights to use. The FOCUS
SL40 UNDERWATER LIGHT is one of our most
populate models. Another popular garden fountain light is the FOCUS
SL11 BRASS POND LIGHT. For both models you will need to use a
GFCI RECEPTACLE and a
LOW VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER.

I have several raised planters with Sago Palms that I would like to light. I am looking for a very small halogen light that does not look bad during the day.
Our smallest
HALOGEN ACCENT LIGHT is the MR8 copper series of lights from Focus Industries. These little lites are only 1.5" in diameter and utilize a
MR8 20-watt halogen lamp. Of course, all low voltage lighting requires a
TRANSFORMER to power the lights.

On the RAB R90M how can it use a PAR38 bulb if the housing is 2 1/2" in diameter? That does not compute!
That is simple. The
RAB R90M is a basic medium base socket holder with a rubber seal to keep things dry. Only the base of the lamp screws into the holder and the reflector portion of the lamp remains exposed. You can use a PAR20, PAR30 or a PAR38 light bulb. If you are looking for something more
attractive, you might consider our
REMCRAFT BULLET FLOOD HOLDERS.

My new home (3 BR + Den, 1650
Sqft) would be ready in next 6 months. I need to freeze electric fitting options with my builder this weekend (standard fittings are very basic). My questions is that if I need to have some decor lights over few paintings over the wall, then what all electric points do I need to add to my options ? and do I need to add one point for each
painting ? Also, let me know if there is anything important with electric fittings and points, which I should consider now when home construction is in design phase.
You should have one or more
LOW VOLTAGE ACCENT LIGHTS to illuminate each piece of art. One if the art is small to medium size, and two mounted at oblique angles if the painting is large. The Halo H1499T/1420P is my favorite. This light will
rewire a
MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL. The lights should be mounted at roughly a 45 degree angle to the art.

First, I would like to compliment you for providing so much free advice! Second, here's my question. I want to light a single tree - Bradford pear, about 20 feet tall today - that's in a circle in the center of our driveway. The total run of wire is about 80 feet (that's the actual, not straight line, distance). If I get 1 50 watt up light - well or spot? - what size transformer is appropriate? It would be great to think I can have extra capacity, but I also read you're supposed to use at least 60% of the transformer's capacity, so if I use a 50 watt bulb, I would only need an 80 watt (if there is such a thing) transformer, but then I have only a little extra capacity. I will be using 12/2 wire, so not too much voltage drop in 80 feet. In your own lighting kit with 6 20 watt lights you're only using 40% of the capacity?? Thanks!!
Thanks for the kudo's! I have a lot of fun answering all the great questions I get from people such as yourself. Depending on the plant material around the base of the Pear Tree, I would use two 50-watt LOW VOLTAGE HALOGEN UP LIGHTS (EXN 38 degree lamps) for a balanced and dramatic display. If it is lawn, I would go with GRADE LEVEL UP LIGHTS (50PAR36/WFL lamp). As far as the TRANSFORMER, you should get the 150-watt ECONOMICAL POWER SUPPLY and use 12/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE under the driveway to feed the light. You might run two cables (one for each light) just in case one fails you can always go to one cable. Send us some digital pictures and we will add them to our OUTDOOR LIGHTING GALLERY. Enjoy!

I have installed large boxes on my deck that I put potted plants in. I would like to light these, but am not sure what to use. Could you please let me know what would work best? I also have a wall built as to hide my grill from the deck and would like to put lighting on the wall. What type of lights should I use? Thank you for your prompt response.
You can spot light your planters with a
LOW VOLTAGE ACCENT LIGHT mounted in an adjacent tree or soffit of the house. You can also put a
MUSHROOM PATH LIGHT in the planter to illuminate the plants. For the wall you could use some
LOW VOLTAGE STEP LIGHTS for safety or some
UP LIGHTS to accent the wall. You will need a
LOW VOLTAGE POWER SUPPLY and
LOW VOLTAGE CABLE to complete the job.

