Hi, I am looking for some sort of strip light or flourescent lights that I can hang under each shelf of my china cabinet to light up the items in the cabinet. I am looking for something that runs on batteries so I dont have to drill holes into the back of the china cabinet. Any suggestions?
The
BATTERY OPERATED PICTURE LIGHTS we have are not really designed to do what you want. We do have
HOUSE OF TROY ADVENT STRIP LIGHTS that are very easy to install and the wires can be spliced inside the cabinet. That way you only have to drill one small hole for the cord to exit the back of the cabinet. We have

I have a question regarding the Malibu transformer power pack. I have it plugged in no lights attached and it hums whether it is switched on or off.The lights work perfect when it is on(hums a little more loudly). Is it supposed to be humming all the time? Just curious if it was normal.
The humming is normal for all transformers and ballasts. Read my TRANSFORMER & BALLAST NOISE PAGE for more information on controlling the hums and buzzes.

I read your posting on using outdoor low voltage landscape lights at a distance from the transformer and the voltage drop problem. I eliminated that problem with my driveway lights by using a plastic electrical box with cover and putting a transformer inside. I used potting compound in the box to prevent moisture problems and connected it to the 14 gauge
UF with 12 gauge zip cord for the low voltage AC from the secondary. I buried the boxes and each feeds 5 lights. I use an AC dimmer to control the feed to the transformers primary. With this configuration I have no appreciable low voltage drop and have full control of the driveway light intensity. It works well. Just wanted to let you in on this and hope you pass it on to others that may want to try it. It is a bit labor intensive and I would recommend testing the transformer assemblies before potting. Make a few extras, while you are at it.

We have several POND & UNDERWATER LIGHTS that would work. The
HADCO UWL1-A LOW VOLTAGE POND LIGHT would be my first choice. It comes with a small shield that fits inside the lens that blocks the light from the front view. The

I just bought a
Lutron-Skylark electronic low-voltage dimmer switch 300Watt. The problem is in the manual it says I need a neutral wire to be in the junction box. However, when I pulled the cover plate off of the existing switch there were only two black wires connected to the switch with white ones taped together in the back. There are only two wires it looks like to install new switch to. What should I do? The directions show connecting three wires to the new switch, but I've only got two!!?? House built in mid 1960's. I hope I can avoid calling an electrician to run a neutral wire from the panel box. I'm hoping you won't tell me I have to do this. Thanks for your help.
I'm afraid you will need a neutral wire to make the
SKYLARK ELECTRONIC DIMMER CONTROL work. However, you don't need to go all the way back to the panel. Locate a receptacle in the wall adjacent to the switch and you can pick up a neutral there. It may require cutting the drywall or if your lucky just fishing a wire. Unless you are comfortable working with electricity, I would call a electrician for assistance installing your

I have a couple of questions on a House of Troy HOT RT-8 battery operated picture light. How do you turn it on and off? What size picture can it
illuminate? How accessible is the rechargeable battery?
The
HOUSE OF TROY BATTERY OPERATED PICTURE LIGHT is really designed for small to medium sized paintings up to 18" wide. The fixture is mostly a big battery with a relatively small light source. The switch is located in the shade and it will operate for 6-8 hours before needing a recharge. If you don't have a plug near by the fixture can easily be removed and plugged in anywhere. Yes, you can install a
LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL on a four way switching system. Find the switch with only three wires and replace it with a three way dimmer. If your halogen lamps are low voltage, and have a transformer, you will need either a

I would like to know how to figure out how many recessed lights go on one 20amp
circuit. Do you have a sheet or equation to help figure the load?

In a bathroom application, I recently installed two 300watt halogen vanity lights that are controlled by one single-pole switch. On the same power source (hot wire) are two other lighting sources (and switches)in the bathroom. Prior to installation, all switches operated normally. When I installed the dimmer switch (first a 600w then a 1000w-halogen) for the vanity light, however, ALL THREE switches failed to operate. (Yes, I even switch the wires to cover all options) Strangely enough, when I moved the dimmer swithch to one of the other two switch locations (all are single-pole), the dimmer did work. The switch for the dimmer receives the "hot" wire from the adjacent switch. My efforts tend to indicate that the wiring may be the problem. Can you help me to understand what may be my problem?
Generally there is one hot wire or circuit per switch box that feeds all the devices. The white or neutral wires are usually twisted together. When you installed the
DIMMER SWITCH you must have disconnected the hot wire to the other switches by mistake. Sounds like you got things corrected, otherwise the breaker would have tripped indicating otherwise. Glad to hear that you used a
1000-WATT DIMMER SWITCH on that 600-watt load. Be careful!

