I am starting to think about Christmas lighting for my home. I am changing things up this year and need some advice on string lights. How do you safely remove lights from a string when you outline the roof and need to hide some of the lights?
You have two options. One is to cut and splice the wire or you can simple use our
BLACK OUT CHRISTMAS CAPS to remove lamps and cover up the sockets. We have models for
C7 LIGHTS ,
C9 LIGHTS and
MINIATURE STRING LIGHTS.

I was wondering if it is problematic to change wire size in runs. For example, tapping into a run of 10g wire with some 16g to supply a single 20 watt light. Shouldn't this be safe/effective as long as the load on the 16g wire is reasonable for that wire (i.e. the 20w light)? Thanks
You can certainly use different size wires to feed your
OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE LIGHTING SYSTEM as long as you are aware of the amperage capacities of each wire. You should start with the largest wire leaving the
TRANSFORMER branching out to the smaller wires going to lights. 10/2 is good for 30 amps. 12/2 is good for 20-amps. 14/2 is good for 15-amps. 16/2 is good for 10-amps. See our
VOLTAGE CHART for wiring diagrams and information.

I would like to put a dimmer control on my table lamps. Is that possible without rewiring the fixture or changing the socket?
The easiest way to control you table lamps is by using a
LUTRON LAMP CORD DIMMER. You just cut the wire and install the dimmer switch
in line between the power supply and the lamp. They come in several colors such a white, black and brown. We also have a
PLUG IN DIMMER CONTROL if you prefer to not cut the wire to dim the lights. This is great for lamps by the bed and guest bedrooms.

What is the deal with putting several dimmers in one box? Why do they get so hot and what can I do to fix the problem?
LUTRON DIMMER CONTROLS must be
DERATED WHEN GANGED to accomodate the combined heat load.
LUTRON ELECTRONICS does a good job of explaining the use of multiple dimmers behind one switch plate.
It is very important that you understand how to properly gang dimmers and the consequences of a poor installation. All
DIMMER CONTROLS get hot and they dissipate the heat by using the aluminum heat sink on the front of the dimmer. When you gang them you have to remove a portion of the aluminum heat sink which causes the temperature to rise and is multiplied by each dimmer you install. You can rearrange the dimmers in the box by
separating them with switches in a
multi gang box or relocate the dimmer to the other end of a three way system.

I am looking for a replacement mercury vapor ballast for one my landscape lighting fixtures. Do you sell just the ballast or do you have to buy the capacitor as well?
The
ADVANCE MERCURY VAPOR BALLASTS and
METAL HALIDE BALLASTS we sell are packaged as a kit. If you have an older model ballast, it is a good idea to replace the capacitor at the same time. Some of the older capacitors contained
PCB's and should be carefully disposed of.
If you are interested, we also have

I have several raised planters with Sago Palms that I would like to light. I am looking for a very small halogen light that does not look bad during the day.
Our smallest
HALOGEN ACCENT LIGHT is the MR8 copper series of lights from Focus Industries. These little lites are only 1.5" in diameter and utilize a
MR8 20-watt halogen lamp. Of course, all low voltage lighting requires a
TRANSFORMER to power the lights.

On the RAB R90M how can it use a PAR38 bulb if the housing is 2 1/2" in diameter? That does not compute!
That is simple. The
RAB R90M is a basic medium base socket holder with a rubber seal to keep things dry. Only the base of the lamp screws into the holder and the reflector portion of the lamp remains exposed. You can use a PAR20, PAR30 or a PAR38 light bulb. If you are looking for something more
attractive, you might consider our

My new home (3 BR + Den, 1650
Sqft) would be ready in next 6 months. I need to freeze electric fitting options with my builder this weekend (standard fittings are very basic). My questions is that if I need to have some decor lights over few paintings over the wall, then what all electric points do I need to add to my options ? and do I need to add one point for each
painting ? Also, let me know if there is anything important with electric fittings and points, which I should consider now when home construction is in design phase.
You should have one or more
LOW VOLTAGE ACCENT LIGHTS to illuminate each piece of art. One if the art is small to medium size, and two mounted at oblique angles if the painting is large. The Halo H1499T/1420P is my favorite. This light will
rewire a
MAGNETIC DIMMER CONTROL. The lights should be mounted at roughly a 45 degree angle to the art.