I bought a house that has one of these and honest to gosh can't figure out how to change the lightbulb. How do you remove the glass cover to get at the bulbs?
Changing the light bulb is quite easy on your
NUTONE QT9093WH HEAT/VENT LIGHT. The front grill cover and glass lens is held is place by two springs called "Chicken Leg" springs. You simply pull down on the outside cover avout 3" and then push the springs together with your fingers to release the grill from the housing. Good Luck!

I just purchased (22)20 watt low voltage landscape lights. I want to run these lights around my pool totaling 150'' of wire. The lights are going to be spaced evenly the entire 150''. My question is what size wire should i use, and what size transformer on this straight run with no splices? Also can I use a 600 watt transformer with (2)300 watt circuits, and just bridge the transformer for a (1) 600 watt output for this project.
You need to run multiple 12/2 LANDSCAPE CABLES to groups of lights totaling roughly 100 watts each. We have 10/2 CABLE which is good for 30 amps and longer runs. Otherwise, you will have VOLTAGE DROP PROBLEMS and dim lights on the end of the runs The transformer has two 300 watt circuits for a reason! Follow the manufacturer''s instructions do not exceed 300-watts per circuit.

I have 14 recessed lights on one lutron switch dimmer combo that is getting hot. The bulb watts is 960 but the lutron switch is rated 1000. why is it getting so hot to the touch?
During normal operation, solid-state dimmers generate heat. A solid-state dimmer is roughly 98% efficient-2% of the power is dissipates as heat, causing the dimmer to feel warm to the touch. The closer a dimmer is run to full output and the higher the load (watts) on the dimmer, the warmer it will feel. This is perfectly normal and safe.
LUTRON DIMMERS AND LIGHTING CONTROLS are designed to the strictest UL safety standard, and can handle their full rated load (a 600 Watt dimmer can handle a full 600W of power without overheating.

What is xenon lighting. How is it different from incandescent and flourescent? How much do the bulbs cost? Does it require a transformer?
XENON LIGHTING is simply a light bulb that is filled with xenon gas and has a carbon filament. The gas causes the light to operate more efficiently which translates into a longer life, brighter source.
FLUORESCENT LIGHTING requires the use of a ballast to ignite the gas which is in the tube. By design these fixture have a lamp life in excess of 24,000 hours.
HALOGEN LIGHTING produces a white light, more heat and requires a
12-VOLT TRANSFORMER to run the lights.

Why is my dimmer switch getting warm when the lights are on? The dimmer switch is rated for 600w, and my 4 recessed lights only add up to 320w. Using 14-2 wire. In another room, I have a standard light switch controlling 425 watts and it never gets warm.
If the
DIMMER CONTROL is ganged with another dimmer in the same box you reduce the 600-watt capacity down to 450-watts. If the switch box is full of wires and does not have room to disipate the heat that may be another cause. And finally, if you have the wrong dimmer or a cheap dimmer for the type of load that can also be a problem. For example, you can only use an electronic dimmer with fixtures that have an electronic transformer. Dimmers by nature do get warm, so don't worry. If it is really hot to the touch, I would contact an electrician to check it out. You might also check out our

Is it safe to use a dimmer switch with flourescent fixtures in my kitchen? We have a 4 bulb fixture. Thanks
The quick answer is NO! Unless you replace the
FLUORESCENT BALLAST with a new one that is designed to operate with a
FLUORESCENT DIMMER CONTROL you will have problems and may cause a fire. This might require rewiring the switch leg. Try installing color corrected lamps in the 3500K range which will soften the light and improve color rendering. Hope that helps!

I just bought a house with an outdoor mercury vapor light. The bulbs are a lot more than regular bulbs is there an adapter to make a regular bulb fit in the fixture or is it worth it to pay so much more for the mercury vapor bulb?
You cannot put a standard incandescent bulb in a mercury vapor fixture due to the
HID BALLAST. Mercury Vapor is an HID source that works by raising the operating voltage of the lamp to excite the gas envelope which in turn creates the light. If you bypass the ballast, by rewiring the fixture, you can install a standard lamp. Before you go to that trouble, did you check our