What kind of dimmer switch or any device that I would need , to solve the buzzing noise problem for low voltage track light with dimmer ? Thanks
The buzz is normally caused by the wrong type or size of
DIMMER CONTROL. If your fixtures are low voltage they have either have a magnetic or electronic transformer. There are dimmers specifically designed for both types on our website. You need to identify the total wattage of the load and verify the type of load. Once you have that figured out, it should be fairly simple to select the right dimmer to solve the problem. You might also take a look at our
LUTRON FAQ'S regarding this matter. Good Luck!

I wanted to know what the best way to connect a " Y "(or one into two) on my low voltage landscape lights. With the single end going to the transformer & then appx.50ft. out is where I need the " Y " connection at, & then continue out appx 25-35ft on each of those ends. Would I just tie into the main wire coming off the transformer? My light system output is 12v A.C. Thank you very much!
If you are planning to splice the wires and split the load you must first calculate the total amperage of the load. This is done by dividing the total wattage by the voltage and which is explained in our
DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING PAGE. If you are using
12/2 LANDSCAPE LIGHTING CABLE you must stay below 20 amps. FYI -
10/2 LANDCAPE WIRE is good for 30 amps. You can run 200 watts approximately 75-100' feet before you begin to experience voltage drop with #12. Although it may cost more, it is always better to run individual wires or install a continuous loop to avoid voltage drop. I would check with your transformer manufacture to see if a continuous loop sytem is right for you. Good Luck!

Solar landscape lights verses hardwire. Their only for looks so being low voltage it seems they would be fine? Your thoughts please. Thanks
Solar lights are very appealing because of the ease of installation and cost. However, most solar landscape lighting is not very effective beause they produce very little light and get dimmer as the battery runs out. I prefer a HARD WIRED OUTDOOR LIGHTING SYSTEM over solar because it is more reliable and produces a more desirable lighting design. we have many OUTDOOR LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS that are easy to install and come with everything you need.

I'M AN ELECTRICIAN AND DONE JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING BUT I''M WORKING WITH A HOME OWNER WHO WANT''S TO LIGHT UP HIS HOUSE AT NIGHT ( NOT BRIGHT ). I HAVE WORKED IN FACTORIES WHERE THE LIGHTING IS CONTROLLED FROM REMOTE BALLASTS. IF I WANTED TO STRING ABOUT 6 OR SO 50WATT MV. LIGHTS AROUND THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE ,WHAT TYPE OF BALLAST WOULD I NEED AND DO YOU HAVE IT ?. FROM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AN R-30 LAMP IN SOME TYPE OF FIXTURE MIGHT DO IT.SUGGESTIONS?
If you want to light the house, I would not use mercury vapor, but rather a warmer source such as INCANDESCENT. We have several LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING KITS with everything you need to do the installation. I prefer the MR16 LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTS due to the size of the fixture and color of the light. If you are lighting trees or shrubs we have a great selection of MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTING FIXTURES in all shapes and wattages and 50-WATT MERCURY VAPOR UP LIGHT is the lowest wattage we have. Whatever the wattage, you can remote mount the ballast up to 75'' away from the light. We also have a HUB MOUNT OPTION to mount the fixture directly on the box.

I am trying to design an outdoor lighting system that will light the outside of the house (the walls in front) The sidwalk is very close to the house(2.5 feet) so what kind of light would spread far enough to light the wall and yet go up high on the same wall. Should I use a rectangular fixture or should I use the roung bullet lights? What is the angle of disbursed light from the fixture? What wattage should I expect to use to gauge the transformer? What is your least expensive up light for trees. I am not interested in fancy metals, just something simple that the lawnmower will not eat.thank you
The BULLET SHAPED LOW VOLTAGE UP LIGHTS (50 watt) have more punch as far as throwing light, but don''t do as well in short wide throws. Since your sidewalk is so close to the house, I would go with a RECTANGULAR LOW VOLTAGE WALL WASHER FIXTURE (35 watt) for even illumination on the house. You should use 12/2 GAUGE LOW VOLTAGE WIRE with no more than 100 watts per 100'' home run back to the transformer. As far as the transformer, I like the TECHLIGHT 600 POWER SUPPLY for the price.