First, I would like to compliment you for providing so much free advice! Second, here's my question. I want to light a single tree - Bradford pear, about 20 feet tall today - that's in a circle in the center of our driveway. The total run of wire is about 80 feet (that's the actual, not straight line, distance). If I get 1 50 watt up light - well or spot? - what size transformer is appropriate? It would be great to think I can have extra capacity, but I also read you're supposed to use at least 60% of the transformer's capacity, so if I use a 50 watt bulb, I would only need an 80 watt (if there is such a thing) transformer, but then I have only a little extra capacity. I will be using 12/2 wire, so not too much voltage drop in 80 feet. In your own lighting kit with 6 20 watt lights you're only using 40% of the capacity?? Thanks!!
Thanks for the kudo's! I have a lot of fun answering all the great questions I get from people such as yourself. Depending on the plant material around the base of the Pear Tree, I would use two 50-watt LOW VOLTAGE HALOGEN UP LIGHTS (EXN 38 degree lamps) for a balanced and dramatic display. If it is lawn, I would go with GRADE LEVEL UP LIGHTS (50PAR36/WFL lamp). As far as the TRANSFORMER, you should get the 150-watt ECONOMICAL POWER SUPPLY and use 12/2 DIRECT BURIAL CABLE under the driveway to feed the light. You might run two cables (one for each light) just in case one fails you can always go to one cable. Send us some digital pictures and we will add them to our OUTDOOR LIGHTING GALLERY. Enjoy!

I have installed large boxes on my deck that I put potted plants in. I would like to light these, but am not sure what to use. Could you please let me know what would work best? I also have a wall built as to hide my grill from the deck and would like to put lighting on the wall. What type of lights should I use? Thank you for your prompt response.
You can spot light your planters with a
LOW VOLTAGE ACCENT LIGHT mounted in an adjacent tree or soffit of the house. You can also put a
MUSHROOM PATH LIGHT in the planter to illuminate the plants. For the wall you could use some
LOW VOLTAGE STEP LIGHTS for safety or some
UP LIGHTS to accent the wall. You will need a
LOW VOLTAGE POWER SUPPLY and
LOW VOLTAGE CABLE to complete the job.

I bought a house that has one of these and honest to gosh can't figure out how to change the lightbulb. How do you remove the glass cover to get at the bulbs?
Changing the light bulb is quite easy on your
NUTONE QT9093WH HEAT/VENT LIGHT. The front grill cover and glass lens is held is place by two springs called "Chicken Leg" springs. You simply pull down on the outside cover avout 3" and then push the springs together with your fingers to release the grill from the housing. Good Luck!

I just purchased (22)20 watt low voltage landscape lights. I want to run these lights around my pool totaling 150'' of wire. The lights are going to be spaced evenly the entire 150''. My question is what size wire should i use, and what size transformer on this straight run with no splices? Also can I use a 600 watt transformer with (2)300 watt circuits, and just bridge the transformer for a (1) 600 watt output for this project.
You need to run multiple 12/2 LANDSCAPE CABLES to groups of lights totaling roughly 100 watts each. We have 10/2 CABLE which is good for 30 amps and longer runs. Otherwise, you will have VOLTAGE DROP PROBLEMS and dim lights on the end of the runs The transformer has two 300 watt circuits for a reason! Follow the manufacturer''s instructions do not exceed 300-watts per circuit.

I have 14 recessed lights on one lutron switch dimmer combo that is getting hot. The bulb watts is 960 but the lutron switch is rated 1000. why is it getting so hot to the touch?
During normal operation, solid-state dimmers generate heat. A solid-state dimmer is roughly 98% efficient-2% of the power is dissipates as heat, causing the dimmer to feel warm to the touch. The closer a dimmer is run to full output and the higher the load (watts) on the dimmer, the warmer it will feel. This is perfectly normal and safe.
LUTRON DIMMERS AND LIGHTING CONTROLS are designed to the strictest UL safety standard, and can handle their full rated load (a 600 Watt dimmer can handle a full 600W of power without overheating.

What is xenon lighting. How is it different from incandescent and flourescent? How much do the bulbs cost? Does it require a transformer?
XENON LIGHTING is simply a light bulb that is filled with xenon gas and has a carbon filament. The gas causes the light to operate more efficiently which translates into a longer life, brighter source.
FLUORESCENT LIGHTING requires the use of a ballast to ignite the gas which is in the tube. By design these fixture have a lamp life in excess of 24,000 hours.
HALOGEN LIGHTING produces a white light, more heat and requires a
12-VOLT TRANSFORMER to run the lights.

Why is my dimmer switch getting warm when the lights are on? The dimmer switch is rated for 600w, and my 4 recessed lights only add up to 320w. Using 14-2 wire. In another room, I have a standard light switch controlling 425 watts and it never gets warm.
If the
DIMMER CONTROL is ganged with another dimmer in the same box you reduce the 600-watt capacity down to 450-watts. If the switch box is full of wires and does not have room to disipate the heat that may be another cause. And finally, if you have the wrong dimmer or a cheap dimmer for the type of load that can also be a problem. For example, you can only use an electronic dimmer with fixtures that have an electronic transformer. Dimmers by nature do get warm, so don't worry. If it is really hot to the touch, I would contact an electrician to check it out. You might also check out our

Is it safe to use a dimmer switch with flourescent fixtures in my kitchen? We have a 4 bulb fixture. Thanks
The quick answer is NO! Unless you replace the
FLUORESCENT BALLAST with a new one that is designed to operate with a
FLUORESCENT DIMMER CONTROL you will have problems and may cause a fire. This might require rewiring the switch leg. Try installing color corrected lamps in the 3500K range which will soften the light and improve color rendering. Hope that helps!

I just bought a house with an outdoor mercury vapor light. The bulbs are a lot more than regular bulbs is there an adapter to make a regular bulb fit in the fixture or is it worth it to pay so much more for the mercury vapor bulb?
You cannot put a standard incandescent bulb in a mercury vapor fixture due to the
HID BALLAST. Mercury Vapor is an HID source that works by raising the operating voltage of the lamp to excite the gas envelope which in turn creates the light. If you bypass the ballast, by rewiring the fixture, you can install a standard lamp. Before you go to that trouble, did you check our
MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTING OUTDOOR LIGHTING prices? The reason they cost more is that the lamp life on a
MERCURY VAPOR LAMP is 24,000 hours compared to 2,000 on a standard lamp. I would invest in the right lamp for the fixture and go on to the next item on the "Honey Do List".

I work for a company that manufactures low voltage lighting. Regarding a previous post: Can two or more lower capacity transformers be wired in such a way as to allow for a greater number of fixtures to be installed on the same run of cable?
I would not recommend that you parallel two transformers on one line to correct a voltgae drop problem. The total wattage of the fixtures is governed by the overall capacity of the transformer. For example, a 300KVA transformer is good for about 240 watts of light. 240 watts divided by 12 volts equals roughly 20 amps. Number 12/2 cable is good for 20 amps and number 10/2 wire is good for 30 amps. So, I would recommend that you run a continuous loop of wire in and out of the transformer to beat the problems associated with voltage drop. You may want to add to that answer that the customer should check with the manufacturer about "looping" back to the transformer. If they do not connect the same side of the low voltage cable to the same terminal screw, it CAN damage the power packs, depending on the manufacuter. Also...with our power packs, if you have a 300 watt unit, you can run up to 300 watts worth of 12 volt bulbs on it. Again, it depends on the manufacturer.
Thank you for the recommendation! It is always a good idea to consult the manufacturer for information about a specific product. I appreciate and welcome all comments regarding postings on this web site.