We are building on 20 acres with house on top and majority of the land drops down to the valley floor 800ft. below. I would like to have a couple pole lights that will illuminate smaller areas as "guide lights" on the way down for when we take in night time fire pits, etc. I do not wish to have these lights on all night every night. The idea would be to "switch" the light on from the house then when I am down to that particular light pole, I have a choice to either turn that light off completely or "dim" it down if preferred. I imagine the pole being no higher then 12'' (to 15?) Do they make such, and if so, what would you recommend?Thank you for your attention, DEE
I would recommend that you consider using FOCUS COPPER PATH LIGHTS to illuminate your trail to the firepit! I would put a PATH LIGHT every 20'' or so and alternate back and forth for a handsome look. Having pole lights will certainly be more efficient, but path lights are more charming and won''t create light pollution preventing you for enjoying the stars on a clear evening. For that distance you will need to run 10/2 UF DIRECT BURIAL CABLE or underground wiring to at least four TRANSFORMER LOCATIONS to power up the lights.

I have a Malibu ML300TRW power pack and the instructions cover only terminal blocks A & B -- what is C used for? Thanks
The "C" terminal on your MALIBU ML300TRW TRANFORMER is not used on this model. On larger transformers, the "C" teriminal is used for additional circuits. Simply put your wires under terminals "A" and "B". That will get you the 12 volt output you need to power up your OUTDOOR LIGHTING SYSTEM TRANSFORMER.

The wiring for my low voltage malibu lights were cut by a shovel wielding gardener. How do I connect the front half works fine?
Wiring for LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING is pretty simple. Splicing a wire is no big deal! Just strip back the wires and make a splice with wirenuts filled with silicone sealer. Then tape the connections with electrical tape for extra precautions. If you want to run LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING CABLE we have both 10/2 and 12/2 LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING WIRE.

Can you detail the best way to splice a low voltage outdoor lighting fixture onto main power cable? I want to eliminate my existing quick connectors with a more permenant solution (1/2 of them seem to fail every winter). I''ve seen the suggestion about silcon in the wire nut, but how do I do the rest? For instance, do I cut my main cable (12/2) & wrap the ends together with the leads for the light fixture into a wire nut? There must be a better technique. That seems like way too many cuts on the main cable.
There are several ways you can splice into your main cable to eliminate the quick connectors. Of course, the easiest way is to simply cut the cable, strip back the wires, install a silicon filled wirenut (bathroom silicon sealer) and wrap the splice with electrical tape. If you have a crimping tool you can get crimping nuts or inline butt connectors. You can use 3M shrink wrap over the whichever splice to protect the connections.
We also have HEAVY DUTY QUICK CONNECTORS should you decide to just replace those. It''s the corrosion where the connector penertrates the wire that is usually the problem. For your older system, you caould also move the connectors to a new location on the wire to solve the problem.

I have been doing some research on picture lights over the internet. I am looking for a small contemporaty picture light for my family portrait. What can you tell me about the House of Troy fixture?

I have a Malibu 600 W (300 X 2) tranformer for my 12 V landscaping lighting. One side of the transformer has 3X20 W lights over 140 ft, on a 12 gauge wire which is working well. The other side has two divisions after a 125 foot run with 2X50W on one limb over 50 ft. Second limb has 5X20W over 75 ft. The lights on both limbs are dim. Please suggest some options to address this. Thanks
This is a classic case of voltage drop! I don't recommend running more than 100' with 120-watts on a 12/2 cable for this vary reason.
You can run another 12/3 or even better a 10/2 cable cable and split the lights into more home runs or connect the cables into a continous loop system. In other words, feed the lights from both ends. You just need to be careful not to cross the polarity of the wires and short circuit the system. This will boost the power and balance out the lighting levels. If that doesn't work, you can always use a HIGH OUTPUT TRANSFORMER to boost the voltage and solve the problem.
You might take a look at our CALCULATING VOLTAGE DROP INFORMATION page for more ideas on the subject.