I''m looking at your step lights, TEC TLLVSL low voltage. Do they go every step or every 2 or 3 for adequate coverage? In addition to the main steps I have a lowered section of the deck with 4 steps about 25 feet long. How far apart would I put lights in this section? Thanks, Andy Goodwin
I would put one TECHLIGHT STEP LIGHT on each step just for safety. Remember light travels in a straight line and so do shadows. So, I would test using a flashlight to see how bad the shadows are before making your decision. I always try to line up my fixtures for aesthetic reasons. Use some sticky notes to help you lay them out and visualize different configurations. I just bought a home that has quite an extensive low voltage lighting system. The fixtures look good and the placement is not bad. They quit working last week and I finally figured out it is the transformer. There are six cables leaving the transformer going out in different directions. From the best I can tell, I have roughly 800 watts total. Can you help me select a replacement?
Wow! That's quite a big low voltage lighting system you inherited. If you have that much wattage, I would go with a
FOCUS HIGH OUTPUT TRANSFORMER with room to connect all those wires and the ability to adjust the voltage to each home run. We also have other
FOCUS TRANSFORMERS if you want to look at your other choices.

I am a general contractor who is building a series of shopping centers for a major developer. We have about (50) 30' square poles with (4) 1000-watt high pressure sodium fixtures in the bid. The developer has agreed to accept a substitute for these fixtures if I can find a quality pole replacement which means money in my pocket! What do you have that might work?
We have one of the best selections of

I need to replace some fire and smoke alarms in my residence. We currently have ones that have yellowed and use the old style batteries that need changing every year. What
recommendations do suggest for a easy retrofit?
BRK makes a great little
SMOKE ALARM designed specifically for residential use in several rooms as well as with alarm bells. You still will have to change batteries from time to time, just as a precaution. I am assuming you have 120 volt power at each location and a third wire to interconnect the devices.
We also have a
FireX brand that is a
COMBINATION SMOKE AND CO2 ALARM that is very popular. This device works with or without 120 volt power and does have a battery to power the unit. If you don't want the CO2 feature you can use the
FireX brand of
SMOKE DETECTOR SMOKE ALARM IONIZATION AC POWERED SMOKE ALARM.

I was recently at a theme park and enjoyed the music coming form the flowerbeds.
The speakers were partially buried, round and green in color. Do you have anything like that?
What you are describing is the
OMNI OUTDOOR SPEAKER that is typically used around spas, playgrounds, and amusement parks. We have many models including
ROCK SPEAKERS and
OUTDOOR ROCK LIGHTS!

I am on a committee at my country club to investigate replacing our parking lot fixtures with some fancier looking ones. The footings are still in good condition and the bolts look good as well. The poles are rusted and the fixtures are in terrible condition. Can I use the old footings for new poles? If so, what can you recommend?
If the footings are at least 18" in diameter and deep enough to support your selection, I don't see why not. We have some really handsome
DECORATIVE OUTDOOR LIGHTING PARKING LOT KITS that would work well in the parking area. Why don't you give James a call at 800-239-2939 for design assistance and a quote.

12V fixtures I have seen say "don't install within 10 feet of a fountain". Are there any (other than underwater fixtures) that I can install within 10 feet of a fountain? Or, is there anyway I can install them closer than 10 feet? For example, if I use a transformer rated for underwater fixtures, can I then install them closer than 10 feet of a fountain?
The real reason for the distance requirement is to prevent shock hazards and UL conflicts since some fixtures are rated for damp locations and others are submersible. As long as you install a GFCI receptacle to power the transformer you should be fine if you maintain a six foot distance.
We have some BRASS UNDERWATER LIGHTS, COPPER ACCENT LIGHTS, and COPPER PATH LIGHTS that will work around your fountain.

I just installed a new sign in front of my business that needs good lighting. We have a flower bed surrounding the sign to hide the fixture. Is there something low and unobtrusive?
We have several FLUORESCENT LIGHT FIXTURES that would be suitable for illuminating a lengthy low profile sign. I would recommend one of our
SIGN LIGHTERS for this kind of application. If you sign has a vertical orientation, you should use one or more
FLUORESCENT FLOOD FIXTURES. Check out this

I own a small
restaurant that has a pretty decent dinner crowd at night. I just started selling wine and beer and would like to do something special that would set me apart form the other bar establishments in the neighborhood. What do you have that would create some ambiance and some
excitement for my patrons?
Well, we have many things that would look good in your
restaurant. However, if you just started selling wine, you might be interested in our
LIGHTED WINE CHILLERS. They are battery powered with colored LED lights that flash and change colors. They are very cool and you could use them to promote a nightly wine special! Trust me,
everyone in the bar will notice who has one!
We also have many
LIGHTED TABLE TOP ART OBJECTS that would certainly jazz things up for your dinner crowd.
If you want to really do something special, you should install some

What can you tell me about Xenon
under cabinet lights? My neighbor just installed some and I think the look great? From your web site, I see they also come in Halogen? Which do you recommend?
Personally, I like the
XENON UNDER CABINET LIGHTS better than the
HALOGEN UNDER CABINET LIGHTS because they don't require a transformer, have a longer lamp life and produce less heat. Both do an
excellent job of task lighting, as well as
FLUORESCENT UNDER CABINET FIXTURES.

I am wanting to do something different this year for outdoor Christmas decorations at my home. Most of my lights aren't working and I think it is time to just buy some new equipment. Your selection of Seasonal lighting products is frankly overwhelming! What do you recommend for long life miniature twinkle lights?
We do have many selections of OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS to choose from. If you are looking for a good buy on energy efficient lights, I would consider the
LED C6 STRINGS which come (20 strings to the box) and have a 60,000 hour lamp life. Our
PREMIUM STRING LIGHTS (36 strings to the box) are very nice as well, and have a 25,000 hour lamp life!
In addition, the
NET LIGHTS and
OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS YARD DECORATIONS are very popular and extremely easy to install.

I have a 100''deep X 70''wide backyard There is a 70''tall oak tree on one side about halfway down the yard can i use this tree to create a moonlight type of glow throughout my whole backyard or do I need to find multiple locations to even out the light in the yard. I don''t want it bright rather a nice even moonlight type of glow throughout the back yard. Also how high up the tree should I install the lights? Please recommend the product or products I should use. Thank You
I would install two 175-WATT MERCURY VAPOR DOWN LIGHTS as high as you are willing to climb up in the tree. Shine one light in each direction to softly filter the light through the limbs creating the moonlighting on the ground that you have described. Of course, the light will be brighter on the side of the yard with the tree due to distance. So, if you have some other trees you can install a couple 50-WATT MERCURY VAPOR R20 UP LIGHTS or 50-WATT MERCURY VAPOR R20 DOWN LIGHTS for balance and beauty. You can always fax a drawing of your yard (toll free) to 877-272-0577 and we will be glad to assist you with a more comprehensive design and cost estimate.

I am interested in converting about a dozen metal tea lamps to low voltage path lighting. I would like to know whether you sell low voltage light sockets that I could install in the tea lamps. Thanks.
There are many ways to electrify your tea lanterns depending on the size requirements. We have a
single contact base 12 volt socket with a mounting bracket.
We also have a
single contact base socket designed to snap into a 3/4" hole that may be of interest to you.
You can use any miniature automotive lamp such as a #93 (~7.5 watts), a #1141 (~15.0 watts), or a #1156 (~30.0 watts) in conjunction with a low voltage
transformer and
low voltage wire.
Sounds like a great project, let me know how it goes!

I had a Hampton Bay 600 W transformer that burnt out in about a month. I have about 500 W worth of outdoor light on 12 gauge wire. Could you recommend a good transformer in the 900-1200 watt range with a photo cell that I could run 3 to 4 circuits on. I have 12 V supply out by the pool equipment as my power supply. Thanks
If you have only 500 watts of lights currently, a
STANDARD 600 WATT TRANSFORMER will work just fine. Hopefully you have split your loads on the 12
gauge wire to balance the system properly! My rule of thumb is a maximum of 100 watts per 100 feet of 12/2 wire. That way you can expect the lights to be good and bright without experiencing a voltage drop problem. If you have the need to step up the voltage to overcome a wiring problem due to distance we also have
FOCUS HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS as well.

Hello, I installed low voltage lighting for my home landscaping but some of the
up lights I used for tree's because they are pointing almost straight up collect water on the fixture. Mine are similar the Focus
FOC DL-21-color. Is this
OK? or should I get something like the Focus
FOC DL-05-BRASS to prevent water from just sitting on the fixture? Also what wattage and beam size do you recommend for
up lighting columns on a house? (about 25' high) Thanks
If the fixtures have a lens and gasket it should be fine. All landscape lighting fixtures weep water through the fixture from moisture, condensation and leaks. For MR16 lamps I would suggest that you use one that is designed with a glass front attached to the light bulb. It helps keep the reflector free from dirt and debris. For spotting the columns, I would use a 20-watt (
ESX) spot or a 50-watt (EXT) spot. Both have a 10 degree beam pattern and will do a good job accenting the columns.