I own a automotive paint and body shop that has terrible fluorescent lighting in the work area. What do you suggest to bright things up? My warehouse is roughly 20' high and I currently have twelve 8' double fluorescent strips.
Sounds like you are a good candidate for
COMMERCIAL HID LIGHTING. For your application, I would go with a
400-WATT METAL HALIDE FIXTURE that has a metal enclosure and a lens since your shop is probably dusty. We have other
LOW BAY FIXTURES as well. All of these fixtures have multi-tap ballasts which means they will work on 120, 208, 240 and 277 volt circuits. Please note that we have quantity discounts available!

I am interested in cutting my energy consumption to save money. Someone told me that going to
fluorescent light bulbs would do just that. Is that true?
Yes,
26-WATT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS produce more
lumen's per watt, therefore a lower wattage fluorescent lamp produces more light than a higher wattage 100-watt incandescent lamp. That's why you use less energy and save money. They also will last longer and require fewer replacements. They come in many shapes and sizes including an
A-LAMP REPLACEMENT and a
REFLECTOR FLOOD LAMP.

I have a large above-ground pool (40x24) with a huge deck. Is it ok to put low voltage lighting around the deck close to the pool and what would you recommend?
It is a good idea to maintain a distance of 6'' back from the pool with any lighting fixtures. Also, make sure all lighting is protected by aGFCI receptacle. As to what kind of lighting you use, it depends on the plant materials you have aroung the pool. If you have trees, I would go with some LOW VOLTAGE UP LIGHTS and maybe some 12 VOLT ROPE LIGHTING (PEARL WHITE) under the deck railing. You can also introduce STEP LIGHTS or PATH LIGHTS if you have steps or adjacent flower beds.

Hi - I am installing outdoor lighting on top of 5 columns I've constructed within a retaining wall. The total run from power source to last light is 130 feet with a few curves and 90 degree turns in between the columns. From the power source to the first column, (30 feet) the land is low and prone to flooding in the winter & spring. Also, there is a tremendous slab of concrete buried less than a foot under grade in this low spot (original, incorrectly placed foundation for house)."CAN" I run UF #12 INSIDE sched. 40 conduit or will this cause it to overheat in the summer?? Also, From the first column forward, can I run the UF wire attached to the back of the retaining wall 18 inches down (wall is 12 inches thick)? Or should I use conduit all along the course? The wire will be sitting in drainage gravel behind the wall. Lastly, I want three lights on one dimmer switch, and two on a separate dimmer. Should I use three wire or run two separate courses of two wire? Thank you so much for your time!
It is perfectly fine to install
U/F CABLE inside PVC conduit. Officially, both PVC or U/F cable should be buried at least 18" to comply with NEC regulations whenever possible. If you want to control your lights seperately it will necessary to install a three wire sytem with a ground or two
14/2 U/F CABLES. I would use at least 3/4" or 1" PVC to make the installation easier. You can use liquid dish soap as a pulling lubricant. If you need any lights, you might check out our full selection of

I have a Twilight 500 watt transformer. It has a setting that allows it to turn on at dusk (via photocell) and the turn off any where from 5 to 9 hours later. Well after the last hurrincane, it would not turn the lights off after the set amount of hours following sunset. I replaced the photocell and it just remains on now, no matter what setting the dile is turned, except for off. I have also pressed the reset button on the bottom of the unit. Is there a replacement control unit or is there a way to bypass it without having to manually turn it on and off? Thank you.
You can install a
PHOTOCELL on the line side of the transformer or a
TIME CLOCK. We also have some excellent pricing on
TRANSFORMERS if you want to start over.

I want to uplight 3 very large oak trees in my back yard. 2 trees are 30 feet from the planned mounting location and 1 is around 90 feet away. Each tree is around 70 feet high. Can I illuminate them with low voltage floods or must I use 120 volt? Watts? Bulb type? Can I aim a 120 volt fixture into the sky? I also want to turn them on demand. Do any transformers have on/off switches?
You could light them with low voltage lighting but it will be more effective with mercury vapor line voltage fixtures. I would use two
175 WATT MERCURY VAPOR UP LIGHTS for each tree. You can either select the hub option to mount the light directly on the ballast box or remote the ballast for a cleaner look up to 100 feet away! It will look fantastic and the fixtures are designed to point upwards without a problem. We also have
TIME CLOCKS and
PHOTOCELLS to automate your lighting system. Contact us at 800-239-2939 for more

Hi, my family and I recently moved into a new house we built, and decided to install an in-ground pool before we did anything with the yard. So, now that the pool is complete, we have a landscape company working on the design of the yard.I would like to install lights throughout the property, and all the lighting companies in the area that I have contacted are so very overpriced. Therefore I thought I would attempt to do this project myself. I have found a product manufacturer that I think I prefer to buy the lights from, I would just like to know how I should go about designing a plan and how to decide where I need lights, how many and which type of light to use, etc. Can you be of any assistance? Thank you and regards.
We have many
OUTDOOR LIGHTING KITS that will work around your pool and that are easy to install. I would start by illuminating any trees or large shrubs with some 20-watt halogen up lights. Then you can scatter some
PATH LIGHTS around the pool decking to illuminate the paving and surrounding foliage. If you have a formal landscaping plan fax us a copy to 713-863-0044 and we will help you select a system.

Could you please tell me how I would install the rope lighting to go with my crown molding on my tray ceiling that I am also installing or is there a different type of light that goes with crown moldings on my tray ceiling? Thanks
I would use the
120 VOLT ROPE LIGHTING for your tray ceiling. The bigger the space you provide behind the moulding the more attactive the lighting will be. I would allow at least three inches minimum for a smooth even distribution. You might also consider using
PHANTOM STRIP LIGHTS if you are interested in have higher light levels.

I need a light fixture for my porch roof. I currently have a square box about 6" on side with two 60 watt bulbs inside a four sided glass enclosure. I would like a replacement that would turn on automatically when someone steps on the porch at night.
They don't really make a recessed motion light. However, you could install a
OCCUPANCY SENSOR,
MOTION SENSOR or a
MOTION DETECTOR adjacent to the fixture and have it turn it on.

We installed door light switch with the
fluorescent light. Problem.. the
fluorescent light did not turn on fast enough. Is it because of the door jamb in low voltage?
Fluorescent lights are not considered a good choice for instant on applications using a
DOOR JAMB SWITCH. They are really designed to be left on for extended periods of time. Turning them off and on over time weakens the electrodes and causes them to ultimately fail. You might consider switching to an incandescent fixture or upgrading your fixture to one with an electronic ballast.

I am putting lighting over art work in a restaurant on walls behind tables and want to be sure that the lighting doesn't interfear with the guests sitting down eating and seeing the bulbs as the lighting will be above their heads and at a close distance, approx 3 to 6 '. I will need about 15 fixtures for various size paintings. Do you have any suggestions. These will have to be shipped out of the US to Belize. Any problems with that? Thanks
We can ship the fixtures if you send a cashier's check or a wire transfer. I would install
RECESSED OUTLETS behind each picture and put them all on a
LUTRON DIMMER CONTROL for mood setting. The House of Troy
TRADITIONAL or
SLIMLINE fixtures are our most popular models.

I had previously submitted a question about lighting the vaulted ceiling of a timber frame house. Based on your advice, I''ve decided to use the 120 volt rope lighting and I will lay it on top of some timbers that are up near the ceiling. The only place you may see the lighting is from the second floor catwalk. I''d prefer to use the smaller diameter rope lighting (so it is less visible) but was wondering about it''s light output compared to the 1/2" (larger diameter) rope lighting. Is there a big difference in light output between these two? I plan to put them on a dimmer switch. Thank you very much.
There is no difference in wattage between the two sizes of light rope. Both sizes of ROPE LIGHTS produce 5.5 watts per linear foot. You may want to install two runs if you think you need more light. It is also cool to run a white and blue if you have a light colored ceiling.