I'm looking for a cheap substitute to neon
under body lighting for my art car. I was looking at the 12v rope lights, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to connect the ends of the cut lengths. I want to have a 3 foot segment running along the front and back and 4 foot long
pieces on each side. I do not know if it will work, but would appreciate any help you can give. Thank you!
It would work well. You simply splice the wires to line running back to the battery. You can order the
ROPE LIGHTS pre-cut to your specifications and we have several colors to choose from. Sounds like a fun project!

My Panasonic bathroom vent fan is filthy. How can you remove the outer grill for cleaning?
Most of the
PANASONIC EXHAUST FANS have grills that are held in place by two springs which we call "Chicken Legs". Pull the grill straight down from the ceiling until it stops. Then disengage the springs from the housing to remove for cleaning. Having a clean grill is the best way to insure that you are getting proper performance from the fan.

Are there some rules of thumb about how frequently or where path lights should be placed? I have a stone walk that I am trying to illuminate.
Most quality
LOW VOLTAGE PATH LIGHTS are between 12" and 23" in height. A 12"
path light spreads roughly 4' to 6' in diameter and an 23" path light spreads roughly 6' to 10' depending on the hood of the fixture. I like to create individual pools of light by following these
guidelines and alternating the fixtures from side to side for a more attractive look.

I am a Christmas decorator bidding on 2 shopping centers to do their lighting for the holidays. If I buy C7's in a 1000-foot reel, how long can I make my cords? What is shipping cost and time to California 91350? Thank you.
Thank you for your inquiry. You can go a maximum of 7 amps or 840 watts per run using the C7 or C9 lamps. We have the
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS in stock and you are looking at 5-7 days for ground shipping or faster if you request rush shipping.

What is the difference between twinkle lighting and white lights for year round display, besides the obvious differences? Are they sold only by the case? What is your minimum order requirements?
Twinkle lights and white lights are basically the same thing. Both are designed for temporary use due to lamp life and light duty wiring. We do have some
LINE VOLTAGE GLOBE LIGHTS that are specifically designed for permanent applications as well as
COMMERCIAL GRADE MINIATURE LIGHTS and
LED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS.

I have several
Nightscaping brand "
Foot liters" in a copper finish. What is the best product to clean these fixtures? After cleaning, how should they be maintained?
Most people purchase
COPPER PATH LIGHT FIXTURES for their durability and the patina that you get over time.
Nightscaping fixtures are well made! If you want to polish them up you might try
Brasso or another polishing
compound. Once you get them cleaned up and rinsed off you can spray them with a clear coat
urethane to maintain the finish. You can also pick up some oxidizer at your local jeweler's supply in brown, black and green.

I am looking for some small up light fixtures that I can use around my villa in the garden. What do you have in say a fluorescent fixture?
We have a large selection of FLUORESCENT OUTDOOR LIGHTING FIXTURES suitable for landscape illumination. They are perfect for facade lighting as well as up lighting trees and shrubs. I would use a warm white lamp (2700K) on the house and a cool white lamp (4100K) on the plant materials for contrast.

I have 14 (set of two each) 7 watt lights with a run of wiring of approx. 75 feet. The wiring used was 16 gauge. What size transformer could I use to light my driveway. Currently, I have a 300 watt transformer that lights the first 7 sets of lights, but very dim. Please advise.
The issue is not the size or wattage of your transformer. Rather, dim landscape lights are usually the result of voltage drop. Voltage drop is caused by too small of wire, too many lights and long runs of a cable from the transformer. My neighbor has one of those barn lights mounted on the side of his house. Although I enjoy the security aspect, I can't sleep at night because the light shines into my bedroom window. Do you have anything that will shield the light?
Yes, we have the perfect solution to your problem. We carry a product from RAB Lighting called
"THE SHADE" which is designed to eliminate unsightly glare and reduce light pollution. The alternative is alumium foil or painting the fixture lens black. Show this to your neighbor and offer to buy the shade. We also have a