I have a motion detector flood light that does come on at dark with motion but it also will stay on. I''ve moved the sensor, cut back on sensitivity etc. but it still stays on. It is over my garage. Any ideas WHY it stays on??Thanks

I want to light a fountain that will sit in the center of a pond that is 8 x 8. We have on each end a 2x8 still water area for plants. The fountain is a five foot tierd bowl which spills over and drops to the pond of water below. The pool is 18 inches deep and will be a focal point at the end of a formal area at the rear of our house and is along a fairway on the golf course. We want this feature to be lit at night and done attractively we hope with low votage lighting. Please tell me what size light and how many to use and if used under water will the water spilling over the bowls shimmer with light or will we have to use light above the water? Again, this will be seen by neighbors and we would love to see the water from our house too. What size bulbs and how many do we need? Thanks for your help and immediate response as I have an open ditch for electric wires!!
To properly light your tiered fountain you will need several light sources. One Under water Light to create the shimmering effect from the water movement. And one or more Pin Spots mounted in a tree or on the house to light the upper tiers. I like the MR16 because you can get many different lamps including a 7 degree spot! The actual lamp may vary depending on where you mount the lights and how far the throw is to the fountain. If you only use a underwater light the top of the fountain will be in the dark due to shadowing. To complete the job you will need some 12/2 Landscape Wire and a 12-Volt Transformer. Give us a call at 800-239-2939 to discuss where to mount the lights and which product will get the job done! We are here to assist you!

I''m looking at getting two top access projectors. I need the ceiling hole to be small, hence the top access. What bottom cover plate comes with the projector? How do you set up and aim a top access projector - do you create a bigger hole initially, set it up and then cover up the hole (we can do this since the ceiling is drywall). Do the projectors all come with enough lenses to create narrow/wide beams, or does this need to be specified when ordering? Thanks.
The Phantom Lighting top access is designed to penetrate the ceiling with a small oval hole. It does come with several lens configuratons and can be adjusted for various size works of art. I am placing outdoor speakers in my yard and need to run wire to them. Is low voltage (lighting) wire the same as outdoor speaker wire?Thank you
If you are not planning to install conduits you can most certainly use our cable for speaker wiring. Otherwise, I would probably use a traditional speaker wire with multiple conductors in a conduit. This will allow you to make repairs or reconfigure the system with having to dig up the yard. I hope you can give me some information on how to run wire for low voltage exterior lighting under a concrete walkway. Thank you in advance for your help.
The best way to get under a sidewalk is to jet under it using a 3/4" PVC pipe, female adapter and a water hose. It''s kind of messy, but pretty easy to do. Once you are under just cut the pipe and push the wire through. It''s that easy. Check out our selection of LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING PRODUCTS.

We have used the cheap plastic malibu type light in the past and it''s time to move up. We like the focus AL-03-4T-10 pagoda but are not sure how many we will need. The walk way is 25 feet across the front and 20 feet down the side in an L shape. How many lights would you suggest? Also, we just want the walk highlighted but not brightly lit. Is the 18 watt bulb too bright, the 12 watt not bright enough? Would appreciate your advice. We will also be adding some pond lighting. We know it needs to be brass from reading the archives. Thank you for your assistance.P.S. Having spent the last week looking into this, your website is by far the most helpful, best organized I have seen. Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. I would use four of the Focus AL-03-4T-10 pagoda lights down your sidewalk. I would alternate them from side to side roughly ever five feet for an interesting effect. I would go with the 20-watt halogen lamps for both performance and lamp life. You will also need a transformer and some wire to complete the job.
My favorite underwater light is the Focus SL-33 MR-16 light! It is small, adjustable and very effective for lighting ponds
Hope this helps and we certainly appreciate your business and look forward to serving you!

I am a board member at our local country club and have volunteered to do some groundwork for the construction of four tennis courts. They will all be in line on one level plane. Can you please give me a layout and price of what this would require? Thank you!
We would love to work with you and the board to supply your country club with a professional tennis court lighting design. Four courts side-by-side require six of the Single190 fixture packages and nine of the Dual 2180 fixture packages. We have a full selection of tennis cout and sport court lighting packages. Please email your zip code and customer information to info@rlldesign.com for pricing and shipping information.

I''m just finishing up a major remodelling project and am stuck trying to find good kitchen undercabinet lighting. Your Phantom strips look like a good solution, but I''m looking for something that also has a diffuser because they will be over a polished granite countertop & I want to minimize spot reflections and glare. I like the strips because (1) the electrician has already wired for low-voltage, (2) I have several cabinet sizes I need to match (so fixed-width integrated units don''t match very well), (3) they''re low-profile. Any suggestions? Thanks
Reflective surfaces, especially granite counter tops, are always a problem! To counter the problem, we recommend using frosted lamps which minimizes the refective images. The only way to completely eliminate the reflections is to block the light with a shield. However, that just creates a shadow and restricts the lights from speading. I would recommend that you use our XENON LIGHT STRIP as a task light for your kitchen. Unfortunately, it goes with the territory.

I would like to replace some of my landscaping blocks (concrete) with lights. I would like to shine out onto the yard. Do you have anything like that?
We do not carry any lighted blocks that will do what you have described. We do carry an extensive line of STEP LIGHTS and other LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING FIXTURES that may be of interest to you.

I bought a new 300 watt low voltage transformer that is attached to about 175 feet of wire. The lights that I have attached, although significantly less than the indicated 300, drop off drastically in brightness at about the 100 foot mark. What need I do?
You need to split the lighting load into several home run wires back to the transformer or you can run a continous loop wire from the end of the run back to the transformer to boost your voltage. In other words, feed from both ends! Please review our information page on low voltage lighting designs and voltage calculations.

We just bought the 15'' light for our home volleyball court and would like to know how big and deep of a hole we need to make for the best stability. Thanks.
That really depends on the soil conditions in your area. If you have any doubts you should contact a local engineer for his opinion. We recommend using at least a 16" diameter footing that is 6''-8'' deep. Click here to learn more about concrete footing for outdoor lighting fixtures.

I have 30 ft. 6 trees, approx 25 ft apart, that I''d like to simply ''up light'' with a low voltage system. Including the power source location, I need approx. 200 ft. of line. Can I do this effectively via low voltage? If so, what transformer, wattage, lamps, line etc. would you recommend?Thank you
I would suggest using one of our convenient MR16 Low Voltage Lighting Kits with 50-watt lamps. You will have to run multiple cables from the transformer to various groups of lights. I would put two lights on the two longest runs, three lights on the next group and so forth. Do not exceed 200-watts on any given home run back to the transformer.

I have an old oak tree--about 100 years old & proabably 50 feet high! I would like to light the entire tree and particularily the limb structure. What light combination would you suggest from among your great selection of products? Thanks.
You have several options for up lighting the canopy of your historic Oak tree. One is to mount a large rectangular flood in the crouch of the tree above eye level. For a tree that big, I would recommend a 175 or 250-watt mercury vapor with a four sided glare shield. We have smaller fixtures in other sizes and wattages if you want a softer look. This looks the best if used in combination with mercury vapor down lights to create a "Moonlight" look. Another way is to place one or more mercury vapor up light bullet fixtures concealed in the shrubs arounf the tree using the hub mount option. This approach does not create a hot spot in the tree and showcases the entire tree as well as the trunk , limbs and the crown of the tree. Both methods work well, it really depends how well you can hide the equipment. Labels: Mercury Vapor Lights, MV Bullet Lights, Oak Tree Lighting
I have some Kichler outside path lights that over time have lost their finish and are now unattractive. My question is can the exterior of these light fixtures be painted with ordinary paint? Or will the heat from the low voltage lamp damage the paint? Thank you.
Sure, you can sand the fixtures and refinish them with a good quality spray paint. If you are considering black you can get gloss engine enamal at the auto parts or barbeque black at the hardware store which has a matte finish. Whatever color you go, the heat from your path lights should not be a problem for any good quality paint.

Hi,I''ve looking at running low voltage lighting throughout my back yard, and I think I''ll need more than the 100 ft cable that''s the longest available at home depot. How long can the cables be? Can I daisy chain them? Will I need a stronger transformer? Thanks in advance for your help! Dan
Before you start running cables in your yard you should review our DESIGNING LOW VOLTAGE LIGHTING information page. Cable length and cable size are critical when laying out your new outdoor lighting system. It is always best to have multiple runs of cable from the transformer to a grouping of lights to minimize the effects of voltage drop which is the main cause of dim lights. We have many COMMERCIAL GRADE OUTDOOR LIGHTING KITS to choose from that include everything you need to properly light your garden.
